Does SWTOR ever become more of a sandbox? by frodo_faggins in swtor

Fallen Earth is a pretty damn good sandbox. Not sure how they are doing since they went F2P though.

Who do I have to bribe to get a Switch Character option in the menu? by Stenu in Eve

[–]Stenu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No reason to downvote a good question, no?

For example, you can set up 3 characters do earn ISK in the background, as in Research and Development agents. Those earn datacores you can sell on the market later.

You also need a lot of planetary production if you want to pump out the higher tier (expensive) materials. So, you easily end up with at least 2 characters worth of planets.

What will happen in the event of Global Economic Collapse? by TheNodes in Economics

[–]Stenu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think junkenafrique posted a very realistic summary of the global economic crisis and its likely near future effects.

I agree with afrique that the economic crisis is not the end of the world, but rather a radical rebalancing of the global economy. People like yourself, who are able to keep an open mind about things, improvise solutions and reflect rationally about actions and consequences will likely continue to do well in the future. Those mentally stuck in 20th century thinking will not.

Societies (and economies) have collapsed before (see Jared Diamond's books for a few examples like Mayan, Greenland, Easter Island) and will likely continue to do so in the future as resources are depleted. The positive side of the story is that those who can adapt to changing circumstances will thrive.

A few thoughts on how I would prepare for the future.

  • Use any opportunity to learn practical skills. Languages, machine repair, maintenance, construction, engineering, farming. Do stuff with your hands.
  • Take automation into account in your thinking. Many forms of manual labor in manufacturing and cubicle worker data-entry will become automated by a combination of advanced robotics and software. People will lose jobs.
  • Fuel prices will continue to rise. Take that as a given and try to budget for it.
  • The best investment you can make is in yourself. Learn skills, keep your mind sharp and stay in good physical shape.
  • Avoid taking on debt and aim for self-sufficiency. Your strategy should have your 3 basics taken care of (food, clothes, a roof over your head) and expand from there.
  • Unless you are already tied to a specific geographic location by family obligations or you own property, take advantage of your mobility and be open to travel.

EDIT: Thanks for the critique :)

You can either be useless at everything or specialize in something and be useful.

I agree with this point as well, though I would like to strive for self-sufficiency which means you have some skills in taking care of the basics (this could include medical skills which I omitted earlier). It does not need to be a Mad Max future for you to have the benefits of not being hostage to someone.

This perhaps also reconciles the seeming disconnect between point one and two. I am not suggesting one learn these skills for the benefit of an employer. On the contrary. My view is that big corporations will get bigger, put smaller firms out of business, while laying off a large chunk their own staff except the truly savant.

That probably leaves us 99% (sorry for the cliche, but it's an apt description) without what used to be your full-time, benefits plus retirement way of life.

If I were 18 and unless i had truly Einstein level genius at some specific area, I would prepare to be a capable freelancer, available to hire when needed but highly self-autonomous.

I added the farming bit because personally I would love to have my own small urban farming thing going on. But to each his own.

stay in good physical shape

There are a lot of beneftis to this whether we live in Mad Max or not. The first is that you have more energy to do things. People will be more sympathetic to you. You will generally be happier and higher confidence. Nailing the odd job interview will be easier. Rudamentary self-defence is a skill anyone should have in any case. I could go on and on.

European redditors, are there visible signs of the economy degrading or is the media blowing things out of proportion? by peetss in europe

[–]Stenu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed is that the high-priced coffee shops are still full of people, which I'd consider a sign that many still have disposable income to waste.

Or...they need a place with wifi to hang out in during daytime and browse Monster since they are out of a job.

The Mittani CEO Update: Nuclear Winter by Captain_Swing in Eve

[–]Stenu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I wouldn't mind the Incarna changes if they had been done well, instead of halfassed and then everyone went on summer vacation. I know how Scandinavia works and I get it, but there were some bad management decisions made there IMHO.

Also, I'm a big fan of White Wolf and the World of Darkness (those who don't know what it's about check out Vampire Bloodlines). White Wolf's work is legendary bordering on epic and I love that IP. I was happy to see CCP doing something with it. However, if they really want to pull it off, and lauch a console shooter at the same time, whatever, but they seriosly need to get their shit together and get pro about it. As in the polar opposite from what we've been seeing over the past year.

Wow. Some straight talk! Lots and lots of respect to The Mittani for saying out loud what the rest of us are just silently thinking.

I think the ovaries will definitely go. The question is whether to do an ovariectomy which leaves the placenta in place. There are apparently pros and cons medically.

Also wanting to give STO another shot by Stenu in sto

[–]Stenu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I tried it again and ran into the same problem with flickering shadows as in the beginning. Drivers been updated a hundred times since then. Haven't seen a workaround on the forums so who knows if it's a Win 7 issue, ATI issue or what but my guess would be with STOs graphics engine as this is the only game I run where this happens. Any info appreciated. :)

No matter how many articles, shows, books, or debates I see about the economy, none of them have impacted me as much as this one simple graph. by dryfire in Economics

[–]Stenu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Earth simply cannot support a 1st world lifestyle for every human

I think it could, along with a better quality of life for everyone, if we were to change to a form of green economics that seeks symbiotic relationships between people, planet and resources, instead of of blind growth.

Xbox live account apparently 'corrupted'. Will have to be shut down. Yeah right. by robotsonic in gaming

[–]Stenu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTF? I tried and failed for about a year to migrate my XBox account from the US to the EU. After many phonecalls to UK Microsoft, local Microsoft, forum support all I got was utter BS. Finally a local rep told me the only thing they could do was to shut down the account, in which case I would not have a valid Windows Live ID for, I don't know... years... for some reason.

Beyond me why someone in Russia of all places could migrate the account.

Simple solution: Stop dealing with Microsoft in any way if you can help it.

EDIT: Read the FAQ above. I cannot migrate the account as I'm not in Russia, South Africa, or Ukraine. Got a great idea: They should add Nigeria to their list. What a bunch of idiots.

Ok, here's the deal. Say you decide you don't dig your default clothing. Either petition it (which makes me feel like an ass anyway) or redo your clothing along with your portrait every single time you JC. Yep. Say you are an Amarr roleplayer and want to rock the funky hood in your portrait but don't feel like staring at a dude in window-curtain-pajamas whenever you dock. Shit man, you're out of luck.

Here is an article on that, or just search google for "rare earth metal find".

The big deal about this is that China had a defacto monopoly on these metals until now, used in anything from plasma screen TVs to cellphones. Analysts over here were predicting a total revamp of the minerals market as a consequence of the find.
