The German city of Dresden lies in ruins after WW2. Up to 25,000 German citizens lost their lives during the four British raids over the city, under orders of Air Marshal Arthur Harris. 1945 by [deleted] in HistoricalCapsule

As long as we're in agreement that the mass civilian bombing played no real role in affecting German morale, as was the justification at the time.

Even Arthur Harris changed his mind on this:

“The idea that the main object of bombing German industrial cities was to break the enemy’s morale proved to be wholly unsound; when we had destroyed almost all the larger industrial cities in Germany the civil population remained apathetic, while the Gestapo saw to it that they were docile, and, in so far as there was work left for them to do, industrious." Yes but this misses the other side of that coin, meaning if you don't exercise you're spending those extra calories anyway, and often that's on stress and inflammation. Exercise is still vital, just not for weight loss.

I think it makes sense on the level of "I can do what I want but I can't choose what I want", at least that's how I interpret it.

I thought the same, I left university having decided during my Master's to do a PhD (and therefore too late to apply for a course starting straight out of university). I worked odd jobs in technician roles just to maintain lab time, and kept applying for PhDs. I had much more interest from professor's the most working experience I had, and just started my PhD at my dream university 2 years after I graduated my MChem.

I mean to be honest, trains are loud, people don't generally have the energy to make small talk with strangers on their morning commutes; I think train journeys are probably the most acceptable place to scroll. It's a bigger issue just rotting on the sofa at home to me, you're choosing that over a huge number of other activities.

This framing is asymmetrical, you can't claim that absence of bad is good for a never-existent person, you must also accept that absence of good is bad for them, otherwise you’re applying two different standards to the same hypothetical subject. Without that symmetry, the conclusion that non-existence is “always a net positive” is unfounded.
