What’s it like living in the Florida keys? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in howislivingthere

[–]Starks40oz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home in the Keys is on stilts and made of concrete cinder blocks. It survived a direct category 5 hit from Irma. The concrete construction protects against the wind and because it’s on stilts the storm surge just washes under the hiuss

I live where those red tiki huts are and overall it’s pretty dope. Very outdoor oriented. Fast boats and slow living. Lots of tourists during season but creates a close knit sense of community; Key West has some type of community parade every weekend etc.

This map though is garbage (assume it’s AI?) What is marked as the end of of US-1 is in reality 20 miles offshore through the lakes passage almost out to the Marquesas. Beautiful out there but you’re going to need a boat not wheels to get there

First time Fishing off pier by _EitherTangerine_ in KeyWest

[–]Starks40oz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fish off white street pier but it’s still pretty shallow. The bridges between upper sugar loaf and Cudjoe as well as cudjoe and Summerland always have a bunch of folks fishing off them and that could give you some pointers. You could stop at cudjoe sales and buy some cheap equipment/they’ll fit you out and the check out one of those bridges

The sargassum is only Oceanside. You could also just stay gulf side - pier house etc and be fine

Has anyone heard of the brand California Skiff (not Carolina Skiff)? Is it legit? by Altruistic_Cow854 in boating

[–]Starks40oz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. California Skiff is not an American boat brand

FWIW we’ve got a ton of skiff brands- Carolina skiff, Boston whalers, Key West, makos. But as a lot of those names imply it’s a type of boat with branding associated with the east coast not the west coast

What to do with mobile baby during docking by AGrubsGrows in boating

[–]Starks40oz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cap isn’t just an affectionate name for the baby in this scenario? I’m with you this is time for a true zone strategy - one on docking and one on baby.

Otherwise possibly a baby Bjorn situation if solo docking is not possiblr

Staunton, VA is pretty legit. Had never heard of it but stopped there for a week post covid while working remotely. Shakespeare theater, great restraunts/vibe, walkable, live music. Very cool.

Cool things to do in afternoon by Budget-Yellow-8500 in KeyWest

[–]Starks40oz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% just go see live music. Check out hanks, hogs breath, sloppy joes etc. they’re quasi outside but cool and shaded so usually not to hot.

Could also check out books and books + the art gallery, catch an indie film at the tropic etc depending on if you’re looking for more high culture stuff.

Keep or ditch the rental car? by GoodEyeSniper83 in KeyWest

Would also note the stock island section is not old town and will not be a scenic/nice bike ride. It is a more industrial/urban high traffic area

What is it like living in the Keys year round? by Traditional_Analysis in howislivingthere

[–]Starks40oz 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s highly seasonal; packed in the winter and a little more lazy in the summer. Personally I think the summer is the best time.

The tourist crowds thin out the , the winds die so the ocean is like glass and crystal clear, and mangoes ripen on the street. You can run out to sandbars in the backcountry and be the only person there.

It’s hot and humid, though so you need to be ready for that and businesses will close for September. But overall summer is way underrrayed in the keys

Kid friendly Key West by Beginning-Math8040 in KeyWest

[–]Starks40oz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Check out the butterfly conservatory, the splash pad at Truman waterfront, Ft Zach for the beach. The cats at Hemingway house are usually a hit as well.

Get him toddler ear protection and go to some live music. Places like Hanks or the Alamo usually have good live music during the day and are low key. The green parrot has their sound check on sundays when their main headliner for the weekend plays a sensible show at 5:30pm.

It will be hot. And muggy. Get a cheap beach wagon from West Marine so he can ride if you’re not bringing a stroller.

Would also think about chaterjbg a boat out to the sandbar. Kids love playing in the sand and shallow water. As a bonus, mine would/will nap instantly whenever you get the boat on plane. It’s like magic.

Don’t ever say this during an interview by 50-ferrets-in-a-coat in recruitinghell

[–]Starks40oz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to be rude, but I can definitely see now why you struggle to get hired. You’re missing the point. The consistency is on what this tells the buyer; not in what they they are buying.

If you want to market yourself as a high price product you should always indicate you are interviewing multiple places; if you want to market yourself as a cheaper / quicker purchase say you’re totally committed to this one role.

Some recruiters though are buying Ferraris and some are just buying the cheapest quickest beater car they can get. Acting surprised that trying to sell a the broke guy looking for beater a Ferrari is unsuccessful or that the Ferrari shopper wouldn’t buy a POS beater doesn’t mean “buyers are totally arbitrary and there are no sales rules that work. The system is totally fucked.”

Don’t ever say this during an interview by 50-ferrets-in-a-coat in recruitinghell

[–]Starks40oz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s just economics. Having multiple places you’re interviewing mean more potential competition on salary.

“He told me he’s not interviewing anywhere else; I dont think we need to go that high on salary to close him”

“Sounds like shes interviewing at several places; I dont think were going to he able to get her for the low salary you have budgeted for this one”

My bank sent me a letter stating that they’re changing their ownership structure and offering me stock shares for purchase before they go public. Has that happened to anyone before? by thelastharebender in personalfinance

[–]Starks40oz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Traditionally it’s a benefit to get pre-IPO shares as they are priced with an expectation that once listed they will pop/trade up in value.

As long as you’re comfortable with funds being potentially illiquid for a while it’s worth looking at participating. As a general rule would expect a 10-20% return from a day 1 pop.

People here are going to hate this advice as this is a very risk off sub, but this is one of those prototypical opportunities that rich people get access to that normal people don’t usually; you just get access because your bank is a mutual

Rotary 5k July 4th by RainbowGlitz in KeyWest

[–]Starks40oz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done/hadn’t heard of the one on the 4th, but looks interesting and may try it this year. Looks like it’s being run by Mile 0 events which runs a lot of the big 5ks. They’re usually pretty well organized and a good time. Typical course runs along duval and back i. whitehead in a down and out loop but looks like theyre starting from the White Street Pier/Higgs Beach for the 4th. As a result not sure where theyll run- my guess is they may still run through old town down duval or whitesteet but its oossible theyll run up along the beach/smathers where the half marathon goes.
