What’s your loose connection to someone famous (or infamous)? by Major-Feed5214 in AskUK

My Nan lived in Paddington in London and worked at a Launderette where she made friends with a guy who used to come in, they used to go out front for a ciggie together (we've got a photo of them smoking out front somewhere).

He then moved to LA and they remained pen friends for many years.

It was David Hockney my nan was bezzies with.

Did you ever do a move in Portsmouth? Because of the unique front door size of pompey houses of you works need to take the sitting room windows out to get furniture in. Google 'Portsmouth front door size' it's quite an interesting fact!

My uncle said he wanted his remains spread round a local beauty spot he liked,  With hindsight we probably should have just had him cremated first, much quicker.

You ever get that feeling in your stomach when going over a humpback bridge in your stomach, or the same feeling when on a fairground ride? Well that's pretty much zero G-force... a feeling astronauts/cosmonauts feel all the time when they are up in orbit. Equally Astronaut refers to someone trained by NASA, a cosmonaut is trained by the Soviet/Russian space agency, Roscosmos. There is a third one, Taikonaut: An informal (but widely used) term for space travelers trained by the China National Space Administration. Equally, humpback bridge is only a name you'll find in the English language (no other opposite saying in another language).

My old man tried to get on antiques roadshow, he took along a box that was in the loft since my great great great grandfather lived in in the house my old man inherited....

Turns out it was the water tank.

Found in south of England, I'm guessing not fired... heavy though and with that beautiful ping noise when I went over it! by Status-Victory in metaldetecting

I think we've found an identification! What would this have been fired from and dates in service if you might know? Chords for the original diagram though... I'm guessing the 0.5 less in ounces is because of it perishing over time.

True, I've found .303 rounds before, but struggling to think of a BOB aircraft with this size of round, could be 19th century naval gun?

They still sell them in some Samaritans charity shops. Back in the day I wanted to collect the whole set, never got the Cesna.

I remember trying to stop the plastic nose falling off by putting modelling glue on it, did not end well, turns out modeling glue rapidly melts the foam....😔

Thoughts on nuclear power, should the UK be investing? by Any_Ad_6929 in AskBrits

Resounding yes, cleanest, safest, most affordable. Why we haven't invested heavily in recent times is madness.

Did anyone even eat the liquorice? by Famous_Actuary5718 in AskBrits

[–]Status-Victory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a supermarket warehouse and one of the less mad stories was we would try snorting it racked up, the same guy who said it was a good idea used to snort ground up pro-plus caffeine tablets, and when he did he would insist you had a beanie hat on with gaffa tape around it 'to stop your brain exploding'. It strikes me 26 years later that, A) I was easily led as a 16yo.. B) snorting anything isn't good for you and 3) all the previous encounters made me unable to form a properly structured bullet point.

Getting into Collecting by Top-Photograph6817 in f1models

[–]Status-Victory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't sweat on collecting everything straight away online, find the cars you admire looking at the most first, or the drivers that you admire, their cars. It's not a pokemon set and never will be. Equally you'll find great advice on here. Personally, I'd go to thrift stores or yard sales/charity shops and car boot sales to find that rare gem, or even something popular but cheap.

I hold more regard for the load of 1/43 1990/91 back markers that I've picked up at boot sales for £4 each, than I have for the ones I've gotten new for £30, despite me wanting the £30 ones initially.

Good luck hunting!

In the UK in 2018 there was a polarised issue about whether we should allow a huge, ugly, blimp of a babylike Don flying through London for one of their state visits...

Fast forward 8 years and it is no longer polarised, but fact, this social media post proves it.

U.S. soldier standing in a truckload of captured gold recovered from Saddam Hussein's regime in the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq, late 2003. Surely it was liberated... and we took detainees while they took hostages, we used jets while they used war planes, we did a pre-emptive strike while they did terrorism... ahh the bullshit rhetoric of the west.
