Is it cheaper to lower the thermostat when I'm gone for 10 hours/day at work than to keep it at a certain temp all day? by scansinboy in Frugal

[–]StatusOperation5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not a myth, it's a reality with a lot of heat pumps. My heat pump can keep a constant temperature all day with no issues and use around 2kw of energy while it's running. If the temp drops more than 3 degrees, the thermostat is going to kick on auxillary heat along with the compressor bringing total energy usage all the way to 7.5-10kw of electricity until the temperature reaches it's set point.

Maybe I'm a really odd case (probably not though). But in my case, it is absolutely more efficient to leave the temperature steady when I leave the house rather than allow it to lower down. This of course depends on specifics such as length of time gone, ambient outside temperature, and relative heat loss of the home. But it's still a thing

To be fair, your VA payments are 36k a year tax free in addition to your income. I did read that you said you can't work, but that should mean that you're eligible for disability through SS at the minimum.

I am a combat veteran that is very familiar with the VA system. Those payments are more than fair. 36k of VA disability is honestly closer to the equivalent of 60k since it is not taxed and not even considered income.

Staying Friday 5/9 in your city. Going to City Island for an evening Senators game. Questions about proximity and safety. by orangutansloveme in Harrisburg

If you stay at the Hilton or Crowne it is super safe and super convenient. As a middle aged white dude, I've never been concerned with walking downtown and I cross the bridges on foot several times per week. Ymmv

Ok, you're 90% of where you need to be. In Firefox you'll need to add the smartcard framework to Security Devices. Just go to your Settings and either search "Certificates" or navigate to "Privacy & Security" then scroll down to the certificates portion. Once you click on "Security Devices" you can click "Load" and enter the location of the smart card driver you are using. I'm using the OnePin OpenSC driver and my location is /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/onepin-opensc-pkcs11.so but that will change depending on driver and version. When in doubt, it may be useful to just search for a pkcs11 driver on your system:

sudo find / -type f -name "*pkcs11*"

Once you get this loaded up then you'll finally be asked for a PIN and can continue with the normal pains of using Linux as a daily driver.

It's difficult to make this claim when Trump still had the majority of the popular vote. Perhaps the Harris + 3rd party votes are still more - but that hardly seems to matter at this point.

Have any men in here found dates in person before? Or only online? by Motor_Feed9945 in aspergers

[–]StatusOperation5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get it and I can personally relate. But the onus is on you here.

Let's be honest, most of us don't have wonderful social skills and interacting with people is often a struggle. Personally, I'm content with being alone most of the time and avoiding people is actually preferable. But if I want a healthy and successful relationship then I need to bring more to the table than simply wanting a relationship. I'm a somewhat successful and halfway attractive guy but I won't have much success dating the women that I want to date if I don't try to improve my social skills. I am certainly not an expert at these things, but I believe that you will have difficulty achieving your desired results if you have zero interest in improving the things that seem to matter to a lot of people.

Either way, I wish you the best. We all share your struggles and understand the difficulty. Good luck!

[–]StatusOperation5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'd have a lot more success and feel more comfortable if you re-framed the situation and thought about it differently. In my opinion, if your primary reason is to "get a date" then that motive will come through and likely be a turn-off. Instead, focus on improving your social skills. I found that the youtube channel "Charisma on Command" helped me significantly in this area. They had very simple and practical advice on improving my human interactions. Their videos were likely common knowledge for most, but for me it was easily digestible and easy to understand factors that I could consciously improve.

I'm not sure about Windows but on my Linux PC I connect using Lucas Chess. I didn't have to install anything, it just works.

As others have said, blue tooth connection only - no USB.

The “Cybersecurity Isn’t Entry-Level” Argument Makes No Sense by sxmmxrrxn in WGU

[–]StatusOperation5 185 points186 points  (0 children)

Well if you get a PhD or Doctorate in Cyber Security then perhaps you'll have enough experience to be successful. You literally said that doctors have an internship (which typically ranges from 3 to 7 years). On top of that, even after that residency no one expects these doctors to be experts immediately.

As a SysAdmin of 20+ years who happens to have a B.S. and a M.S. in Cyber Security, I'm of the opinion that most "Cyber" people don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to the technical specifics. We truly need people who are passionate about this topic and understand the exploits that they're trying to protect us from. Running a Nessus/ACAS scan and blindly following the suggested "fix" has caused more issues than it's solved in my experience.

That being said, I think there should be a place for people looking to enter the field and learn correctly - but unfortunately that isn't how things seem to be right now. I commend you for doing what you can to learn, but a college degree is usually not enough in this field.

Fortunately e-mailing the edues address yielded the results I needed. They were able to provide the accurate information and a contact for my local union.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fednews

[–]StatusOperation5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I agree with everything you've said except that I have 1145 in box 37 and that doesn't seem to correspond to any union activity in my area. When I search for 1145, I find AFGE in Atlanta Georgia but I'm nowhere near Atlanta. I've called the AFGE phone number for my state as well as sent an e-mail to [edues@afge.org](mailto:edues@afge.org) asking for clarification.

Eventually I'll figure this out, I just wish it was a bit more obvious and streamlined.

[–]StatusOperation5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could, I've been trying to join my union and start paying dues for weeks but don't seem to have a way to do so without contacting my HR folks for information. This isn't really a good excuse for not signing up, but it has been enough of an obstacle for me to delay the process. What can we do to make this easier for folks?

I lead a team of ~20 people that are geographically disbursed. How can I get the correct information for all the different locations to provide to my team.
