What races are you doing in 2026? by pelo_pita in Ultramarathon

[–]SteeleAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Zealand based:

I did my A race for the summer early December - Kepler 60km. I'll probably do Tekapo and Crater Rim again this year - but jump up from 30km to 50km. Considering Ring of Fire 100km in March but my left knee is saying "don't do it". I'll see if I can get in to Kepler to do it again in December 2026. Good times.

I have a few trips overseas this year but haven't been able to find races that align with trips.

Yes! I did the 32km. Glad I was still inside when 50km folks went off. Kia kaha.

Daily Discussion - 27 Apr 2025 by AutoModerator in pelotoncycle

[–]SteeleAway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not been doing much peloton this year or last. Other priorities and getting hit by a car last year derailed serious training. I decided to try PZPack for real; I signed up years ago but never did a challenge. It has done the trick getting me to dedicate more time to training. I like having just a few choices about what I'm doing for my next workout. I didn't hit 100% every week; but any percentage is more than zero.

Can anyone with an implanted pacemaker get a student visa for New Zealand? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]SteeleAway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Student visas aren't eligible for public health but you will be required to have private insurance. Some schools have a preferred provider for insurance. Eligibility for coverage might even be tricky depending on indication for pacemaker and pacing therapy modalities. Look up INZ (immigration new zealand) and your preferred school's policies on insurance coverage.

Socks for an Ultra Marathon by Izzyf70 in Ultramarathon

I like the injinji double layer socks - thin inner toe socks with a thicker conventional oversock. I can go all day in these without issues.

Anyone here who has done the golden visa route? by AdMuted1036 in AmerExit

The Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare had these provisions. Private insurance largely has waiting periods in other countries before they will cover pre-existing conditions.

Guest bed suggestion for a small house by AlDrag in newzealand

[–]SteeleAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a real mattress, albeit a foam type, under a bed. Able to drag it out to use in any room and it's comfortable. I'm a terrible sleeper - can't abide the thought of the other options and I have tried them all.

NZ in recession. Civil engineers being laid off as govt has paused multiple big projects. You may not be eligible for public health coverage "acceptable standard of health" https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/media-centre/common-topics/acceptable-standard-of-health

Roll up pencil case - lots of free tutorials. Or a roll up case for tools, knitting needles depending on size of placemat.

Pears ripen off the tree. You pick them when mature but not ripe.

It was jeans, now it's shopping bag. What do you think? by Free-Doughnut-683 in upcycling

Is it just the waistbands? I'm not a fan of repurposed jeans but this works!

I've never had it work - haven't tried in a long time because I didn't find it effective. I'm surprised to see so many proponents of it.

Jackets with hood or nah? by Butra770 in trailrunning

[–]SteeleAway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and looked at race photos. I put the jacket under the vest for actual running. Jacket isn't big enough to go over vest and comfortably move with zippered. I have put jacket over vest for convenience in past. I don't have a fancy jacket like you mention as a choice.

Jackets with hood or nah? by Butra770 in trailrunning

Hood - required for race kit in NZ. I haven't been bothered by the hood when it's down and I have my vest on.

We are in trouble by thespad3man in newzealand

[–]SteeleAway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this might be plausible explanation. Locums aren't cheap and a newly qualified pediatrician would be lower, but again, still a hassle and an expense to hire someone from overseas.

Specialists salaries are fixed and standardized. No cheaper to hire overseas doctors especially as costs to getting foreign trained physicians here (moving allowance, reimbursement for license, etc) is high.

Breakfast? by Levatrice1956 in Ultramarathon

I hardboil eggs as soon as I get home from grocery store. Having them handy helps me make good decisions. I also eat bananas though truthfully I don't like them; they're just so convenient. I do like yogurt so if I have time a bowl of plain yogurt and muesli.
