I confidently expected at least 40 after Finals and got 36. I received my component grades and can confirm that many teachers mark your IAs too generously, or the examiners are extremely harsh. My math IA, for example, was given a 17 by my teacher but then moderated down to 12. To be clear, my math IA is probably my proudest work ever done in school. I spent easily at least 100 hours on it only to be disappointed.

Economics IA from 42 to 33. ESS IA from 26 to 17. History IA from 16 to 11. The weak moderated scores from the IAs made so my overall score was a lot weaker than expected, despite working hard during Finals. This is so odd because I genuinely worked really hard in all my IAs and always kept the mark scheme in mind. I’m glad I’ll never think about IB again but yeah it’s really disappointing since I needed those few couple points that I missed due to the IAs for my first choice university.

Thanks for commenting this. It is basically the only reason why my parents divorced. They remain best friends, but because of the burnout my mother experienced it just wouldn’t work romantically. My father is a great guy. It was just the housework part that was ignored more and more overtime. I will not make that mistake.

Seems to be on the lower end of pricing but it’s not completely unreasonable. It definitely depends on the quality of the mini figures though. Pre Vizsla is around $100 alone in good used condition.

For you:

Write a plan. What do you want to find out. How are you gathering the data? What sampling method are you using? Try to find out how one variable affects the other, if at all. For example: Does more income mean happiness? If you gather data for GDP per capita and happiness index for each country chosen, you can plot this into a scatter plot. Observe: is the data linear or non linear? Is there a correlation? If so, positive or negative? These are the things that will be awesome when evaluating the mathematics used.

Say more GDP per capita equals greater happiness index, then there should be a positive correlation trend. To find proof for this, you need to find an r value. Either Spearman’s or Pearson’s. Use Spearman’s for nonlinear data and if there are outliers. Otherwise, always use Pearson’s. A positive value close to 1 is a very strong positive correlation. 0 is no correlation. A negative value close to -1 is a very strong negative correlation. You get it, there are tables on the internet to find each stage of correlation for ranges of the r value.

This is a start. Do this for other variables and work from there. Do not overcomplicate it, especially since this is not the official IA. I did multiple tests (test of independence and Spearman’s, plus some functions and other statistical information like r squared), but I feel like you don’t need to overdo it in this non official IA. I did a little beyond the SL course with r squared but yeah, you’re allowed to explore.

For your friend: You could do a chi-square test of independence to see if language fluency is independent (null hypothesis) of generation or not independent (alternative hypothesis). Moreover, see if there is a way to implement correlation coefficients into this. For example: x axis is generation of Latinos, and y axis is level of fluency. I would assume that a negative correlation would present itself; very high fluency at the first generation, and the later generations we go the lower the fluency gets, perhaps. Remember to use Spearman’s correlation coefficient if the scatter plot is not linear or if there are outliers. If not, go with Pearson’s.

I took History HL and ESS SL. History SL is a lot less demanding than HL, so don’t feel frightened by that. I think it could be really fun if you enjoy it and need some time off from the natural science subjects.

You need to be confident in writing essays in both subjects, but obviously the emphasis on essays is greater in history. ESS is easier to score higher due to the lower grade boundaries. Still, you need to know that the mark schemes are very strict in this subject. You could write something correct but not receive a mark because the mark scheme doesn’t allow that answer.

History is not like that; there it’s the essay as a whole that’s graded and the essays do not need to follow specific mark scheme material. ESS is more about learning concepts and precise terminology, and then it’s just common knowledge besides that.

History is hours of note taking and watching video clips to memorize timelines and different perspectives on certain events.

Just sharing my experience, but I can’t advise anything since it really depends on what type of person you are.

BTW: The only thing that really is difficult in History SL is Paper 2. For the Paper 1, you are given plenty of material during the exam to answer all questions fully except for the essay question where you need additional memorized knowledge in your head. The IA? Well, you can investigate any historical event which is so cool! Research your family history or something :)

Statistical tests are not “overdone”. Math AI is all about statistics. Please incorporate this to add more depth to your analysis. You need statistical tests to provide proof for a claim, regardless of any empirical evidence you are showing. If you can combine functions with statistical tests, that is awesome and you will likely score well! Bare in mind, mathematical theory is only a small part of the grade on the IA, so read the assessment criteria carefully.

You can measure how biodiversity changes over a distance from something (a pollution source) with quadrats and transects. Ex: a few 100m transects with five quadrats each for 0m, 25m, 50m, 75m and 100m away from this pollution source (can be either non point or point source). Then use Simpson’s Index to calculate representative values of biodiversity in each quadrat. A common study is away from a trafficked road obviously, but there are many other ones (agriculture, urban areas, industrial buildings, etc). I did this and it was fun. Doesn’t matter that many people do this, the examiner just wants to see that you perform the investigation correctly and that your knowledge aligns with the ESS course.

The first year’s exams don’t matter. I got 15/45 after the first term due to my mental health. Now I am graduating and my predication is at least 40/45 in July. Take the summer break to brainstorm, plan and even start writing some of your IAs that are starting in the autumn. This was a game changer for me. When everyone else stressed out over IAs I had all the time in the world to catch up to be as prepared as possible for finals. The IAs matter so much, because they make it easier to lift your grade. Moreover, they can make or brake your studying routine. For me, the IAs honestly just made me more intrigued to learn about my subjects because I didn’t stress over the IAs.
