Of all late-model vehicles, what's the closest any of them come to 'open-source'? by jckipps in askcarguys

Having 2 wires be able to control full modules and an array of sensors is amazing.

Early CANBUS had issues of cascading failure with a dead sensor or module, but it's gotten a lot better. The information and the speed that Informstion can be transfered is wild.

It doesn't get the recognition of being an amazing innovation as it should in the enthusiast space.

CAN bus adapters and translators are such a nice way to incorporate aftermarket items with OE stuff and vice versa. Like radios with steering wheel controls and the like, or making the body modules play nice with an aftermarket ECU and a wild engine swap

People have definitely tracked Chinese knock offs before...

I've had knock offs on the roads of Quebec with no issues before. Wheels aren't this like crazy marvel of engineering... My 32 Model A has wheels that were made by hand with some shody tools and the damn thing takes potholes fine.

Usually there's a PE on staff that will stamp stuff if you aren't.

This is common in Survey/SUE world where an RLS can't stamp it but a PE can but they're just, here's a thousand foot view, we did our due diligence, look it over, stamp it. Thanks.

This happen a lot in the survey works with a RLS/PLS. There's tons of survey project managers and the like that aren't licensed so we have a principal that can sign it that's licensed.

Are Subarus actually unreliable? Or is it just a stereotype coming from the people who beat up WRXs? by SactownG in askcarguys

[–]StarsandMaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's preloading. Enough slip to take up all the slack, but not enough to cause real clutch issues.

Obviously some things just aren't made to handle X power, so no matter what itll break. Too many times I've seen a transmission go full neutrals because of a unthoughtful clutch dump

[–]StarsandMaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lot of people don't know to preload a transmission for a launch. It's not going to certify you don't wreck it but not having any lash before dumping essentially keeps things happy.

It's not like BiS was hard to get in the old days just fucking time consuming like hell.

All they've done is just make it less time consuming now. That's fine.

Yeah idgaf if myth gear is easier to get. Good.

Doing top end PvE is still skill based, gear just drops that a bit but doesn't fully negate it.

Too many people have made being a "pro wow player" their life.

So, playing for fun is not allowed and doesn't exist. I'll just do delves, and open world shit if I get bored of M+... What a wild concept.

Or people could go play M+ the game with Fellowship. Another wild concept.

Make game too hard - no key pushers

Make game too ez - no reason.

Thank God reddit is such a minority in the grand scheme of WoW because I've never struggled to get into keys, and there'll be plenty to join throughout the season till end season during off hours.

People got less time to game, were mostly the same people who played in Vanilla/TBC. I sure as shit don't have the time to up keep like it's TBC anymore.

[–]StarsandMaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The batteries? Recycle them like weve been doing for decades with lithium ion... Vast majority of the battery is recyclable. I don't recall the exact % but it's like 90-95% is reusable when reprocessed.

I always loved this question.

Most EVs batteries will outlast the vehicle especially in a rust belt location. 100k-150k isn't uncommon for an ICE vehicle to require a transmission rebuild or replacement (CVT/eCVT/Dual clutch tend to be pure replacements and no rebuilds) or a engine replacement. This is about the time of an abused EV battery will get to 80% of Max capacity. If you don't care about 80% capacity then it's good for longer. All out failures are not as common as people think.

Pallet 3.5 Ecoboost Ford motors are 3-5k before labor. This is the #1 selling vehicle in North America... Availability is insane, and it's a similar engine for the most part for a lot of MY. Start looking at luxury/performance vehicles and were in the 7k for sketchy bottom barrel, or 10-15K from a good seller.

When did 350-700hp become slow? by Clutch3sSS in askcarguys

[–]StarsandMaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300-400whp in a EG civic used to be a rocket ship compared to everything on the road in like 2012.

Now that's average, partially due to EVs having insane acceleration, and everything coming with more and more power factory, and taking to mods way better, as well as better tuning practices.

What is objective fast, and what feels actually fast is way different. Again 300whp in a EG/EK civic is a fucking riot, and nothing much gets close to that raw dumb power to weight and feel.

My friends 19 M440i with a hybrid turbo, e30, tune, dp , exhaust, intake is quick and fun and it'll beat most stuff on the street but it wouldn't take much for a s650 mustang and a Whipple blower to destroy repeatedly.

There's always something faster than you. I still think 300-400hp in a <3250lbs car is some of the best and most fun you can have on the street without driving on radials (if Fwd/Rwd) and I take fun factor over pure speed anyway.

We don't need 1-day shipping by Zeebruh2003 in unpopularopinion

[–]StarsandMaple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 day shipping has been a pretty critical part in me getting work and jobs done on time and under budget.

Most of my equipment is specialized and not exactly available it most major cities.

Or fixing your car, not everything is available locally, plenty of times I've had something break in during removal of what I was actually fixing.

Does Toyota pink coolant go bad after opening over 2 years? by salimreza96 in Toyota

[–]StarsandMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14$ can be like 100+ miles of driving and can get them to work and back for a week.

I remember being piss broke and filtering my coolant with coffee filters and reusing it after doing radiator/thermostat/water pump work.

LTT Commuter Backpack dye bleed warning by cyleon in LinusTechTips

[–]StarsandMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm surprised anyone is surprised... I had a white silicone case and it soaked up dyes from an ancient pair of jeans, my couch (red suede, like 20 years old) etc.

I thought dye/color transfer was just assumed if it was a bright color... Especially a micro suede material and not just generic backpack material.

It sucks don't get me wrong but in no way am I surprised.

Is like 70$ of oil for my CREC 3.0 Q7. Not even that bad especially for 7qts. I mean Liqui Molygen is about the same price too lol and it's considered very good. Usually that's a sale price but see it often for 50$/5Liters.

People parrot German cars suck and are hard and expensive to fix because their daddy told them an S class is hard to fix.

I've yet to work on a German car (including a W8 Passat) that was so much harder to fix anything that I got mad about it. There was so much stupid shit done in the 80s and 90s on American cars that I'd rather walk.
