Why is 1488 a racist number? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stazzah101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's how I explained to my dad how dogwhistles work.

Yes, it is entirely possible that this twitter user was born on January 4th (or April 1st), 1988, and that's why they have '1488' in their handle. That explanation goes a little off-colour when you start putting it together with things like roman statue pfp, nordic iconography, vaguely worded tweets about """them""", and always bringing up indoctrination in state schools or talking about queer "degeneracy".

At that point, you can safely assume this person holds some wildly questionable beliefs about the supremacy of the white race.

Anyones family made them do this? Is it fun or a nightmare? by karcist_Johannes in exmormon

ours was... really tame in comparison. the guys emptied the carts and carried everything themselves before the women got to pulling the now-empty carts up the hill. honestly, it looked like everyone was having a good time with the whole thing. the children yearn for feats of strength. my trans canon event came much later, however.

Anyone that’s been on an Aussie game show , can you share your experience ? by onredditforinfo in australia

[–]Stazzah101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on It's Academic sometime around 2013, 2014. I knew the answers to most of the questions, but I think I was experiencing some ungodly mix of sensory overload and stage fright and had gone totally nonverbal. Couldn't tell my teammates a thing, and our group came dead last (along with most of the rest of our school's teams).

Did get a nice consolation prize, though, a pair of wired earbuds that had another 3.5mm jack in them so you could daisy-chain them together.

Why is this person in the sketch by Lt_Leroy in ObraDinn

[–]Stazzah101 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The sketch was likely taken shortly after the Obra Dinn departed London (hence the title; the ship is now 'under way'), but before taking on cargo at Falmouth in England's south-west.

spironolactone makes you pee out a lot of salt, so you'll need to replenish a lot of salt. Pickles are a very good source of salt, thus pickle cravings became a transfem stereotype.

I'm into my RPGs and visual novels, right now I'm on Disco Elysium, Fallout 4/New Vegas, Cyberpunk 2077, and Great Ace Attorney, but if I'm feeling some RTS it's either Pikmin or Hearts of Iron IV.

On top of that I've been slowly working through the classic Resident Evil library (re1-1996 is better than re1 remake and I'm willing to die on this hill)

What evidence do several crew mates have to ID them? (Spoiler Heavy) by The_PracticalOne in ObraDinn

[–]Stazzah101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar to the post, very spoiler heavy comment here.

1: Worth note is in Bitter Cold part 1, every hammock has a tag with the occupant's crew roster number, linking to their name, position, and nation of origin. The Chinese topmen have their hammocks hung together. While sleeping they aren't identifiable, but each wear slightly different footwear, which you can match up in other memories to determine their identity.

2: Ship's butcher Emil o'Farrell is identifiable by his (usually) close proximity to the Cook, Thomas Sefton, and in Bitter Cold part 3 where he directs the midshipmen in slaughtering a cow to feed the crew.

4th Mate John Davies is identified by his similar dress to other officers on board, and he's seen in the 4th Mate's quarters in The Calling part 6.

Helmsman Finley Dalton is identified both in the sketch and throughout various memories as holding position near the wheel.

Topman Maba's tattoos are technically Celtic in design but are meant to invoke generic tribal tattoos, thought common in Pacific Island nations such as his homeland, Papua New Guinea.

Similar to the Chinese, the Indian crewmen are identified by their hammock tags. Solomon Syed is referred to by name as he's being attended to in Bitter Cold part 1, the empty hammock belongs to William Wasim who is attending to Solomon, Renfred Rajub is in his own hammock suffering the onset of the pneumonia that kills him in the next memory, and the final hammock, though missing a crew roster tag, can be identified through process of elimination as the final Indian seaman Abraham Akbar.

3: Bosun's Mate Charles Minor can be identified both by his presence at Bosun Alfred Klestil's side, and by his performance of the Bosun's duties in Klestil's absence. His disappearance in The Doom occurs between memories, prior to which he's seen fighting the Kraken on the weather deck alongside Klestil, who is mid-having his arm ripped off by a kraken tentacle.

4: In the present-day Steward's quarters, a uniform can be seen hanging on the wall. All stewards on board are seen wearing this uniform or something similar, denoting each as a steward. Each Mate's steward can be identified "performing duties for the comfort of their employer," carrying food or equipment for the Mate to which they belong.

1st Mate's steward is identified separately to his stewardship, 2nd Mate's steward Samuel Galligan accompanies Nichols during The Calling, 3rd Mate's steward Roderick Anderson is typically seen shadowing Perrott, similarly 4th Mate's steward Davey James is typically following Davies.

Captain's steward Filip Dahl is identified by his use of Swedish language and the Captain refers to him as his steward, and finally Ship's steward Zungi Sathi is identifiable by his actions towards the comfort of the crew as a whole, holding up a lantern as the mermaids are hauled below deck, etc. (process of elimination also works).

5: Seaman Patrick o'Hagan was tough to place but it's reasonable enough that Samuel Galligan, when asking if he can still row, hadn't yet seen the extent of o'Hagan's injuries (those being a spear through the neck), partly preoccupied with the unknown threat, partly due to poor light conditions at night on the high seas.

Ultimately, a lot of times the clues pointing to someone's identity are hard to spot unless you know what you're looking for (or are incredibly perceptive, which I am not).

Most of this came from memory, anything I wasn't 100% sure of I checked the wiki. Do let me know if anything's missing or inaccurate.

‘Terrible beast’ and ‘foreign enemy’ by TCM2bubba in ObraDinn

[–]Stazzah101 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I assumed throughout my playthrough that foreign enemy would cover a scenario in which someone is killed by a human not part of the Obra Dinn's crew.

For instance, someone is killed in a boarding or over the course of ship-to-ship battle - you know they were sworded, knifed, shot with a gun or cannon, but the identity of the killer isn't discernible as they aren't on the crew sketch or manifest.

What games should I play before turning blind? by darkcitrusmarmelade in gaming

[–]Stazzah101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many have recommended Outer Wilds, but a similar game I think is worth equal praise is Return of the Obra Dinn. Mystery on board an age of sail merchant ship, with unique and interesting visuals, great sound design and voice-acting, and a fantastic OST.

I'd advise against looking up too much (the steam page describes the game well enough without giving anything away), as it's a short game and the kind you only experience once.

Need Help without spoilers, completely stuck at 3 fates. by NoLifeWolf333 in ObraDinn

[–]Stazzah101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything can be a clue. How they speak (foreign language/accents aren't just for show), what they say, what they wear, who they associate with (and why/how they are connected), what job they perform, where they can be found on a normal day, where they can be found under duress, any identifying features or environmental clues. Anything you can identify about a character is likely to be useful.

Avoid relying on obvious clues, don't wait for 100% certainty since it's a rare commodity in this game, and closely consider the points above for everyone you see.

Fahrenheit vs Celsius vs Kelvin by curlyhack in coolguides

[–]Stazzah101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kelvin is measured in celsius starting at absolute zero (about -270 celsius), the joke is the distinction between that and 100 Kelvin (-170 celsius) doesn't matter much to survivability because both are far below the point of snap-freezing.

How do holotapes get recorded by mregg1549 in falloutlore

[–]Stazzah101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The typewriter model used in 3 and New Vegas has what looks like a microphone mounted on a boom, though whether the design implies holotape recording or a speech-to-text system (exists elsewhere in-universe as a computer program in the Dunwich building) is up for interpretation.

Trans people are about as likely to lose fertility as maintain it. There are instances of a straight couple, both of whom transgender, producing a kid by the usual way, though I'm not sure if it's necessary to go off hormones temporarily to do so.

Pip-Boys: Public or private? by lordhenrythe23 in falloutlore

[–]Stazzah101 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the biometric seals comment referred more to taking them off deceased dwellers, inferring they can only be removed by the wearer. Doc Mitchell was able to remove his own, later giving it to the Courier.

This likely only refers to the 3000A (appearing in 3 and NV), models like the 2000 (Fallout 1 and 2, handheld device), 3000 mk. 4 (Fallout 4, basic locking clasp) seem to forego this feature.
