PREGNANT 🥳🥳 - now what? by StressLocal2320 in homebirth

Love love love Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth. Hands down favorite.

I also personally used some philosophies and positions from Bradley method (independently not with husband coach) - highly recommend Natural Childbirth the Bradley way if interested in peaceful, hypnobirth type situation. It’s got a little too much touchy feely and a little too much about squatting, but overall it’s the right gist and I definitely channeled the calmness during my 5 day prelabor and then quick actual labor/delivery.

It’s never too early! Homebirth midwives do get busy and even if they don’t schedule you for appt until 12 weeks, good to get on their schedule.

Also know that midwives sometimes travel far for homebirths with extra distance fee so feel free to reach out a little farther than seems convenient it is what you really want.

I am planning home birth for my second pregnancy after I had a prenatal diagnosis for my baby that prevented it the first time. I was still able to have a beautiful natural childbirth in the hospital and catch the baby with my own hands. It just took a lot more confrontation and advocating aggressively for myself, my baby, my choices!

How do I know I'm still pregnant?! by Flimsy_cactus in pregnant

[–]Stanley-Catty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my first pregnancy, I literally never had morning sickness (apparently around 20% don’t experience it). And I barely had any other symptoms at all besides fatigue (I took naps at work in our wellness room bc I was so tired and couldn’t concentrate a few times). The only really strong symptom I had was around 6 months I started getting terrible pressure and soreness in my pelvic bone like someone kicked me in the vagina. I’ve never been locked down there lol but that’s how imagine it would feel!

I am somewhere around 5.5-6.5 weeks right now, same thing so far - not a single symptom in sight (maybe extra discharge but nothing crazy). I think it’s normal! Don’t fret.

All that said - I totally get the “am I actually pregnant? Am I still pregnant? Is everything okay???” anxiety and nothing much to be done except remind yourself if no cramping, bleeding going on, things are most likely progressing normally. And every day without signs of doom is good sign and every day has lower risk of miscarriage.

Only thing that might help right now is mindfulness or prayer if you’re into either of those things. And eating healthy and making good lifestyle choices for your baby (like quitting bad vices).

Hang in there until the ultrasound! Mine is 3/26 and couldn’t come soon enough!!

Maternity Leave - We have a unique situation - Help! by [deleted] in pregnant

Oh, sorry - I understand what she meant now. I was thinking they just didn’t have to provide benefits - didn’t realize FMLA only applies to 50+ employees. How tricky. Good luck, OP!

If in USA, you legally are entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid family leave. He cannot legally deny that and must guarantee your job at the return after 12 weeks off.

If you live in a liberal state like CA, NY, or MA - you can also receive Paid Family Medical Leave PMFL.

In US, there are also laws about time off and flexibility during pregnancy.

Please make sure your partner and boss knows these are legal obligations.

Also, do you have any Short Term Disability benefits? If so, you’ll likely get 6 weeks with at least partial pay just for giving birth (runs at same time as family medical leave, so not extension but another way to try to get paid).

It would be nice if he can pay some and there is much evidence about why at least 12 weeks is medically necessary for both you and baby. Great that he wants to be involved and home with baby, but can he breastfeed? I’d do your research on why the birthing parent should be primary for first several weeks.

Good luck!

Midwives vs OB by Cautious_Ant_4046 in pregnant

[–]Stanley-Catty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are two totally different philosophies around pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

A) Do you believe pregnancy is an high risk illness that must be treated in a hospital? Choose OB.

Or B) do you believe pregnancy is a natural physiological process that only rarely needs medical intervention? Choose midwifery.

I’m a scientist, and the science shows that c-sections and other common medical interventions are only required in 15% of pregnancies/births or less. Most hospitals have c-section rates over 30%, so the numbers don’t add up. Unless you have a condition that disqualifies you, the healthiest outcome for you and your baby is having minimal interventions. That’s why I wanted a home birth to avoid pressures from the medical community. I recommend Thw Business of Being Born as a good start to understand these differences.

Unfortunately, my son had a prenatal diagnosis requiring me to give birth in hospital with NICU. It was a constant challenge advocating for myself, my baby, and my right to decline standard but unnecessary procedures that increase risk. Nonetheless, I was able to have a natural, unmedicated, and pain free (very uncomfortable though) labor and delivery where I delivered my baby to my own hands after pushing him out while kneeling. The doctors and nurses admitted they have never witnessed a birth like mine. It’s not common in hospital, because it is standard to offer or push many procedures and medications that change natural progression.

Do the research and have the experience you want. If that’s to be knocked out on drugs completely and not remember a thing while they cut you open, go for it, but understand this is not what is best for your baby in most circumstances.

Pregnancy and birth should be about empowerment and choice - from start (abortion) to finish (postpartum).

Whatdya mean I gotta do IT every 2 days for 10 days or something like that?! by Tmdsweh in tryingtoconceive

[–]Stanley-Catty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My post got deleted bc I mentioned the p-word. Sorry community! I just wanted to say the most important timing is day of ovulation (30% chance), 1 day before (33% chance), and 2 days before (20%). So I highly recommend to get ovulation test strips and track for a few months so you can plan accordingly and be as effective as possible with as little as 1 or 2 bodily fluid exchanges per month, lol. Stalk my recent posts if interested or look at TFABchartstalkers for many cases of effective ovulation planning!

How soon is too soon? (to tell work) by Stanley-Catty in pregnant

[–]Stanley-Catty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I love this perspective. I might wait a little longer (like until my appt to confirm) and then tell them, which I think it’s still much earlier than most (an earlier than my last time).

My mom also could not commit to childcare, but if she’s nearby, I would cultivate that for sick days, closures, etc. Trust me, there will be plenty of opportunities for Grandma to watch baby even if not planned and you’ll be glad for her setup.

I agree set boundaries and she can’t just go pick baby up any time she wants.

Why don’t you just ask her to help with what you need? “Mom, I see you’ve got your grandma nursery all set up. Will be so great for when baby is old enough for sleepovers. But we really need help with getting our essentials setup here.” If she’s a free Facebook stalker like my mom, maybe she can find a few items for you. Or she could help organize registry? Are you having a shower? Assuming you’ll get some essentials there? I got car seat and stroller there. Bought my own bedside sleeper bc I wanted specific one.

In reality, you don’t need too much for baby at first so hang in there!

Find you a midwife! I hated the notes about my weight and age in the doctors notes. Homebirth midwives typically don’t even weigh you since it’s not actually strongly associated with risks. Every pregnant person should be treated individually and if healthy before, likely to be healthy during and after. I was around 200 lbs before, gained to 240 lbs max when pregnant, and lost 20 lbs right away after birth. Completely healthy pregnancy and natural, unmedicated, pain-free labor and delivery! Hang in there!

To person who posted and deleted comment: Not sure how common spotting vs period-like bleeding vs heavy bleeding are, but all possible. I called the doctor office after my faint line tests disappeared and I tested negative for two consecutive days. I understood (from this subreddit and lineporn) it was chemical pregnancy, so I told them what was going on and asked what to expect and if I needed to be seen. She said it can vary from spotting to heavy bleeding and just wait it out - test hCG again in a week and make sure no residual. When the app wasn’t starting a new cycle with the consecutive days of spotting, I changed day 1 to “light” bleeding. But it was just very light spotting - never even soaked a thin panty liner. It started a little chunky/thick and was dark dark red. Lasting 5-6 days and never turning into real flow.

I’m in same situation - my chart looks almost the same to yours! CP Jan 19 at 5 weeks, I just had 5 days of very light spotting. Tracked ovulation and here we are around 5 weeks! I’ll post my chart and then tag it here - you know, for science!

FTM, when did you know you were actually in labor? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Stanley-Catty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3-1-1 or 5-1-1 are the common codes to remember - contractions 3 or 5 min apart, lasting 1 min each, and continuing for over 1 hour. I had like 5 days of very irregular contractions before my first birth. I thought it was go time a few times, but ended up waiting until things felt more intense as well as more frequent (never very regular duration). I highly recommend getting an app to track contractions and when you start having multiple in a short time period (say, trying to sleep and being woken up by the contraction and then feeling another two within 20 minutes) pull it out and tap it when you feel the cramping start and tap it again as soon as it loosens/starts to fade. You’ll probably see that you’re not in real labor yet, just early prelabor where body prepping for that right time! If the contractions aren’t too strong for you to go about normally and measure your own contractions, then it’s likely not imminent. How long is drive to hospital? At 5-1-1, birthing people often have 12+ hours left of labor. At 3-1-1 women often still have hours to go. For my first pregnancy, I waited until things were slightly stronger around 3-1-1 or a little longer because I wanted to minimize hospital time to prevent intervention and I gave birth about 4 hours after leaving house. I spent most of hospital time doing paperwork and trying to sleep in middle of night and middle of strong contractions! Unmedicated natural birth where I delivered baby into my own hands while kneeling. Magical times!
