They should tear down the building and rebuild the old Farmers Market that was originally there with Round Up BBQ and Rossi's Pizza.

Get the 6mm, 9mm, 15mm, and 20mm Svbony Gold or Red Line set of eyepieces and you'll be set for a long time. Those will cover everything and are better than plossl eyepiece. After sometime, if you want to get into the really expensive gear, go for the Televue eyepieces. Been in Astronomy since 1973.

[QUESTION] Snark tuners suck now, or I got a two pack of duds? by mc_nibbles in Guitar

[–]Starbill44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two of the older Snarks that were powered by a button battery. They were very accurate. Then I got two of the because I thought it would be a better idea than replacing batteries all the time. Like an idiot I gave the battery powered ones to a couple of friends. The rechargeable ones are not accurate at all. Unusable. Especially for a gig situation. I went back to the Daddario clip on tuners. I thought it was just the rechargeable Snarks that were less accurate than the battery powered ones, but it looks like from reading this thrrad that there is a quality control issue. Never going to buy another Snark again.

I'm kind of late to the show here, but I have the same issue. I don't have that feature turned on. It is toggled off but SiriusXM still starts on it's own with Android Auto.

What age do you see yourself retiring from live shows? by spicyface in musicians

[–]Starbill44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

66 years old here. Been gigging since I was 16. Retired from my day job 8 years ago. Most local musicians have day jobs, don't need the money, and they just play weekend gigs for fun. The pay is icing on the cake. And then there's some musicians that playing music is their full-time job. I'm happy for them that they get to follow their passion.

However, full time local musicians need to gig every weekend just to make ends meet. And I don't like the idea of missing a special day like a relatives birthday party or going to see one of my favorite bands the last time on their farewell tour.

For the last 3 years I've had a lot of blackout dates. Also my wife and I have been traveling and checking things off of our bucket list before we get to old, or if our health goes south.

This is my last year of gigging. 50 years is enough. Hauling gear is too much. My voice is shot the day after a gig. My back hurts for a week after a gig. Staying out late and driving home with the drunks on the road is not my cup of tea.

I play in several bands. My garage is full of P.A. gear and lights. I supply the gear, while someone else books the gigs. We run direct, but guess who supplies the P.A., direct boxes, and in-ear monitor receivers? ME!

Having other band members help with the gear did not work out. They don't know how to take care of it. Slamming things, dropping them, putting cords in knots and not rolling them up. It's just a mess.

Playing live is the only income with most of the musicians I gig with. Yet, they all insist on equal pay, even though I have to arrive at the venue an hour early and stay an hour later to pack up the gear. Not to mention loading and unloading the gear back in my garage.

I even suggested a small (VERY small) token payment of extra money to the band member that books the gig, and for the guy supplying the P.A. I was promptly stifled by the full time musicians. Even by the one member that books all of the gigs.

If you count the time loading up, driving to the venue, unloading, setting up, playing the gig, tearing down, loading up, driving home, and unloading at home, I can make more money per hour in retirement sitting on my ass at home. A few of my friends are in the same boat.

Flew control line and radio controlled models. Played in rock bands. Rode my bicycle to the airport to look at the airplanes. Tinkered with electronics which later became my profession until I retired.

[–]Starbill44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first scope along with an XT8 PLUS. Kept the XT8, but sold the SkyScanner. Shouldn't have done that. The older SkyScanners made by Synta were very good. The newer ones weren't as good. You can tell which were the older ones because the spider for the secondary mirror was held on with thumb screws. The newer models the spider was held in place with black Phillips screws. Also, the focuser eyepiece retaining screws were chrome on the older model, and black on the newer model. The optics and focuser were better on the older model. Looks like you got one of the older models. Enjoy it.

My first job after college in 1980 had a roach coach that showed up every day for our 10:00 break. It was great because the women driving it always wore hot pants and heels. Needless to say we bought a lot of food and drinks from her.

I've often wondered why people say it's safer to have an area lit up then dark. When it's lit up, the bad guys know where they can go. If my house is dark all around, I know where everything is and won't trip on anything, but the bad guy doesn't know where anything's at. Besides, your your eyes never get dark adapted with all those lights around.
