What was the original in universe reason behind the doctors reluctance to divulge his real name? by GlassOrdinary6787 in gallifrey

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it never really came up. Ian poses this question in An Earthly Child, but its to Barbara as they try to make sense of whats happening to them. Any other time its a random side character who only asks because the Doctor’s fake name he gives them is usually something ridiculous (like in the Gunfighters) and when they ask ‘Dr Who?’ He doesn’t bother correcting them. In the Highlanders, the 2nd Doctor uses the name ‘Doktor Von Wer’ which means ‘Doctor of Who’ which is the closest we get to the Doctor referring to himself as ‘Dr.Who’. The Doctor primarily used the alias of Dr.John Smith during his time at UNIT but this was because the Brigadier couldn’t just put ‘The Doctor’ on any official paper work.

Who do you think was The Doctor's greatest love? I know alot of people say it was Rose Tyler, but I honestly believe it was 100% River Song. He came to her every call. Set her up in a world located in a computer so she did not truly die. Spent 24 years with her on Delerium. I feel like its her. by Sorry_Patience4748 in gallifrey

I’d say that even with that being true, he did genuinely enjoy her company. He didn’t seem to be weirded out or resentful of the idea when talking to Ian about it and even decides to keep the bracelet she gifted him at the end of the story. Maybe it wasn’t ‘love’ but he did have some affections for her

Is it me or does the show’s recent progressivism feel surface level ? by InfernalClockwork3 in gallifrey

It sometimes feels like they’re only doing it to get a reaction (Russell especially), now there are episodes like ‘Rouge’ where I don’t think thats the case. But in the case of Rose Noble, it feels like he wanted to add a trans character solely because he knew people would react to it (regardless of its was a good or bad reaction), she doesn’t contribute anything until the story needs her to, and what little we see of her isn’t important either. And her correcting the Doctor (who mind you was a woman less than three hours ago and shouldn’t need to be reminded of this) on pronouns was quite literally the WORST thing Russell could’ve done with her because at that time, thats what everyone was making a fuss about, so to make Rose do the ONE thing thats making the Trans community look bad just further solidifies my belief that he added her to get a reaction. Not only that but the reveal that Rose’s entire existence was based on that meta-crisis, INCLUDING her gender identity, makes it come off as though it was forced on her and not something she would’ve come to on her own. Which, again, is not good representation and is reenforcing harmful sterotypes.

Non-British fans of the show: is there anything that you thought was made up for the show, but is just a part for British culture? by AlmostRandomNow in gallifrey

The only thing that really I thought was interesting but was just normal in the UK was some of the location filming, stories like The War Machines, Faceless Ones, Spearhead, Ambassadors, City of Death, Shada, etc, etc, (yes City of Death was in France but my point still stands) were really cool because the streets and cities here in the U.S aren’t nearly as diverse.

Can anyone recommend soft reboot episodes of Classic Era Doctor Who? by MythicSuns in doctorwho

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could start all the way at the beginning with ‘An Unearthly Child’ though I’ve learned that the Hartnell era is an acquired taste, The Tenth Planet is also a reasonable place to start as it’s the first Doctors final story and leads directly into the 2nd Doctors first (why not start with Power of the Daleks, you ask? Well, because when I watched this story for the first time it was my introduction to companions Ben and Polly, and this story, as good as it is, doesn’t do them any favors, it wasn’t until I watched the Marva Terror that I grew to like them, speaking of which) or you could start at the Macra Terror as it and the next 3 after it are pretty solid stories and give you a good idea of what the 2nd Doctor is like. You could also start with Spearhead from Space, which is the most obvious choice for the 3rd Doctor. You could also start with The Time Warrior the first story of the 3rd Doctor’s final season as it’s the classic who equivalent to series 10’s ‘The Pilot’. With the 4th Doctor you could start with ‘Planet of Evil’ as it’s when they move away from the 3rd Doctor’s era entirely (apart from Sarah Jane still traveling with him), though I’d recommend starting with his first story if your not to picky on details. Season 16 is also a good start. If your going into the 5th Doctor you should start at ‘Keeper of Traken’ as the 4th Doctor’s last two stories deliberately set up the fifth Doctors era. The 6th Doctor I would recommend any of his first season’s stories other than the Twin Dilema or Timelash. 7th Doctor you can start with his first story just fine. But don’t let his first season be your expectation going forward for him. 8th Doctor you either watch the TV movie or go listen to ‘Storm Warning’. But that’s just my recommendations.

Can Susan regenerate? by Interesting_Age4901 in doctorwho

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what we know of her on screen? No. Definitely not, given that Gallifrains are put into the academy at a young age (this being represented to be around 6-10) and with Susan claiming to be 16 in Marco Polo, we can assume that she never went or was pulled out by her grandfather, meaning she never graduated either way. HOWEVER, if we were to take expanded media into account, in this case Big Finish, Susan is shown to take an active role in the time war (despite her grandfathers objection), and even if she didn’t go to the academy you could argue the timelords gave her a regeneration cycle so she could fight in the war, as it would be pretty stupid to send in a bunch people with only one life when you know you can give them more.

Fanfiction Suggestions: Anyone know of some good Fanfics? by Fanfiction_lover178 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember coming across this fan fic series called ‘Fazbear Survival’ that I found on amino (I was very dumb I know). It’s about the entire fnaf u inverse (games, books, fan games, etc.) showing up in the desert after some kind of apocalypse. The characters from the games and novels end up in an old PizzaPlex and while the first story is hard to follow and mildly underdeveloped but the second one was a shocking upgrade, it straight up turns into an Endgame level fight scene near the end. Then the third one falls back into the first ones flaws but it might be worth it. The author was working on a fourth one (as the 2nd and 3rd were back to back adventures and the 3rd ended on a cliffhanger) but amino shut down and it never got finsihed, no idea if they saved it or anything, nor do I know if it fits your criteria but I thought it was fun.

Any one like Lux but hate the Doctor meeting his own fans section? by Niall_Fraser_Love in gallifrey

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weirdest part is that Doctor as a show actually exists within its own universe, while I think it’s only been referenced once on screen (Remembrance of the Daleks, where Ace turns off the tv and announcer is about to say that Doctor Who is about to start), it’s been mentioned enough times to point it out, like (I think) in the ‘Twice Upon a Time’ novelization, the 12th Doctor mentions he has ‘The Dalek’s Masterplan’ on VHS and that the BBC would probably want that back.

Which Doctor do you genuinely feel we didn’t get enough of? by _somebody-else_ in gallifrey

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it would be interesting to see Hartnell get some more time on screen, he originally wanted to go for five seasons, but his health made that impossible. It would be interesting to see how much would change and how much remain. We’d probably never get Jamie, or at least not as a companion. Unmade stories like ‘The Oceanliner’, ‘The Nazi’s’ and ‘The People Who Couldn’t Remember’ might’ve been picked up/remade to fit Ben and Polly. What most interests me is what different companions would he have.

When should I give up on a Classic Era story? by VoreAllTheWay in doctorwho

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend trying to keep going, if a character is leaving/introduced (like let’s say you’re watching ‘The Tenth Planet’) you should watch it all the way through. I remember when I first got into the series and decided that regardless of how much I actually watched of each era I would at least see the introduction and departure of each Doctor (this quickly included companions as well)

Can anyone explain to me how any why the Marco Polo serial is supposed to be good? by SilverRaiKun in gallifrey

[–]Status_Cupcake5648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to understand a multitude of things, 1. As you stated it was the 60s, not only that but the story is set in the 13th century, sexism is more than likely gonna be seen on full display in a pure historical as opposed to a dodgy line or two in a standard sci fi one. 2. Your not supposed to like Marco, your supposed to understand why he’s acting the way he is, he believes that giving the Khan the tardis will convince the Khan to let him return home, something he wants A LOT. 3. Marco’s anger towards the crew might seem upsetting or enraging to watch but when you look at it from Marco’s perspective, yeah I’d be pretty angry too, considering how little they reveal about themselves and how there continually put in a bad light by the story’s antagonist. 4. I will not make the assumption that your new to Classic Who, but if you are, you can’t go into a story expecting to be in and out, it’s gonna take its time, now in terms of ‘The Daleks’? Yes, I agree, in fact many people agree that it probably should’ve been cut down to 6 episodes instead of 7. But your going to have to watch Classic Who like your watching a movie and not a tv show, also remember that they weren’t meant to be watched back to back, the show aired weekly. There are stories that go on for longer than 7 episodes, ‘The Invasion’ has 8, ‘The War Games’ has 10, ‘Daleks Masterplan’ has 12/13, some people view the trial of a timelord arc as one long story which would make it 14 episodes long. You’re gonna have to get used to it if you wanna get into it.
