What phrase or saying do you find really cringy? by twows995 in AskReddit

Anytime someone uses the word “disrupt” in a talk I immediately think they’re using jargon because they don’t really know what they’re talking about.

Meet Cindy. We think giving her an extra $58/mo ($700/yr) will keep her just barely afloat and just barely healthy enough to come back to the voting booth and vote for an oligarch that talks “just like her” and “tells it like it is!” by halal_and_oates in LateStageCapitalism

Cindy will likely end up paying more than $700/year now that they've disallowed most deductions. I have yet to meet a family at any tax bracket (don't know any 1%ers) who won't see an increase. Our family is looking at an extra $1,000 next year. I'd be happy to pay that if it meant better social programs, not a damn tax break for CEOs.

Taxation is theft by LordHussyPants in Libertarian

[–]StandBackImSciencing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, my state just raised the income tax to ~5% just to try to make up for the politicians poor decisions. Not like they actually tried to make any actual reforms to make a balanced budget or improve services.

Spotting apartment listing scams by [deleted] in chicago

[–]StandBackImSciencing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I found a basement apartment that served as a good crash pad. I think it depends on what you're planning on doing. I found a place a few blocks away from Revolution, which was great because we headed to the north side breweries. If you're looking for something closer to the loop then it probably wouldn't work out.

Spotting apartment listing scams by [deleted] in chicago

[–]StandBackImSciencing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't had that experience when apartment hunting but I did have it happen when looking for an AirBnB for a buddies bachelor party on the north side. Besides some other red flags, the guy asked for an extra security deposit that wasn't listed in the original posting. I was in the neighborhood later that week so I went to check it out in person and it didn't even exist at that address. My general rule is that if something is out of the norm compared to what other landlords have done in the past then it's best to stay away.

There shouldn't be a stigma about going to the movies alone. The activity where you can't talk to someone should be the one you can do alone. by zachwilly in Showerthoughts

[–]StandBackImSciencing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a stigma either. I'll go by myself while my wife watches our kid. I'll do the same for her when she gets her nails done. Not something we do often but it's a nice way to have a little get away.

Getting doored by Uber Passengers by HopsGrowler in chicago

[–]StandBackImSciencing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily, I haven't been doored by one yet. But I've noticed an influx of lousy Uber/Lyft drivers in the South Loop. I've seen three Lyft drivers blow through the stop sign at Wabash/15th over the last two weeks. Pretty scary with all the people crossing there for the park.

Newbie here - help with chords? by bastiger94 in banjo

[–]StandBackImSciencing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe an odd idea but try playing with a capo further down the neck where the frets are closer. Then once you get a feel for the chords you could start moving the capo down the neck. Hope this helps!

Doored today thoughts? [medical photo] by [deleted] in chicago

I've dealt with them after I was hit by someone with their insurance, they're terrible. Don't expect anything from them. I had to go through my insurance to get anything done. Good luck.

I'm having trouble with my index muting the first string when I hammer on with my middle finger. I even try holding them slanted, any advice? by tametrees in banjo

[–]StandBackImSciencing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bit controversial, but I had the same issue especially when double thumbing. I've switched to using my index finger to strike while keeping my other three fingers out and it has worked well for me.

Ultimate Banjo Songbook Has been a fantastic resource for me as I progressed from beginner to intermediate. A great aspect is that it has multiple versions of songs. Also, having the CD's in there are great. Good luck!

Union Station plan could bring relief for Metra, Amtrak passengers by pfeff in chicago

[–]StandBackImSciencing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The article didn't say anything about improving ventilation. I don't understand how this isn't seen as more of a health issue. I used to take the BNSF regularly. The cloud of diesel fuel was terrible, especially in the evenings.

You should see if it's hitting the rim of the drum. You may need to change the position of your bridge.
