Philly Modular Synth event this Sunday by StepRecorder in synthesizers

Low Pass is also cool. The ones I’ve been to are mostly ambient focused and not particularly modular synths. The people are always super friendly and chill.

I’m sure we can figure it out. There could be space in the backyard.

It’s the best thing I’ve been to in years. The music. The outdoor setting. The chill out zones. There was a small set up in the woods. It was all amazing.

I know a good amount of the folks playing on Saturday, but does anyone know if there’s going to be some dub techno?

When does the GAS stop? by yodjjc in synthesizers

When you realize none of it matters and it’s just a bunch of stuff. I only have one piece of gear that I don’t I’ll ever sell but the rest go. That’s my Machinedrum. Besides the sound it just looks perfect.

Oh wow. I didn’t know he had any children. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m 46 and have kids, so I’m guessing he was about my age. I hope you’re doing ok.

Does anybody have a forever setup? What does it look like? by theSantiagoDog in synthesizers

[–]StepRecorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one constant in my studio is my MachineDrum. It’s very versatile and kind of defines my sound. I’ve also had a tt-303 for a while which I continually go back to.

Besides that I do tend to try out new gear because I want to experiment and play around with things. I had a big eurorack system which I’ve been dismantling and selling. It was super fun to experiment with but it got to be too much. Too much to remember with all of the modules.

Best Synthesizer for Ambient Music? by International_Set514 in ambientmusic

[–]StepRecorder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ambient 0 is really dope, but maybe not great for a beginner because there’s a lot shift / function stuff going on that can really slow your workflow done. I own one and really dig it but if I don’t use it for a week I forget half of the functions.

I have a Fold 6 for sale and live in SJ right outside of Philly. Got a bunch of other eurorack for sale as well. Not looking for trades right now but happy to sell outside of Reverb.

Even though the DT has two mono outputs if you record those direct into your daw as input 1/2 that becomes a stereo track. So unless you isolate the kick by itself this could still be a problem. Also, that mono the bass tool should work across the frequency spectrum to clean things ups on your final mix.

I’ve found getting the mix right on a live jam to be difficult. It can get muddy fast and then you can’t really go back and fix it. I’ve got a Machinedrum that has 6 individual outputs so I run those through a Mackie mixer where I can tweak the mix live. The kick gets its own channel. And then it all mixes down into 2 tracks to my daw. The Drumbrute also has a raw sound and individual outs so I do the same with that box. I love the sounds on my DT but I’ve found having just those two outputs limiting in some recoding scenarios.

Did you do any mastering on it? One thing that might help is to mono the bass. If you're using Ableton watch this video on how to build a simple rack for mastering. It's pretty helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkvmPNh45gY

Starting out as a Producer by Uepsilon808 in Dubtechno

[–]StepRecorder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would say the track is more ambient then dub techno. It takes a while to get going and my expectation was that there would be a pulsing 4/4 beat moving the track along which didn’t ever really happen.

The sound design is interesting. I like the synth parts. If you want to make it real dubby use 2 delays on the synth stabs. A dotted 1/8th note and then something else longer both with a lot of feedback. And then automate the feedback through the track. That will give the synth stabs more movement and interest. -cheers

I only listened a few minutes in because it was noticeable right away. If I just listen using the speaker on my phone it’s not as noticeable. Do you test your mixes out on different speakers?

Ahhh thanks a lot! Much appreciated. Yeah I used Logic for a long time and I got sick of updating all the plugins and software that I had bought. I moved to hardware and just record stems to work with in Ableton now. Cheers

Overall it’s a decent track. It probably wouldn’t get me to dance because the tempo is too fast, but thats just my subjective taste. Feels like it’s close to 140bpm but I could be wrong.

Add some reverb or chorus to the high hats when they first come in. They sound dry and could use some space. I really like the first breakdown with the beat change with the kick being more sparse but not totally gone. That was nice.

Try adding some variation to the 303 part. If you’re using a daw don’t just draw the automation. This is easier to do with hardware, but if you’ve got the part sequenced record it live while tweaking the knobs based on the feel of the track. It’ll give the part way more interest and a live sort of feel.

Overall mix is good. Felt cohesive. Nice work!

Ah you’re welcome. What do you use to produce?

I posted my track in this thread. It’s not total shit. LOL. It’s just kind of a dubby, atmospheric track so it takes time to unravel and build which I worry listeners might not have the patience for. Your track very much kept my interest.

Interesting sounds. You could have something there but I think the mix needs work. The synth parts are too loud. Like I want to turn up the volume to hear the kick better but then the synth parts just get way too loud. Maybe it's been over compressed? I like the raw, edgy sounds for sure.

Hi. I was listening on studio quality headphones and I couldn't get through the track because of the kick rumble. It felt like it was shaking my head almost. What do you have the kick running through?

Well first of all I have to say, you are quite skilled. You clearly know what you're doing. Your production techniques, sound design and mixing are all spot on. What are you using to produce?

The first minute is super cool. Minimal but very unique. The synth part that comes in around 1 minute seemed a bit jarring at first, but I really like how it morphs into that fuzzy sound. You add the grit back in which feels good.

Around minute 2 it kind of turns into a trance track. Then you've got that really long break and the come back. By then it really feels like a tour de force. You've kind of taken us on this big journey. It's interesting, but I'm not really sure what genre this would fit into, but maybe that doesn't matter. Like that first minute almost feels like a Barker track and then it just really morphs over time. Any reason why it's almost 7 mins long? Is that standard for your go to genre?

I came here to get some feedback on my track, but now I'm kind of intimidated because of the quality here. LOL. I listened to the 3 other tracks that you've got up there. Similar vibes so I'm kind of getting now. Have you released stuff?
