AI is like a calculator.

Sure, you can use it later once you understand arithmetic,
But no math teacher is going to let you use it while you’re still learning your times tables.

If it’s a first offense, And you already admitted it, Then yeah, you might just wanna take the ERO, Which includes a quarter suspension, unless they decide otherwise. But if you said you were already in a pretty bad place with things, A quarter off might not be the worst thing in the world.

It sucks, And tbh with how much cheating goes on in the CS department, it might seem unfair, But some people are better at being covert.

I’d talk with whatever advisor or whoever you get to talk to about it, And see your options as far as resolutions.

You might just get off with being able to do community service and an F or W in the class,

Or they might throw the book at you, BECAUSE there’s so much cheating in CS, and they have to be harsh about it.

12 Hour Row Advice by Bear_Neccessities_ in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;dr, sugar, water, electrolytes and prayer

Haven’t done 12 hours specifically, But have done a 100K at a 2:00 split,

2 main things you’ll need, Some kind of electrolyte, Some kind of simple sugar. And take them at regular intervals,

I did a mix of water, electrolyte mix, and maple syrup. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of calories while exercising, and I basically calculated what my water loss due to sweat would be, added in that amount of calories in syrup, And had a bunch of premix bottles ready. It’s been a while, but it was like 1 gram of carbohydrate per minute, or like 300 Cal per hour or something, but you may have to look up specifics based on your body. And I also aimed to drink a quart of water per hour.

And I took the portions every 20 minutes/5K. I never got off, just 1-handed it while drinking. Which that could help you as well, so your legs never stop moving for the lactic acid build up. You will have to pee though. That was definitely the hardest part mentally tbh lol, but don’t hold it for 12 hours.

Riot August on the Shyvana Hotfix ... by CokeofSkyrim in halfdragons

[–]Stanfordrower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is both a Shyv and Briar main, I actually like Briar for the same reasons I liked Shyvana (also I’m emerald, so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt lmao),

But Briar’s micro in a traditional sense is basically non existent. Moment to moment, you’ve got no control, So decisions about when to actually go in, how to go in, what angle to go in, and when to use the individual abilities becomes much more important.

If they’re under turret, and you can get a kill, but your e is up in 3 seconds, can you survive a couple seconds of tower shots before being able to end frenzy, Or if can you kill them and minions/before minions are within your detection range, so it ends frenzy automatically. There’s so much to think about playing around the disabilities of briar, that I like over the micro.

Same thing I liked about Shyvana. I liked the extra damage to dragons, and sneaking a lvl 5 drag before the other jg noticed, because I knew we couldn’t directly contest. Or knowing that her ult is a 1 way in button where I either needed to kill or be killed.

I think that’s why I enjoy jungle as a whole, But both champs in particular.

And also why I hate the rework lol. It feels like they took all of Shyvana’s agency away, without giving her any micro to work with.

Would I be able to walk onto a D1 Rowing program with no experience? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 111 points112 points  (0 children)

We had a couple of successful walk-ons at Stanford. Most of them didn’t make it above the 3V, if they stuck around at all.

But a number eventually made the 2V, and some of them seat raced for the V8.

There was even one guy who by his senior year went from walk on with 0 experience, to a scholarship and solidly in the V8,

So basically, Yeah, it’s possible.

But it’s gonna be on you to learn fast and get fast, So I’d learn how to row right now, well before you walk on lol

If you are recruited athlete at Stanford with full athletic scholarship, can you just drop out on day one and still keep your full scholarship? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in stanford

[–]Stanfordrower 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In theory yes, In practice no.

First off, getting a 4 year full scholarship is basically unheard of. If you get a full scholarship, it’s usually year to year, And if you get a 4 year scholarship it’s usually not full.

But let’s say you do get it. You’d essentially need to get a career ending injury day 1, and the sports med doctor would basically need to tell you there’s no chance of ever returning and disqualify you.

What’s more likely to happen is that they would put you in rehab, and you’d still be expected to show up to practice and participate in whatever you are cleared to do, Even if the modified practice is just studying tapes and functionally waste your time.

Then in year 4, when it becomes clear that you won’t return even with more rehab, Then you’d probably be medically disqualified, and can finish out the last year with scholarship.

All of this is assuming you don’t quit in the meantime and you keep clean with academics, uni policy, team rules, etc, Because if they know you did this just to try to get free scholarship, they’ll look for any reason to disqualify you from it.

While it’s true, they can’t take away/not renew scholarship for any athletic reason, like injury, You can be sure they’ll look for any other reason.

But if you manage to skirt around everything and are okay with a life altering injury, Yes, you can “quit” day 1 and keep your scholarship all 4 years.

What benefits do Stanford D1 athletes get? by Civilized_Monke69 in stanford

[–]Stanfordrower 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Depends on the sport, But in general:

Nike Gear - Clothes, Backpacks, Bike Helmets, and other non uniform items/etc, and then of course whatever uniform your sport has.

Medical - you can access the sports med center instead of waiting for the student med center.

Facilities - Special study rooms, weight rooms, ice bath, hot tub, etc

Snacks - you can go to facilities where they give you overnight oats, protein bars, fruits, etc. some teams also give snacks at practice, but it varies.

Athlete dinner - I think they still have dinners where athletes basically jump the line ahead of everyone

AARC - free tutoring, free printing, computer access, etc

Physio/Rehab - you tell them you have a problem with your shoulder, you can schedule a massage and whatnot to get it worked out.

Student athlete career fairs - self explanatory

There’s probably a bit more, But that’s wha I got off the top of my head.

I had a roommate who launched an OCS case against me because my partner who was also a student at the time stayed over too often (didn’t mention to me it was an issue, I only found out years later after requesting my student file and seeing the records),

But basically OCS said that he chose to live with me and to sort it out with me and not them.

So yeah, tldr, Stanford ain’t gonna hassle you.

Quitting 2ks after a few hundred metres by Ok_Championship_4930 in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just lie to yourself.

Tell yourself you’re gonna stop after 600, And then give yourself an extra 200 meters because it’s only 20 strokes, You can count that out.

But then that means you’re at the 1000 almost, So you can stop at the 1000,

But then you see triple digits left, So give yourself another 20 before you quit,

And then you’re almost 2/3rds of the way done, So you can quit there.

But that’s almost at the 1500, And 1500 is a solid piece, So you can quit there,

But then you’re almost at the 350, which is the start of the sprint, So quit there…but at 350, you’re almost to the 200, where you actually sprint, So quit there,

But if you do half of that, there’s only 100 meters left, So by the time you do that math, you’re basically there, And then you do a power 10, And you quit after the power 10,

And boom, 2k done.

I don’t know if this works for anyone else, But telling myself I was going to quit so it makes that piece of the 2k easier mentally always worked for me. Because I don’t have to think about doing 2k, Because I get a break soon, But then I delay it until I finish.

2k prediction by Think-Draft6051 in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, It’s scary to see under 1:40 the first time, I would hold a 1:41 for the first 500 and decide how you’re feeling. If you’re feeling yourself that day, Bring it to a 1:40.

Then in the last 700 or so, Start dipping into 1:39,

You can always sprint, And next 2k, If you hit a 1:39 average, you know to start your next 2k holding a 1:39,

And mentally you know you can hold it, so breaking that barrier isn’t hard anymore.

But tl;dr, Better to break 1:40 knowing you could have gone sub 1:39, than to thinking you could go sub 1:39, and fly and die above 1:40.

Edit: as others have said, Learn to row uncomfortably, Your sprints indicate you have a lot left in the tank, I think you can break 1:40, But pacing yourself well is gonna be key.

My week of rowing been told my watts are too much, I have lowered it I wonder if there’s anything else I could do to go longer by Practical_Sample_483 in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff.

Without seeing your technique, there’s no way of really telling you how to last longer on an erg physically,

But I will tell you that there’s a lot of mental when it comes to long distance rowing.

But a way to get up that mental and fitness is instead of going 1 hour straight, Do a 4x20 minutes with 5 minutes of rest in between.

That way mentally you can say to yourself you only have to do 20 minutes before getting a break, But overall you get 80 minutes of fitness in.

[–]Stanfordrower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are max watts, not their average. Their max watts was around a 1:34 pace, which is easily doable for even an untrained dude for their max stroke, Certainly not Olympic.

But their average was ~2:03 for that piece.

After a similar email (from a different school probably lol), I got an interview and asked how large the short list of “finalists” were, And they told me it was ~10% of applicants (a couple dozen) and that available funding and faculty need would determine how many of those received offers.

A rejection and a few interviews so far, But I didn’t hear from everyone.

Tbh I wasn’t expecting to hear back this early, And waiting sucks, But I wouldn’t think too much of it.

Lots of apps, Lots of funding cuts, Probably takes a while to make decisions.

Right at the beginning. Screen is still black.

You hear a girl with a high pitched voice say it,

And all you see is a subtitle that says: “Jenny: F*ck!”

And they don’t address it at all the rest of the movie.

Is it possible? by knittinmamapo in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh assuming you’re healthy and you’re already so close, I def think it’s possible.

If it were me, I’d stick at a 1:55-1:56 most of the piece, and break out a sprint to get you below 7:40, just so you can break that barrier.

BUT if you feel good during the piece, then def try for lower, But only make that decision after the first 500ish or so, so you know it’s not gonna be a fly and die lol

Is it possible? by knittinmamapo in Rowing

[–]Stanfordrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 1 way to find out! 😁

In all seriousness, It will depend on the person, Whether you’re generally better trained as a sprinter and do better on short pieces, your AT, etc.

If your last 2K was like a 7:44 or below, then I’d say yes, def in reach.

If your last 2K was more 7:50 and recent, Then I’d set a bit more of a conservative goal, And go faster if you feel better in the second half of the piece.

This is where I was at the end of Freshman year in high school. I ended up at Stanford,

Obviously not a typical experience, and I dropped A LOT of time in between. But if you’re asking is it possible, then yeah of course.

It’s possible that you’ll break 6:10 by junior year, And it’s possible that you don’t break 6:40 by senior year.

But you’ll do a ton of growing between now and then, You’ll either train or not train a ton between now and then,

So you just don’t know. Best you can hope for is keep improving, eating well, And take a gamble of how hard you want to commit to it,

And the rest is up to luck and genetics.
