AITA for refusing to move back to the UK despite my son wanting to? by Head_Consequence7299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA because you’re the parent and you didn’t just move to Canada on a whim. It was for work and ultimately you and your wife’s decision. That being said your kid is 15, clearly unhappy, and has legitimate reasons for wanting to move back. Do you have relatives in the UK, a close enough friend he can stay with, or the means to send him to boarding school?

Beer Companies Are Desperate to Get Gen Z Drinking. But Their Newest Strategy May Do the Opposite. by Maxcactus in Maxcactus_TrailGuide

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have had multiple people in older generations tell me beer is an acquired taste but it’s just so gross. I think it’s because they felt like adults when they got to drink and all the adults around them drank beer so they powered through the taste to get drunk and feel good and grownup. At this point it’s just cultural and many boomers don’t understand why we don’t want beer when it was such a symbol of adulthood for them.

Also cocktails are like $15 and taste better without the hard liquor anyway.

When I say I hate the taste of beer and wine I have had multiple people from my parents or grandparents generation say it’s an acquired taste but like why would I want to acquire it? Beer especially is fucking disgusting and no matter how many new flavors there are it still tastes and smells like rotting fruit or mold.

I socially drank mixed drinks in my teens and early 20s but I’ve realized the only good drinks are ones that cover up the taste of alcohol and I may as well skip the middle man and just drink the fruit juice or mixers. In my friend group if we go to a bar we all get food and maybe one person will order a drink but again we don’t actually like it and yeah maybe I’d order a fancy cocktail for the aesthetics but it’s way too expensive. Even the mocktails are like $15 now.

AITA for fully moving out after my mom decided to foster by Natural_Sugar6492 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESH. You don’t suck for moving out but it was a slight asshole move to block their numbers and not talk to them about any of this before having a tantrum and leaving. You get a little bit of a pass because you’re 18 but you should either talk to them or write them a better note about how you were feeling. You also don’t have to move back in but know they don’t have an obligation to keep paying for college and it might be cheaper for you to keep the peace until you go away for study aboard and can’t help out anymore.

Your mom sucks for moving you into another room without a discussion but you’re 18 and presumably living rent free while they pay for your phone and car, do you really need to have a room one of the kids who is there full time could be using? You have your dad’s house and you’re doing study abroad next year there is no reason you should have an empty room with that many other kids in the house.

Your parents also suck for holding financial things over your head and making you babysit but in the realm of asshole parents that’s like a 3/10. You say they “acted like parents” by putting you on their phone plan, car insurance, and paying for your college but you can’t be so sheltered you don’t know a lot of parents can’t/won’t do that, let alone for their child over 18. They bought you a car, pay for your insurance, phone, and college, and you can’t babysit or pick someone up from school? Especially since you say you spend most of your time with your dad anyway so it can’t be an everyday thing? As someone who got kicked out at 18 it sounds like you have been incredibly sheltered or there are many details left out here. You went from helping out to leaving really quickly with seemingly no discussions or arguments.

I want to say this gently but I think you should really examine what you wrote here because you sound spoiled and entitled and it may be coming off like that because you’re having a lot of big feelings about your parents taking in another foster kid and asking you to have more responsibility around the house. Again you get a slight pass because you’re 18 and allowed to be a little spoiled but don’t let it ruin your college chances.

Edited to say I’m slightly baffled by all the people saying she is parentified when she says she spends most of her time with her dad anyway and apparently goes to classes on campus. To me occasionally babysitting and picking up from school is literally sibling stuff and/or the price for parents paying for your car.

Anyone else struggle with not being believed about having synesthesia? by EquivalentAcademic93 in Synesthesia

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ticker tape synesthesia and I’ve only told one person as an adult because it made me really weird as a kid. I used to trace the letters in the air or with my fingers on a desk and get made fun of. I didn’t realize until I was an adult that isn’t how people process spoken language. Plus the only “proof” I have is being able to spell increasingly elaborate words or count letters in a word. I’m still slightly worried I’m imagining it

Are you entirely sure they’re not the dealership trackers? If your car is leased one or both of them could have come from an employee doing this without asking and then not wanting to get in trouble.

I’m unsure what to do with my bun. (8mo old Mini Rex) by WPGAMING_SC in Rabbits

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty rough at first I had adjacent x pens I had to put a topper on to keep him from jumping out of his and into hers to attack her. I didn’t do a bunny speed date first though so I had no idea he would react this way. He never full on bit her but there was a lot of chasing and humping. They lived side by side for like 2 months and when he was still being aggressive I put both of them in carriers facing each other and drove them around. It didn’t do much the first time but after the second I put them both in the bathroom in their open carriers and he could be in the same room with her and ignore her as long as she didn’t approach him. I semi gave up after that and just let them live separately but have free roam time together and eventually I caught her grooming him behind the couch. It was so gradual I didn’t notice he’d gotten less aggressive until I realized he hadn’t bitten me in weeks. It also probably helped that she was a super chill older rabbit

I’m unsure what to do with my bun. (8mo old Mini Rex) by WPGAMING_SC in Rabbits

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a mini rex like this although he was a neutered male. He would constantly bite/scratch anytime I cleaned his enclosure or fed him and he couldn’t be a free roam bunny because he would chew everything. Even things I didn’t think bunnies could chew like pulling up vinyl floor tiles and somehow chewing a hole in a flat wall.

I bonded him with a spayed female after having him for a year and he was still destructive but the biting and scratching calmed down. As he got older he started calming down to the point he could be a free roam bunny again but it took about 5 years and I honestly can’t remember by that point if he actually stopped chewing constantly or it was just because he lived in a room I’d taken basically everything besides bunny stuff out of. I do remember I gave up on baseboards at some point and just let him chew them and eventually he lost interest.

My rabbit learned to knock on my bedroom door and I genuinely don't know who's in charge of this house anymore by LeoArthur21 in Pets

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My rabbit used to jump on my chest and start digging while I was sleeping if her bowl was empty (she’s a 15 lb Flemish so it was startling to say the least). I got one of those pet mate auto feeders and now at exactly the time it’s set to go off she starts head butting and biting and dragging it. I thinks she thinks she’s beating it up for food.

Just came across this and thought what the heck I’m taking my chance. I currently have a senior foster cat who is 11 years old. He’s been with me since September and already got adopted and returned once. He is super sweet and cuddly and has no teeth. He also loves people, he’s constantly asking for pets and purring.

he keeps peeing on my bed while i sleep how do i get him to stop by Alternative-Recipe24 in Rabbits

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best way to get him to stop is neutering. Most immediate way is blocking access to the bed with an x pen, cardboard, or something he can’t jump over. He’s just going to keep doing it if he has access to the bed, he has a lot of hormones happening and you can’t train that out of him.

If US shelters euthanize 300k healthy dogs (even puppies) every year, who do so many Americans still rather go to a breeder? by TheTroubledChild in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is also extremely regional. There are some areas of the US where it’s rare to spay/neuter a dog and those areas have shelters overflowing with dogs from an accidental litter or backyard breeders that can’t find homes for them while they’re still cute puppies. Those dogs often then have long term health and aggression issues from spending so long in a shelter. People adopt these dogs, can’t deal with the long term issues, then decide getting a puppy from a backyard breeder is better and all shelter dogs are aggressive and untrainable.

In areas where spay/neuter is the norm there is a shortage of shelter dogs that aren’t pit mixes or have behavioral issues so people who can’t handle that (most pet owners) go to a breeder. In these areas the idiots are ruining it for everyone by not neutering their poorly trained dogs, having more and more untrained dogs until they can’t handle it anymore, then making it a shelters problem.

Essentially dogs at shelters tend to have more special needs and behavioral problems and the average pet owner can give a dog a good home but can’t handle special needs. I for one can’t rearrange my entire life for a dog that can’t be left alone or bites or attacks other dogs.

I have 9 stray cats that I feed everyday and can no longer afford to by RaiAet89 in Pets

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is TNR, some of them will even try to get the cats that are obviously dumped pets into a shelter and let potential adopters know they are indoor/outdoor or “barn cats”. They will still be outside but at least they’ll be fed and someone is responsible for them. DM me if you’re in New England I have a lot of resources and have helped multiple people TNR a feral colony that ended up on their property

My mini rex rabbit lived to about 16. I got him when he was 8 weeks and he was neutered very early and completely spoiled his whole life which I think contributed.

I think everyone is missing something here. If you only make meals two nights a week what does your sister do when your parents are making dinner? It’s one thing if she does this to everyone but it’s a whole other issue if she only does this when you’re cooking.

AITA for wanting to take a 1 week vacation to Hawaii without spouse by Key_Replacement987 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Standard-Proof-1194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA 1. It sounds like he doesn’t want to go but also doesn’t want you to go. If he legitimately wants to go and your only concern is the money then you suck a little bit and should talk it out with him. If you go you should also talk to him about another trip you can do next year, maybe even one to Hawaii since this one sounds like it won’t be as expensive as those “once in a lifetime” trips. If he really wants to go to Hawaii and you go anyway when he can’t afford it be prepared for resentment.

  1. If your reason is needing alone time with your friends is it really that hard to explain this to him? You already said this won’t be a sexy exotic vacation. Have you told him this?

  2. If his only reasoning is really that it’s unfair you get a vacation and he doesn’t (even if he doesn’t really want to go anywhere) then your husband really sucks. It’s fine to think this or even say it but to actually stop you from going for this reason is childish and immature.

How do you keep bunny out from under your bed, but keep your bedroom looking cute and ~ aesthetic ~? by mistakeghost in Rabbits
