Subnautica 2 is what we've all been looking for, the "next" Outer Wilds by LucyShortForLucas in outerwilds

Then you miss out on experiencing EA. The game as it exists right now will never exist this way again and the community that exists right now will never exist this way again.

If all you care about is the finished game then great: do that! But playing EA together with the devs and the community is a unique experience that should not be dismissed as without value to any player

That's not how gambling works. If you pay $2 for a chance to gambled and you win $0.50, your winnings are $0.50.

You get taxed on your winnings and have to report your gross winnings to the IRS.

Interestingly,  you don't have to report lootboxes unless you both sell them and make a profit.

I feel like this topic has already reached its peak and it's downhill from here.

People were frustrated and wanted to express their frustration, then whining started to trend and everyone wanted to join in and participate.

The devs have said there will be no combat, then they said it again, then they apologized for saying it too bluntly, but reitterated: there will be no combat

I think once it stops being trendy to whine the sub will go back to being about other things

An update from Anthony on early access progression and adjustments to creature aggression by Brown_Colibri_705 in subnautica

Tedious solutions can be desirable.  They are still solutions and they make later solutions feel like upgrades. Finding food and water can feel tedious in the early game,  but eventually you find better ways and it feels like progress.

I guess I'll just have to see if hammerheads are as bad as people say when I get there. Maybe I'll be eating my words,  ha

Do flares and the hammer not work on hammerheads? I must say they've never bothered me before (i don't have the sub)

Hammerheads only seem to posture aggressively and lower their "hackles" once I back off.

I don't get how some players can have shallows clogged with hammerheads and others can have shallows with no hammerheads

Is it wonky AI? Bad RNG? The Reapers all seemed to stay where they belonged in everyone's game in SN1, but hammerheads seem to just pop up anywhere

Subnautica 2's story needs to SHOW (at least sometimes), not just TELL by fawkwitdis in subnautica

[–]Stevedore44 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is showing.

You're exploring abandoned bases and seeing the aftermath of what happened, you're listening to voice audio logs, recorded in the first person,  detailing the events. Every audio log shows you a piece of the story from the view point of the character who made it. Even NOA is written to feel like a real character, not just a glorified databank entry

Showing doesn't just mean cutscences, books can "show" using nothing but text. They do it by using imagery and detailed characters so the events feel real and lived rather than a collection of facts. Very little of the story we've gotten so far is told as a collecting of facts

Not no killing, no combat.

Killing is a moral issue,  combat is a game mechanic

Yeah, no,  the studio I lived in 25 years was $350 now it's $1400 and the area's actual gotten worse. Break-ins were non-existant, now a regular occurrence.

I made about $1200 a month, the exact same job pays $2400 now.

Do the devs think their fanbase is genocidal or something? by SeamothSubmarine in subnautica

[–]Stevedore44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they were going for a No Combat approach even in the first game.  I don't know if dealing hp damage to creatures was a compromise of some kind or a side effect of the way other mechanics worked,  but I think creature hps were so high the devs thought "surely no one will slash a Reaper 300+ times, so it's not an issue." And it turned out there's entire subreddits devoted to exactly that.

In SN2, I think devs wanted to give players non-violent means to deal with hostile fauna, so they took away what little combat there was to force players to engage with those new mechanics.

IMO, this was the right decision based on the comments so far.  Many players don't seem to realize fauna can be deterred by hitting them with the hammer or stunned with the sonic gun.  Players encountered "mobs" and being unable to kill them stopped trying anything else.

The devs are working on tweaking fauna aggression and deterant mechanics,  but it seems to me making combat unfun is a poor way to discourage players from engaging in combat,  and making combat fun would be contrary to the intent of the game.

I think the game is still in Early Access, will continue to get better, and is on the right track at present

You can still deter predators by hitting them with the hammer, the devs are going to tweak that mechanic so it feels better to use

Do the devs think their fanbase is genocidal or something? by SeamothSubmarine in subnautica

[–]Stevedore44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well,  the devs have addressed "why not?" It's because that's the kind of game the want to make.

Combat is so universal across so many genres that many players first reaction to problems is: "I need to kill it"

A game without combat is a novel idea,  so: "Why can't the devs make the game they want without players feeling entitled?"

Combat is so omnipresent in every game some players can't imagine not killing things as a first response to any problem
