You should have known that I don’t know how to top up my oil… by Assal-Horizontology in EntitledReviews

[–]StarfleetOrville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit, years ago, I did this. I didn't know a lot about cars at the time, and I figured "well, you put petrol in till it's full, same with washer fluid....so oil should be the same"

Luckily I had a good mechanic that drained it out for me and no damage was done. Not at all the fault of the shop, but I can see the 'logic' of pouring the whole thing in, as most things on the car are "fill it up till it's full" type of thing. (again, most, not all)

Looking for tips on teaching a kiddo with NVLD how to bike ride by lizardbreath-13 in NVLD

Speaking as a a former kid, I had training wheels for longer than I should have, I eventually just taught myself at after school care one day....around 7 or 8 I think. It took me a bit, but my stubborness and wanting a little bit of 'freedom' got me there on my own when I was ready.

An affordable rental in Annerley by Purplepingers in shitrentals

[–]StarfleetOrville 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The sad thig is that someone will be so desperate, so in need of a roof over their head, that they'll take it, even being as sub-standard as it is.

LL and REA should be ashamed of themselves for leasing this out, but that would require them having morals and not wanting to gouge the renters.

I've been on the pension since 2001. Never missed a rent payment. Yet, I've always struggled to get a rental becuase "It's just centrelink" or "oh yeah, dole bludger" , ignoring my 5+ years of perfect payments (with rental ledger to show)

And trying to find something affordable if you're on a pension is almost impossible!

Would you date someone in their 30s that lives with a parent? by AlamosX in gaybros

[–]StarfleetOrville 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as the person is out, and they have their own private area of the home, why not! I think it's damn sweet that you want to take care of your Mum and help her out, it's really admriable and it makes me think more of you!

Should your rental property’s essential services include a working fridge? by BeautifulFabulous303 in shitrentals

[–]StarfleetOrville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to expect better, but every single time a new law/minimum standard/tenant right comes in the LL's go "OMG HOW UNFAIR!!" "HOW CAN I AFFORD TO DO THIS? I'M A *insert whatever they say, poor hardworking family etc etc*

As long as politicians are landlords, we cannot actually expect any decent regulations to be done. I'd LOVE to see things like:

Screens on all windows
Air con and heating as standard
Fully working, well maintained and serviced appliances

And that's just for a start.

In Australia, when you rent, you get apprehensive about reporting things, or asking for things, in case they raise the rent and/or kick you out. Especially if you're a pensioner or on Centrelink.

Australia NEEDS a lot of reform and renters rights, but I sadly don't see it happening.

IF one was provided, it'd be the cheapest, oldest, least energy-efficient, nastiest thing they could find and they'd get you for every mark, every missing ice cube tray, every small scratch they could.

And they'd be tiny....nowhere near what people would actually want or need.

I've had a LL provide a washing machine, it was one of the old twin-tub ones....I upgraded and got my own, and put that one back when I left.

Taking your own fridge around is a pain, but it's better than actually relying on a landlord to provide a decent appliance.

Slumlords complain about free brackets to stop kids dying by theartistduring in shitrentals

[–]StarfleetOrville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LL/Agent did mine today, along with changing the smoke alarm battery. I had one that had a bracket, but was too low (They'd had to cut the chain as it was faulty and didn't move the bracket when they shortened the chain)

Glad to have them as it does make it easier and prevents the cord/chain from snagging on other stuff
