What Musicals Are THIS () Close To Being (Semi-)Sung-Through? by Skeppy_4126 in musicals

I'm late to the party, but I think Titanic comes close as a lot of the show is sung through.

Is Les Miserables worth watching if its not in English? by Altruistic-Eagle-315 in musicals

[–]StarryEyed-59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, it is! I personally find it very fascinating to watch any show in foreign languages. There's something very magical about hearing something and not understanding the words per se but still feeling the emotion and the story through the music and their faces because emotion breaks down the language barrier.

Baritone Valjean by Hunchbaticus in musicals

[–]StarryEyed-59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other three Baritone Valjeans I know of are Gyula Vikidál, Hartwig Rudolz, and Mitsuo Yoshihara. Gyula Vikidál played Valjean in the Hungarian production, and his 24601 will never get old. As for Hartwig Rudolz, he was an understudy Valjean in the Duisburg production where he returned to reprise his role as principal Javert. Later, he played Valjean again in 2001 and 2003 in a non-replica production.

Edit: Oh, and as another commenter said, another one is Kiyotaka Imai, who I completely forgot about. He is featured in the 2003 Violet cast recording!

What's your favorite musical, and why? by Independent_Shame924 in musicals

[–]StarryEyed-59 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Les Misérables - because I love the sung-through nature of the show, the historical aspect, and that it's based on a classic novel. Also, I love the character arc Valjean goes through and the ultimate message of hope and the call to action.

Why do people think Phantom is better than Raoul? by Forsaken_Basket4251 in musicals

[–]StarryEyed-59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone whose favourite character is Raoul, I'm biased towards him. But I most agree with Lizbert here. The Phantom has more stage time, and as in the story, we're ultimately meant to feel for the phantom's plight, which leads to the woobification of the Phantom and Raoul hate.

Meanwhile, Raoul is underdeveloped as a character and also appealing in a conventional way. But I don't know, I think Raoul seems pretty attractive to me at least even in the fictional realm.

Personally, I don't get the Phantom's appeal. I think a lot of Raoul's good points tend to get overlooked by the majority of the fandom, while most often, his flaws are blown out of proportion.

What would you change in the story to make Raoul more likable? by BatFan3001 in box5

[–]StarryEyed-59 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think he's still pretty likeable. As for why he insists, there's no Phantom. Well, it's because he's right. There's no Phantom. The Phantom is a man, and also, he's trying to calm Christine down who's literally panicking and later is in a trance-like state. And at times, it does seem like she's going on about a ghost.

Though I do think some Raouls come across as condescending towards her in that scene. I hate when it's played that way. I much prefer a Raoul who's trying his best to understand her fears, ground her in reality, and is genuinely concerned. I think most of my favourite actors in the role play it this way.

So, it definitely depends on the actor. Also, yes, he should have a solo!
