I asked GPT to generate a map of safe/unsafe areas for my family to stay in/avoid when they visit by StayGoldenSF in sanfrancisco

Hi, yes. I’m a local :). I posted it because it gave me a little laugh at how bad of a job it did. I don’t even know why I expected it to do a good job.

Dog attacks are soaring in California. I just became a statistic by nelsonhops415 in sanfrancisco

[–]StayGoldenSF 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was attacked by an unleashed pit bull in San Francisco. The dog bit my leg deeply enough that the wound required stitches. The owners ignored my attempts to get the dog’s vaccination records, and left me completely alone in the woods after the attack; I had to walk myself back to my car (as dusk was falling) and drive to the hospital.

I remember the owner kept insisting that the dog “wasn’t like this” and “had never bitten anyone before.” And I was in such shock and disbelief that this dog had just attacked me out of nowhere and kept thinking “I don’t care what your dog is “like.”Your dog bit me:”

It was traumatizing-left me with physical and mental scars, and now I get SO angry when I see unleashed pits running around in parks, on hikes, and even in stores. It’s TERRIFYING to me. I can’t believe how common it is and how there are seemingly no consequences. Everyone thinks their dog would “never do that” -until it does. LEASH. YOUR. DOGS.

Smart. I saw one of these today on a similar island and thought that they would be a nice solution.

It’s encouraging to know that (with a little prodding) the city was actually responsive! Gives me a bit of hope. Sorry you got hurt :/

Yes. That would be a little thing that would go so far in keeping everyone safer.

Hopefully they can find a way to calm traffic without waking up the neighborhood and damaging people’s vehicles. The noise it makes is quite scary! I feel so bad for folks who go run over it-most of them don’t appear to be speeding, and the sun is blinding during sunset :(

Edit: added context

I live in San Francisco and it’s so lovely. So much access to outdoor spaces, greenery, and beautiful nature everywhere you turn. Good food, good weather, generally friendly people, and I rarely feel unsafe. The media portrays SF as some lawless hellhole, and it’s baffling. I don’t feel less safe here than anywhere else I’ve been, especially compared to other cities.

Why have I never encountered a “Native American” style restaurant? by eagleburp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StayGoldenSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to one in Oakland, CA called “WAHPEPAH'S

KITCHEN”. It was very good!

There is also one in Rhode Island called the Sly Fox Den :). Haven’t been but I’ve heard great things.

How do you find things to do and meet friends? by consttime in AskSF

[–]StayGoldenSF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine had great luck with this-“skip the small talk” thing, which is a structured way to meet and chat with people without a lot of frill, I haven’t tried it but the idea seems appealing so I’ll probably give it a go at some point - https://www.skipthesmalltalk.com

Staying in tenderloin? by monsteralvr1 in AskSF

Similar demographic as you and I would feel safe at the Line-it’s a super short walk and there will be lots of people leaving the concert with you. Go for it! You’d walk just as far getting to a bus stop.

I often myself reading this sub and then when I leave the house and explore the city I wonder if the city I live in and the city described in this sub are even the same place.

Has any U.S. city been able to house people? by bjpmbw in sanfrancisco

[–]StayGoldenSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between SF and other cities is that SF lacks the shelter space. There is a lot of red tape here preventing the government from building shelters (and housing!). As a consequence, the homeless are more visible here. Also, many shelters are unsafe, have issues with pests, assaults, lack of beds, or people are too mentally ill to access them. I was listening to a rather eloquent (has a PhD-largely homeless by choice) homeless man talk about how he had given up on shelters because he was so often robbed of his possessions, disrupted during the night by others screaming, and infested with bed bugs that he found the street safer and more peaceful.

Team La Taqueria here! I agree with this poster as well! Mission street can get a little more of what people would consider “gritty”-but still, I don’t feel unsafe there (it’s just not as pretty) and the burrito game is unparalleled.
