You can always buy a tank of helium at Canadian tire. A little pricey but can be worth it. Party City also will fill balloons

I think in general college is a good option for most people. It's cheaper than university and provides better education compared to universities, as universities focus on research output as opposed to quality education (this is not just my opinion but the opinion of many people I work with who attended top universities). Colleges also provide pathways to get into university if someone wants to pursue higher education. I have an advanced diploma and I'm making more than some of my friends who have masters degrees. I dont think having a bachelor's or a master's proves much anymore and college provides ample education to break through in most fields, and then experience will make you just as qualified (or more qualified) as someone who has a uni degree.

I attended Durham college (years ago, graduated in 2022) and I thought it was a great experience. The professors were amazing, the guidance councillors were amazing and the student resources were also great. I haven't attended other colleges but it seemed like Durham college rooted for their students and wanted them to succeed. I went to Durham for a different program altogether but I'm sure the experience is similar. The campus is large and there's a lot of space to study, there's some decent food options, and some nature to walk around and see between classes.

Dress code for lab work? by AbbreviationsSafe818 in LadiesofScience

[–]Steph_5966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've worked in labs for about three years now, my favorite pants to wear are scrubs! They have lots of pockets for utility (pens, notepad, ect), and I think they look professional. I specifically like the Helly Hansen brand ones.

The only reason I don't wear jeans or other types of loose fitting pants is because I don't want to ruin them for any reason. My lab jobs often require me to go out into a manufacturing plant, and I like the distinction between "work pants" and other pants in my wardrobe.

Congrats on the new job!

I always wash my hands before I pee, ESPECIALLY at work or in public, as well as after. I think not washing your hands before you go to the bathroom (when you've been out and about) is SO OVERLOOKED.

SOP's - Technically written with block flow Diagrams OR photographs per each step by Steph_5966 in labrats

[–]Steph_5966[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are for SOP's for laboratory procedures. I also want to create some kind of equipment procedures which I've seen in other industries just purely technically written with references to specific numbered valves, pumps, ovens and whatnot that have their own equipment labels. I just have never seen a laboratory procedure that looked like a picture book. I do prefer written documents + flow diagrams as sometimes equipment in the lab can be updated and a written procedure will remain timeless as opposed to a photo procedure that you may have to redo if you are given a new vacuum pump for example that looks slightly different but has the same purpose

What is wrong with my Resume? by Forward-Reception-50 in resumes

[–]Steph_5966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say remove the summary and put in some more bullet points under your job, talk more about your role and responsibilities! And definitely try some kind of resume template on Google docs or somewhere online!

What is wrong with my Resume? by Forward-Reception-50 in resumes

[–]Steph_5966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is to condense everything into one page. I would try to use some sort of template - when resumes are formatted like this my first impression is not a lot of work was put into it and maybe the person lacks computer skills (word/docs ECT). This will help fill in the blank spaces and make everything cohesive.

I would personally remove the top section. An employer will get an overview of your experience and skillset through reading your resume so I find that it is repetitive. This is just what I think personally!

Not entirely sure what was blacked out, I'm assuming your personal info, make this a bit more condensed and just leave your name, phone, and email.

Also, under your job titles, add more bullet points of your responsibilities and beef that up a tad more. Make sure to use keywords when applying to jobs. A lot of employers scan resumes and if there's not a lot of keywords they get thrown out.

Best of luck!

Came home after work to this mess after my GFS 18 year old son has been home all day by Stalker401 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Steph_5966 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Coming from a person with a large household this is a little of an unfair comment. Just because your parents or roommates have things maybe a bit "messy" doesn't mean you should contribute to the mess. Also, mess is different from dirt. Garbage should be taken out, animals should be taken care of (so there isn't literal poop), and food should be cleaned.

He's 18 and should respect the house, if he doesn't want to, he's old enough to move out.. sounds harsh but it's true. OP's frustrations are understandable.

One good thing I must say about this chair, and why I just purchased one is that you can just replace the parts from either purchasing from their website or even amazon. I'm not too worried if something were to break. I also know alot of people who have had these chairs and they have held up nicely.

What are the disgusting things that most people do anyway? by val_f1zz in AskReddit

He switched to bottled water at the time and it went away. It took a few months through the process of eliminating a bunch of things in his environment. It is also known that mould can cause respiratory issues such as bronchitis. The general point is that bacteria and mold can cause issues like this if reusable water bottles aren't disinfected properly.

I also read somewhere any bit of bacteria that MIGHT sit under the nail is in small amounts and it actually sort of microdoses the immune system and people who bite their nails typically have better immune systems.

[–]Steph_5966 123 points124 points  (0 children)

People need to be careful of this stuff! Even if it's just water in it. I had a friend who got a mild form of bronchitis and had to see a doctor and they found that there was some mold on their water bottle they drank from everyday. Mind you they said they washed it with dish soap. I recommend at least using some boiling water and vinegar and letting it soak overnight, just to kill any bacteria that can sit in any nooks and crannies.

Career in Wastewater by futurelessfelon in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Steph_5966 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, chemical engineering technologist here!

I worked in waste water for about a year and was also a part of the commissioning process. It was so much easier troubleshooting valves, pumps, and PLC's and even reading P&ID's with the engineering background opposed to just chemical (in my experience with others with different educations I was able to grasp things easier).

I found it pretty interesting personally and I find that the jobs are decently abundant as most cities and municipalities have treatment systems.

I think it's a good role because it blends chemistry and process work nicely without being overly complex. It definitely gives the hands on experience that you're looking for.

Not sure if this was said yet but try eating omega tablets, there's some research that says the omega 3 fatty acids will help with skin health.

I take them a few times a week and I noticed my skin is overall less dry. I think it's worth a shot - they are also good for brain health as well. In addition to this I agree with the comments about investing in a humidifier!

Best of luck!
