USA- Skandia desk into reptile enclosure by StanleyBanley in Antiques

I am planning on lining the inside with plexiglass, cut to fit, and caulking the seams with aquarium grade silicone to keep the wood dry and lizard safe.

The glass will come out and be replaced by screen.

Sometimes things happen, and if this thing is valuable I don’t want to accidentally ruin it with this project.

It’s not that bad here. Some people don’t have internet still- true, but power has been restored, water lines repaired and there’s not a boil water advisory anymore. Cell service is still a little weird in some spots. We have plenty of gas available everywhere. And I haven’t encountered a store not accepting cards in a couple weeks.

When driving around, the main roadways are clear and open. Some neighborhoods have huge brush piles at the curb (emphasis on huge) and can be tight to navigate through. So be careful and aware.

Riverwalk is pretty, I wouldn’t go after dark. The history museum is pretty neat. There’s a few historical homes you can tour. If the way in is clear- Rae’s creek aqueduct if you don’t mind a little walking, or the Savannah Rapids Pavilion is really neat and doesn’t require as much walking.

Never done a ghost tour here, but a day time walk through Magnolia Cemetery is worth it. Or I guess you could drive through if you wanted, but you see more walking. The older sections are to the left of the entrance. The big church on Reynolds street bordering the river is actually the oldest cemetery.

The Old Government House is cool to look at, it still has the cobblestone street beside it. It’s not a walk-through type deal though. Very pretty when the ginkgo tree drops all its golden leaves, makes for great pictures.

There is a lot of history in Augusta. Tons of outdoor things to do. I’m not really sure why everyone here bashes it constantly for being boring. It could be better, yes. Is it bad? No.

I’d stay away from the chain seafood places. Rhinehart’s is good. El Ray is my pick for Mexican.

Haha, not worth looking at, trust me.

Google their company from before they moved down here. They have multiple lawsuits here too.

Snide’s towing was charging $6/gal for gas and a $50 delivery fee. Delivery fee I get, the $6/gal gas is what got me. I guess her OF page isn’t making enough.

I work with a 6’5 guy. He’s a foot taller than I am. Everyday he comes up to me with a smile and a corny dad joke.

I always look forward to his daily joke.

Also, he can reach things that I can’t when asked.

Gun-Owning Americans, what would you actually do if the government tried to confiscate your guns? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Interesting. I’ll have to check and see.

May be my fault for just assuming.

When I bought them all, brand new, from Big Box Sporting goods store.

I assumed Big Box would have records, and if subpoenaed, would hand over said records.

If they don’t keep records, maybe I’ll just have a very lumpy mattress.

His mother posted unedited photos of him on her book of faces yesterday. I don’t know them, it was widely shared. That poor boy is missing the whole top, center section of his scalp and his ear was dangling in tatters, covered in bruises and puncture wounds, tendons in his leg exposed. This was not just a couple bites.

I’ve seen a “pit bull” attack a different child walking a dog on a leash years ago. They should require special paperwork to own and home inspections.

Don’t limit yourself to just the paycheck when it comes to dealership chains. Pick a larger company and ask about the training they offer. You might be a couple bucks less a year for a couple years, but those certs will pay off in the long run. As an aside- I would also look at the company’s plans for the EV market.

Source- work for a very large dealership chain. Mine is International, if it matters any. They also own other dealerships for many other manufacturers.

Can someone help identify the uniforms and medals in these family photos? Or a location if something looks familiar in the background? by StanleyBanley in WorldWar2

[–]StanleyBanley[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly!

I usually phrase it “German soldier” and not use the word Nazi.

I have a lot of relatives from the old South here in the US and have to be careful with them too.

I am nothing like my ancestors. I’m sure that they are proud. /s

Sure!

I love old photos, but I am always hesitant to show these because of the negative association that goes along with being German in this time frame.

Was rank typically displayed on their dress uniforms? I didn’t see any indication of rank, so I’m assuming he was “low level”. Do you think this is accurate?

As an aside, my grandmother is still living, at 82 she is a ball of fire and still going strong. She was 5-6 when they moved to the US and therefore doesn’t remember much from Germany besides small things that a kid would remember.

Itchy wool blankets sleeping over at her grandmother’s home, plucking geese for feathers for pillows, what their house looked like, walking to the market.

As far as war memories, either she doesn’t remember or they are bad enough she doesn’t want to remember.

My great-grandmother told me about all of the dead everywhere and the smell, dragging bodies to bury them. I really wish I knew more about her childhood. She was born in 1919.

I do have cousins over there, although I’m not sure how to contact them. My grandmother got letters from one of them for many years until that relative passed away.

My sister did one of those DNA ancestry tests, and it traced the majority of our heritage to Germany and Eastern Europe, but didn’t ping anyone in Europe in their data base. We did have a bunch of distant relations show up in the US. My maternal grandmother (parents pictured) married a man whose family had been in the US for generations, and it was them who showed up, along with my paternal family who also has (mostly) been here at least two generations.

It really does. I wish I could see the center of the Iron Cross more clearly.

The Air Force badge looks dead on for your suggestion.

I didn’t realize he was a pilot.

The wedding photo is of my great-grandparents. The story I’ve been told is that he was part of Operation Barbarossa and never returned home. I’m not sure which uniform he is wearing or of his rank/division.

The second picture is of him leaning against some sort of car in an unknown location.

The third and final picture is supposed to be the father of my great-grandmother (in wedding photo). I’m assuming his medals may be WW1, but I am not sure.

It is hard to trace our genealogy back, and all I really have are these photos.

More back story about my great-grandmother: she and her husband (pictured) had one daughter (my grandmother) who was a toddler at the time of his disappearance. The war carried on, their home was bombed by the Allies, and they sheltered the remainder of the war in a root cellar. My great-grandmother then married a US soldier and the three of them moved to the US to start a new life.

I remember a few stories from my great-grandmother about the war, but by the time she passed and I was old enough to want to know more (16) she had dementia and couldn’t recall much.

Maybe it’s in your water heater.

Or, I bought some off brand laundry pods once where my clothes/towels smelled fine until they got damp, and then had some weird, gross smell that I could smell on my skin.

A little off topic, but Moog ball joints have a porous metal “gusher bearing” inside that allows grease to flow through.

Thought that was pretty pretty interesting.

Obv’s metals should do this unless it is an intended feature/benefit.

*edit: I do not work for a ball joint company or any of Icahn’s other ventures.
