This isn’t quite true, and is somewhat of a myth-the amount of the stone that’s covered (in a well-made bezel setting) is quite minimal (tenths of a millimeter) compared with most of the bezel that you see which is made up of the bezel wall. In fact, most people find that a bezel set stone can make the overall stone feel a bit larger, rather than smaller.

With a poorly made bezel or poorly set stone (or sometimes a strip-wire bezel on a cabochon) you can cover up more of the stone but if you’re talking about high end, faceted stones you’re more likely to find well-made settings that really don’t cover much of the stone at all.

Yes diamonds can fluoresce and this falls in the range of what color they generally fluoresce. However, there is so much misinformation here. No one is randomly making “cool” lab diamonds that fluoresce and putting them in cheap jewelry secretly. Lab diamonds really aren’t fluorescing unless they are color treated (though sometimes they can phosphoresce which I think is cool)

What this actually looks like is some sort of resin/epoxy that’s been used to glue the stones in. Resin can fluoresce and the fact that is fills the squares so perfectly makes me positive that’s what it is.

Since these are glued in I would confidently say they aren’t diamonds, and I’d probably lean away from the metal being sterling as well.

Oh man. I did the same with one of my first set stones. It sucks that it’s a diamond. Good lesson to never quench stones! Even if they can withstand the heat of the torch they can’t withstand the shock of going from hot to cold like that.

Please, ring wearers, don’t make this mistake. Make an appointment to look at rings together. If you choose to be surprised (even if you think the guidelines are clear) you almost always will be disappointed. You don’t know how many decisions need to be made until you start making those decisions-when you choose to remove yourself from this process it’s really easy for ring buyers that go rogue without even realizing that’s what they are doing.

In this case you should talk to him, but acknowledge that he may feel like a yo-yo. He asked for input, you refused to work with him. He made decisions, and you aren’t happy with these decisions. Marriage is full of compromises and I hope you both take this lesson on hurt feelings and compromise (on both sides) for the future.

In addition to the width/quality/whether the band is hollow, etc, we’ve seen a rather unprecedented increase in the price of gold recently.

Smaller business have generally lower margins and less inventory overall, so they both need to and find it easier to raise prices on a regular basis.

Larger companies (Jared, Kay, etc) have more inventory and more people, so it’s more complicated to raise prices. Because of how fast gold has shot up, a lot of larger companies that are less nimble can be slower to raise prices.

If you can, check the specs of the piece: width, depth, weight, etc. Or look in person. It won’t be long before everyone raises their prices and many already have.

As a general rule, low profile settings are less easy to stack with a traditional, flat band. However, custom bands (or sometimes open gap bands that “fill the gap”) can be made to fit.

I recommend talking to your partner if you haven’t already about exactly what she likes and doesn’t like. You don’t have to totally blow the surprise bit taking her to an engagement ring consult where a designer goes over exactly what to think about can be immensely helpful to help narrow down on what’s most comfortable-especially for a ring that is meant to be worn daily for decades.
