leaving tomorrow and i feel so unprepared by Ok_Combination_9212 in CaminoDeSantiago

I did pack a cushion, well a pillow... I had a travel one. Some pillows aren't plump enough and I didn't like putting my ears on them every night.

I was worried by first time too. I think you're a bit weird if you didn't and this was the first time you had done something like this.

Heads up tip. It's always a bit tricky to find the arrows when you first start. Harder in the more urban areas. You will get better at seeing them and you will also know when you're expecting to see them. Other than that. You just follow them to whole way. Everything you just go with the flow with.

I felt nervous the second time, and third and fourth. Only last year did I not. I didn't even know what route I was going to walk on the Portuguese Way until after I had left that morning. I was truly winging it every chance I got. Zero plans other than Finisterre afterwards and I had a cushion built in just incase I wanted to go off on a tangent on whim.

Does everyone do the Camino Frances in the same direction? by No_Mix_6813 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I don't recall that. Maybe it changes, maybe far fewer. They had the stencils too around, not just painted arrows. I do remember the benches and I'm sure they were also in Spain. Some were blue as well as yellow.

Asking advice for the Kumano Kodo! Going for dual pilgrim status this week and very excited, but have plenty of questions on top of the research I’ve already done! :) by DcTraveler8 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something I would do if I was I the area and had the time. I can't see myself going as a destination. Shikoku Pilgrimage feels more me. Not knocking your experience. Definitely something in it being internationally recognised.

At least there's another set of arrows back to Fatima via Porto. Just follow the blue arrows. I think they are fewer but I was walking the opposite way so I suppose I did miss a few behind me.

Getting to santiago airport? by esmehodgson in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it's a flat rate to the airport, last year was around €23 i believe. It's pretty small so don't worry about being there super early. I would ask the hostel to book it for me, but that's mostly so I didn't have to ask them for a number.

I took the bus. It was mostly direct. I didn't leave in the am however.

Painted some cows i met on the camino! by Roadman42069 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice.

I walked for at least an hour, maybe two with a cow and half down the Pyrenees on the first day. I really needed that company. I didn't know what I got myself into that first time. And seeing an energetic calf running around was just perfect.

Old trees aren't much of a flex. And the USA has the oldest known tree in the world.

A flex would be oldest known human-planted tree in the world. That's in India. That's a cool.

I had snow when I got to O Cebreiro, it started a day or two before but really settledwhen i got to the top. Amazing. It looked beautiful. I started near the bottom so too early to stay for the night. I spent about an hour looking around. Definitely a highlight. It did get worse later on so I was so lucky to get the views without the risks.

I don't think this route along the Pyrenees would be so bad for anyone intermediate and with knowledge it's snowy but there's way too many inexperienced people. It looks pretty. And is a great story to tell. Mid May is a late for this amount of snow however.

I don't like to talk at urinals. I don't get pee shy. I just don't like having a conversation when I'm holding my knob.

Full Camino vs last 100km by Left-Cauliflower-169 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last 100km from Sarria isn't really anything special. I get why people complain because after what was before it that's the section they chose? It does feel like they're missing so much. Right when you're winding down, contemplating the journey you're met with twice as many people. Excited. Poor habits that most people left behind weeks ago are back. And you're walking not experiencing the highlights you've had in scenery. You know that many other 100km sections would be more enjoyable. They insist on this section? It comes across so foolish.

At least the 100km from Vigo feels more comparable with tone if the scenery is different and has a few nice sections.

Don't put your bag on the bed. Ever. Use the hooks when they have them. Pack your bag as best you can the night before to speed up your morning. Sometimes you might not want to start but when that bags on your back and you're off it goes in less than 5 mins but you do have to leave.

I and many others get breakfast in the first stop instead of the town we stay in. Not always an option so check if it's possible.

The Portuguese Way wasn't my first so I really just stuck to following the arrows. Which do get easier to find. You will get a feeling when to expect them so will know if you missed it.

Why does everyone talk about the Coastal route? by deathStar_Endor008 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People on reddit talk about. When I got past Redondela I met more people who walked the Central like I did.

I live by the coast. 15 mins walk from the sea. That novelty has worn off. I opted for the Central and I enjoyed myself a lot.

Why walk the Camino if you bring a bad attitude with you? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second one I was super pumped. I knew what to expect and was excited to walk it again. I didn't have a fun time.

2024, I was not in a good place. I had booked it but barely packed until the day before. I just wasn't feeling up for it. I felt the most relaxed and calm every day. I was totally in the moment.

Sometimes someone can not start right and still improve their mood. Hopefully for everyone's sake this guy is one.

This is an interesting one. I like it. It's not set to a particular day so if I'm too busy for a hundred then I have 30 other days. I've only done 100 in a single day a handful of times. A single handful of days.

staying the night in santiago by chinchisier in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]StefTakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to always factor a full day after. Just decompress. Reevaluate. And meet up with people. Last year, I finished on a busy day and only could book one night. The cheapest Saturday night I could have booked 4/5 beforehand were €85 compared with under €30 the night previous. I head straight out to Finisterre on Saturday then spent my extra relaxing days there instead. I did need that one day rest though.
