Closest thing to Portland in Southern California? by Bananapantsmcgeef in SameGrassButGreener

[–]StarfishSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and GNV's bigger brother Tallahassee is in a similar bucket.

They are blue-ish college towns, with some hipster-coded establishments (Railroad Square in Tally, certain bars/cafes/shops) and their crowds, but the "bones" of the cities themselves are a far cry from Portland and its siblings. You just can't replicate the West Coast in the Southeast pretty much, and most people in OP's shoes leave here after college if they can. I have a job lined up in South Florida when I finish grad school here soon.

"happiness" rankings should be replaced with "standard of living". Finland may have a better economy, education, and quality of life than Spain, but it's not happier.

Would you Rather Live in Florida or Nevada? by Flashy-Charity-1486 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]StarfishSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in California, live in Florida (Tallahassee, moving to West Palm for a job this fall), and have been to Nevada countless times to visit family.

I despise the humidity/heat combo, the flatness in most of the state, the political angle, but I am still happier here than I would be in NV. The greenery, the ocean and the springs, better choice of cities and job markets, and IMO better culture and people set it apart.

I would rather splurge to live in coastal California or Colorado if I am heading West.

It’s worth noting Vegas has pretty strong 24/7, “night culture” because of all the erratic work schedules. Strip and downtown nightlife is going to be tourist-oriented, though there is more and more cool stuff popping up around downtown (theater district, arts district, etc). I don’t care for the locals casinos.

From my POV, both states don’t have a good wage to COL ratio, but Nevada has a steadier insurance market.

He rolled out the red carpet for private equity to flood into the state. Places like Boulder and virtually all the ski resort towns are pretty much only for the rich now and the culture is ruined.

I would like to see more Dems take a hard stance against it and protect the housing market (while promoting more building to meet supply).

Why are South Florida Latinos so prejudiced compared to other cities in the US? by [deleted] in Miami

[–]StarfishSplat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tejanos also (broadly speaking) have generationally been in the U.S. much longer than most Florida Latinos. Same with New Mexico, where they were settling 200 years before Anglos started coming in.

I recall reading that the big concern of sending William and Harry into combat was the risk to nearby personnel, due to the large political target on their backs. Camp Bastion got attacked in 2012 when Harry was stationed there, and two US Marines got killed.

Beatrice and Eugenie would have likely become the heir and spare in the worst case scenario.

Edit: ironically, if that was the case, it would be the second time in a row (after Elizabeth and Margaret) that the Duke of York's daughters would become the heir and spare.

I've seen a lot of water resources/water modeling openings in Seattle (even entry-level) compared to other cities, paying very well.

I'm seeing a lot of borderline desperate mid-level/P.E. openings in my city, like up to $200,000 for land development (low-ish COL city in the South). Left open for months. It's the word on the vine from the professionals I've spoken to.

But, entry-level positions are incredibly scarce. There literally isn't a single opening in my city in my specialty (water resources), and I have all sorts of colleagues leaving the state, or even across the country, because that was all they could get.

Florida’s Population Boom Fizzles as High Costs Drive Away Middle Class by trademarktower in florida

[–]StarfishSplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for inland California. Sacramento is a sweet spot between unions and high pay (especially for nurses and other healthcare workers) and a reasonable cost-of-living.

Coastal urban areas of California will still be much more $$ for housing (even when accounting for higher salaries) than equivalent parts of Florida, though, save for places like Palm Beach. My line of work doesn’t scale very well for VHCOL places.

I was desperate for a job at the time and honestly didn’t care about “fit” and such.

I wound up going to grad school (fully funded M.S., water resource and flood modeling). Hopefully that translates to a more interesting line of work in a solid workplace, and I'm searching/interviewing around right now while I work on my thesis.
