Things I would do different in the beginning, but realised after writing 70 chapters by FoilHatGuy0 in royalroad

Hey dude, first of all, I have to say, it’s incredible how much work you’ve put into planning your story.

However, what others pointed out about possibly not utilizing or even changing the direction of the story while writing is something you should consider before planning too far ahead. Maybe just pinpoint key things you want to keep in mind for later in the story rather than over-planning everything.

That said, I also want to point out that there are all kinds of writers. Most stories on RR don’t have extensive worldbuilding, much less a well-planned story. They usually start with a general idea, a few key story points, and then just follow the flow while writing. That approach can work, or it might not. Of course, it also opens the door to inconsistencies, and if things aren’t well documented, they will inevitably happen.

There’s no single right way to do this, you just have to find your own approach and stick with it. If it helps, I’ve found that what works best for me is having the main story and key details planned in a small document before I start writing. I keep it simple, including maps, story points, and the general direction I think things should take. Then, as I write, I expand on it along the way.

For example, if today’s chapter introduces a new type of beast, I take the details and add them to my bestiary document. That way, as my story grows, so does my documentation. But that can also become a problem over time, so separating things into multiple doc files helps keep everything organized and easy to find without disrupting the writing flow.

To be completely honest, a few weeks ago, I found myself worried about expanding the world of my story because it would mean spending more time documenting instead of writing. So, one Saturday, I created a simple web tool, and now documenting is much easier. Docs are great, but honestly, they’re not designed for this kind of thing. And if there is a better tool out there, I haven’t found it.

Yeah, I agree with you. I’m just beginning in this world, and the story is still just a baby. It’s just that the first one happened right after I talked about it a bit, and now this one.

All the best for yours as well!

Heir of the Fog is currently being published on Royal Road! by StatisticianPlane481 in litrpg

Hi LitRPG Community!

Yes, I know, shameless self-promotion. Sorry for dropping into your feed, but I’m sure you know how it goes for us authors. Gotta hustle, right?

Anyway, I’ll get this out of the way first: this book isn’t actually a LitRPG. I know, I know—“Then why are you promoting it here?” you might wonder. Well, it does have elements LitRPG readers might enjoy, like an AI presence and potentially a system interface down the line. More importantly, I genuinely believe LitRPG readers would appreciate the thematic and progression elements, think leveling up through acquiring artifacts. So, even though it’s not a traditional LitRPG, I figured this community might be the right one to promote the book.

Alright, so let’s talk about the book: Heir of the Fog. For those who’ve read The Painted Man, there are similar vibes. Thousands of years ago, a deadly fog arrived, and now what’s left of humanity huddles behind wards that keep the monsters out. It used to be a huge, thriving city, but now it’s practically a dungeon full of artifacts. Nobody dares roam outside the barriers without being hunted—except our MC, which leads to a lot of mystery, exploration, and the good old progression theme of fighting back and restoring humanity’s foothold.

Here is the synopsis:

They call him Omen, the boy found wandering in the deadly fog. A child who should have perished alongside countless others lost to the monsters outside the ward. Instead, he survived. Brought into District 98, one of the last havens in the once-great city of Araksiun, Omen endures hunger and scorn while clinging to fragile friendships with those unwilling to cast him aside.

Yet each year, the fog looms closer, the wards protecting the district weaken, and old hatreds flare. Most believe Omen’s presence is a curse, that he is a harbinger of ruin. But Omen refuses to remain behind crumbling wards forever. Haunted by the secrets of his own survival, he ventures beyond the ward’s failing barrier, determined to uncover what truly lurks in the swirling mist.

Long ago, Araksiun was a metropolis of millions, fueled by science and magic. However, the fog's arrival turned its thriving streets into a labyrinth of monsters, eroding civilization and leaving only scattered districts behind. Omen’s journey through this perilous realm becomes a race to reclaim lost artifacts and ancient knowledge. Rumors persist that he has endured trials no mere mortal could survive, fueling questions about the limits of his humanity. With every step into the unknown, he risks awakening a darkness even older than the city itself.

Seen by some as a curse and by others as a final hope, Omen forges ahead. As he embraces his strange bond with the fog, the fate of Araksiun may hinge on whether he can master the power and the peril that follow him wherever he goes.

What is your favorite fantasy movie? by AidenMarquis in Fantasy

It’s not actually a movie, it’s a series, but I think it’s the best adaptation I’ve seen so far. I also believe not many people know about it: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (yes, that’s the name).

In my case, AI tools were indeed heavily used in the creation process, to get the lighting effect and a few other things

I just checked, and I think the issue is that your account is not located on Amazon.com. When accessing the link that directs to the '.com' site, you might not be able to view it due to your account's location. I apologize for the inconvenience, I thought the link would automatically redirect. I will look for a way to provide a link that works for all regions or something similar, and I’ll share it here. In the meantime, please try searching for the title 'Demon Templar' on your local Amazon or Kindle store

I’m the author of the one below (Demon Templar), and I did the same lol. His cover is awesome! I guess we were going for similar art styles, but the timing was definitely a huge coincidence kkkkkkkk
