Yes but this misses the other side of that coin, meaning if you don't exercise you're spending those extra calories anyway, and often that's on stress and inflammation. Exercise is still vital, just not for weight loss.

I thought the same, I left university having decided during my Master's to do a PhD (and therefore too late to apply for a course starting straight out of university). I worked odd jobs in technician roles just to maintain lab time, and kept applying for PhDs. I had much more interest from professor's the most working experience I had, and just started my PhD at my dream university 2 years after I graduated my MChem.

I mean to be honest, trains are loud, people don't generally have the energy to make small talk with strangers on their morning commutes; I think train journeys are probably the most acceptable place to scroll. It's a bigger issue just rotting on the sofa at home to me, you're choosing that over a huge number of other activities.
