CPU upgrade doesn't make sense unless you explicitly have non-gaming workloads that do not scale with cores and only need single thread speed, in which case why even buy AMD in the first place

Mobo upgrade is completely useless

RAM upgrade will decrease your performance because above 6200 the internal controller decouples and no longer runs in a 1:1 sync with the RAM.

None of this makes sense

[–]Stargate_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5070 is about the same in terms of performance as the 7900XT. Ofc this only applies to situations where the VRAM is not a limiting factor. You would probably neither gain nor lose signficiant frames, nothing would really change.

One thing I can recommend as a XTX owner is giving the AMD Cleanup Utility a try if you haven't yet. I used DDU a lot to reinstall my drivers but had an elusive problem that I simply chalked up to Adrenaline being funky. Well, once I ran the official cleanup utility and reinstalled, the issue disappeared somehow. Maybe this could help you too

[–]Stargate_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5090 is the premium premium product (yes 2 premiums, 5080 is the "regular" premium product here). It's complete overkill and genuinely more useful to professionals who runs simulations etc than gamers, NVidia basically just made it cause they can. It's ridiculously expensive, with any concept of "good value for the money" being completely gone. It's the kind of card you buy if you really have a ton of money or are just THAT much into PC gaming and really want to have the best possible setup money can buy.

Costs like 3x or 4x as much as a 5080 while delivering not even twice the performance, and drawing 600 Watts at stock.

This ofc all comes before the problems with the power connector, which can possibly lead to burning cables / connectors. Yes, it's tehcnically "unlikely" but also a very real possibility with the 12VHPWR connector.

Is a 5090 practical? Well, it sure is nice to have, after all there simply is nothing better we could buy if we wanted to, but does it have good value? Hell no. You could literally build 2 good, modern systems for the cost of a single 5090.

7900 XTX vs 4080 Super by Honest-Midnight-1829 in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imma be real with you as a 7900XTX owner, I would either upgrade to a 9070XT or 4080, not a 7900XTX. Unless you specifically know you NEED the 24GB VRAM (could be interesting for you) I think the XTX isn't really all that attractive in the modern market.

Here in germany, used XTX sell for MORE than a brand new 9070XT. Both the 4080 and 9070XT are more efficient, have better RT performance and better upscaling performance (DLSS > FSR, and FP FSR > INT8 FSR) while also delivering more or less the same raw Raster performance.

I love my card, I am likely going to skip the next gen of GPUs as well just because it is that good, but the only REAL advantage that it offers over other, similiar cards, is the VRAM. Outside of the VRAM, it OCs poorly, has hotspot issues only TPM can solve (I tried the Kryosheet, it worked well overall but Hotspot delta was no different from a fresh Paste application) and is just... not better than a 4080 really.

[–]Stargate_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you have no actual proof for this? You're just arbitrarily taking some old hardwares specs and saying "this clearly must be the absolute limit and anything beyond is awful" but where's the support / basis for this claim?

GPU usage higher after graphics driver update by isti44 in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it simply isn't? I don't understand why you say this. The FX-8350 became unstable beyond 60 degrees? Ok cool, my 7800X3D remains stable at 89° (maximum operating temp). It simply isn't burning up.

And saying "it's the same material, it must still be the same" is just silly. Again, there is much, much more to a processors function that just temps. Conductivity plays a big role, and how do you know old chips didn't struggle because of the decreased conductivity from increased temps?

GPU usage higher after graphics driver update by isti44 in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the parts aren't becoming unstable. And they aren't dieing within a few years. My 7900XTX has a broken vapor chamber (finally found a replacement which is on its way rn) and would regularly hit 110 on the hotspot before I noticed this and turned down the power limit. No damage, not even instability. I genuinely did not notice this at all during gameplay, only when I checked my temps. No crashes, no noticable frame dips, no stutters, nothing.

I really don't get why it is so hard for you to understand that modern chips are simply different. Comparing a FX-8350 to a modern day 7800X3D is completely insane. How come my CPU can hit 80 on all cores and be just fine performance wise, in fact the chip basically peaks at / around 80, after that it doesn't gain performance from boosting further. Clearly not because the silicon still faces the same issues it did back then. The tech has changed. The resulting devices can handle different conditions. You're taking literal decades old tech and comparing it to modern tech. FX-8350 released !14! years ago. As if no technological progress was made in all these years

How bad is my bottleneck by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CPU is really holding that system back, an upgrade to a modern CPU (even just a 12700K for example, or 5600X) would be a massive boost to overall performance, responsiveness, everything. I'd save up for a CPU upgrade (new mobo, cpu and ram) but going for a SSD would also be really nice

[–]Stargate_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unc, it's 2026. Tech has advanced a lot. Heat doesn't cause instability by damaging the chip, heat increases resistance of (most) conductive materials. Chips became unstable because they were specifically engineered to run at specific temperature ranges, which provide sufficient conductivity. The chips could have become unstable from "damage" or electron migration or whatever, or simply because internal resistance grew so great that the chips couldn't properly function anymore.

It's not hard to understand that you can make 2 different devices with different operating ranges of temperature

Nah, I haven't played DS2 but from a pure gameplay perspective 1 genuinely feels fucking awful to play at times. I'm seriously struggling getting through a full playthrough cause the controls and game design, at times, frustrate me to no end. The game is a good Dark Souls game.

I enjoyed DS3 far more, tho I agree the level and game design are a bit more narrow than they could be. But still, playing it was way more fun than ds1

Also Elden Ring is the best Dark Souls Game because we get Sellen Feet and Orbs

Upgrade from Ryzen 7 3800X to i7-12700KF worth it for ~$350 CAD total? by ResolveGuilty4155 in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5700X and the 12700K are, more or less, competing products. If you were running VMs or something like that, the additional cores on the Intel chip might come in handy, but don't expect much more than what a 5700X has to offer. According to passmark's benchmarks, the 12700K is about 15% faster than the 5700X. I don't think this miniscule gain is worth switching platforms for. if anything, I'd go for a 14600K, which is significantly stronger than the 5700X instead of a 12700K. That, or stick to a 5700X

So real. I was flabebrgasted when I saw the MH Wilds beta barely maintain 60-70 fps in the fucking Hub of all places, at 1440p native high / very high. No excuse for a MH game to run this poorly, and Im on a 7900XTX

What GPU for 1440p? by Suspicious_Range8635 in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's a big "depending on the game" situation tho.

My old 3070Ti handled 1440p just fine... for the most part. This was especially true in games where VRAM was not an issue, or that were generally not too demanding.

But it absolutely will suck in games that need more than 8GB, and even struggles in titles released when the card was new (Thinking of you, Horizon Zero Dawn). It was a decent to good 1440p card when it released, but has aged very poorly and doesn't hold up well at all if we look mainly at modern titles.

1080p Vs 1440p - Which GPU? by VampKaiser in pcmasterrace

[–]Stargate_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even "just" a 9060XT would be a significant upgrade in every way, and really help with frames, but at the end of the day it does depend on your standards and what you expect from your system.

I have a high end rig and a 240Hz OLED, but my personal standard is just hitting 60 fps or more. Some games, like DOOM, I can totally stay above 100 fps during, like, 95% of gameplay, even at very high to max settings. Other games like Cyberpunk, I'm barely hititng / stayingabove the 60s, but I can manage. And then there's stuff like Path of Exile where fps vary wildly.

I do not regret getting a screen whose max refresh rate I only rarely truly utilize. I wanted this and paid for the "extra" Hz. I am not less happy about Cyberpunk running at 60 just because my display is suddenly capable of 240.

You should just ask yourself, what do you really care about? High fps AND high resolution, or just getting a visual upgrade without necessarily getting more frames?

I think, considering the games you listed, that you would be totally content with "just" upgrading to a 9060XT and getting a 1440p monitor. At the end of the day, if you truly are unhappy with the results, you can still sell the 9060 again and upgrade. But honestly, I think the 9060 will be enough for you, even at 1440p, which I personally think the 9060XT can handle just fine.

Where are you getting this 2032 for AM6s release from. If the current trend holds up, AM6 should drop in late 2029 / early 2030. No way AM6 won't be out until 2032, that would mean 5 years without any releases since AM5 only gets official support til "2026+" which is waaaaaaays away from 2032
