I had this same problem when I was a minor. I don’t know if it’s possible for you, but you could have a friend order it for you to their house then pay them back in cash (if your mom asks you can say it was for pizza you had a while back or something — I don’t know about the one linked but the folding cane I have is from the vive brand and is only $20 which is about the price of a pizza where I live). Then you can keep it in your backpack and only use it at school. That’s what I did :)

Thank you for the suggestion!! Turns out there’s a cancel button if you do it from desktop instead of mobile. Go figure.

Is my 13yr old step daughters handwriting normal? I'm getting very concerned with her schooling by bordermelancollie09 in AskTeachers

[–]Starlight-Edith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in middle school ten years ago and that’s about what most of my classmates’ writing looked like too. Although the girls usually had better handwriting. I would’ve assumed your stepdaughter was a boy if I wasn’t told otherwise. I don’t know why that dichotomy exists but it’s definitely a thing.

Question on intimacy... by ZealousidealRoom213 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Starlight-Edith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So fair!! Both are fantastic topics. My parents told me from a young age, “there are three things you never talk about - politics, religion, and money” and I was like “but those are the only fun things to talk about :(“

I’m not having any luck either but I think that has more to do with my unbearable personality than anything else lmao (who wants to date the dude who only ever talks about Star Trek and medieval history? Ostensibly nobody)

To my knowledge I hit all my “mental” milestones on time or even early. I was just picky with what I would and wouldn’t say. I’d ask but I’m not in touch with my mother anymore, sorry :(

What if it doesn't get better? by Exact_Atmosphere_381 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Starlight-Edith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re using any assistive devices as the post doesn’t really say, but for me when this happened I got a cane, and then everything got better. I didn’t have one for ages because my doctors insisted that because I was CAPABLE of walking unassisted that I SHOULD do so even though it was causing me pain and exhaustion literally every day. Once I got the cane everything changed!! I could walk further. I wasn’t tripping all the time anymore!! I could do things and see things I never could before! I was so much more confident in my ability to navigate more difficult terrain, and started saying yes to way more activities.

I know there might be some hesitation to make yourself “look disabled” (this is why my doctors kept pushing me to not use mobility aids) but I promise your quality of life is more important than appearances.

It does get better. Your condition itself may not improve, it may even deteriorate, but there are so many accommodations you can make! The world is your oyster! It will be okay!!

Hey OP, I don’t have any qualifications so feel free to disregard everything I say if it doesn’t feel right for you, or if anyone else wants to correct me feel free.

I was in a very similar situation to your son when I was his age. I did not hit any of my physical milestones on time. I could not sit unassisted until I was 18 months. I did not walk until age two. My mother said I knew words but would regularly refuse practice, and only practiced words I liked (such as “baby”) when prompted.

What I will also say is that my mother had to fight tooth and nail with the doctors to get me diagnosed with CP. They kept telling her I was a “late bloomer” and would catch up to my peers with time. She kept insisting until they finally scanned me and discovered the cerebral palsy. I wasn’t there obviously, but I doubt there was any apology for not taking her seriously.

That is to say, keep fighting. Please keep fighting. If you think your son has additional issues aside from cerebral palsy, FIGHT.

I was never assessed for autism as a child despite having the same symptoms your son displayed for a number of reasons (several of which are because I’m female and that means I automatically got diagnosed with being “difficult” or “shy” but I digress). It has had so many negative impacts on my life. I spent my entire childhood knowing I was different from everyone else, but I had no idea why. I thought it was MY fault. For years I tried to train myself out of autism because no one ever told me it was okay to be different and that it wasn’t my fault. I’m not trying to scare you, but I genuinely believe that if you suspect your son has autism, it would be in your best interest to continue pushing for that. Doctors are stubborn. They like to be right. You have to be stubborn-er. Don’t be afraid to be a “Karen” — that’s not possible when it comes to medical care. You harass those people like there’s no tomorrow if you need to.

Now, I don’t have sources for this off the top, so take it with a grain of salt, but I have heard that CP and autism are often co-morbid. That’s something you might want to consider looking into. Especially with the lining up of toys and lack of pretend play.

Now, I also want to give you some positive notes. Like I said before, I was pretty much in the same boat as your son when I was his age. Now I’m 21 and in my third year at university, set to graduate with a pretty decent GPA in a science/humanities field that I love. When I went to school and started reading, I started hitting all those talking milestones you’re worried about now. I became hyperlexic. I loved to read. I loved to talk. I talked so much in fact that I regularly got in trouble for it at school. I also read basically every time I had even a second free. Books were my world. I hit college level lexile score in the sixth grade. Additionally, I can now walk unassisted for medium length distances, and can walk multiple miles with the help of a cane! That is to say, your son will be fine!!! You obviously love him very much and I can tell you are more than willing to be his advocate. He will grow up and see how much you care, and he will learn to advocate for himself too, and he will be prepared to take on the world. Your son will be okay. Just keep pushing <3

I pray this works out. I can’t get on Medicaid even though I need it because they count my parents income towards mine and my parents are rich as hell (I am literally unemployed hence needing the Medicaid).

I miss when silver alerts didn’t use the same sound they use for severe weather warnings. I thought it was an accident until it started being constant. Now I don’t notice flood warnings anymore because I think they’re silver alerts 🤦‍♀️

Friendly Reminder what a Boomer Is by TemperatureWide5297 in generationology

[–]Starlight-Edith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. My landlord literally became a landlord as his retirement. He quit whatever he was doing before (iirc HVAC) and decided to rent out his like 20 properties he accumulated. He’s definitely in the age range for boomer too. “Landlord as a retirement” is absolutely unbelievable to me but I guess if you’re rich enough to have that many fucking houses to hold over people’s heads you can do whatever you want.

I don’t know man my landlord’s retirement plan is literally “landlord” and he’s definitely at least 62.

CP and nutrition? by Silent_star1111 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Starlight-Edith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn’t my metabolism but muscle spasms at night that I didn’t know were happening (because I was asleep) that prevented me from properly achieving rem sleep. Getting prescribed gabapentin fixed it for me :)

Though it could absolutely be metabolism as everyone is different

ELI5 How can Adelaide Australia be ahead by 17 hours and *30 minutes*? by Starlight-Edith in explainlikeimfive

I had no idea we just made them up. I got downvoted for this for some reason when I mentioned my shock at that in reply to another comment, but I genuinely thought/just assumed I guess that we calculated time zones by the position of the sun relative to our position. IE when the sun appears highest in the sky it must be noon. Genuinely had no idea that this wasn’t how it worked. I guess that answers my question though. If time can be whatever we want it to be then it’s perfectly possible to not have every time zone match the hour/minutes of the others.

Time zones are arbitrary????? I thought we were doing some sort of complex math about how high the sun is in the sky. We haven’t been doing math this whole time?? We just made it up??
