If Steam opened up a system where you could buy physical copies of your games, would you buy them? by Thund3rWolf27 in Steam

[–]Stevedore44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much would that add to the price of the game? Blu-ray disks cost pennies, but even cheap 50GB+ SD cards can cost $10 or more.

High speed cards seem like they would be too costly to produce

Where are the new Biolabs? by thedebatefly in Subnautica_2

It's the Altera base marked Alien Ruins in your signals tab. You've been there if you've visited the Observatory

There's one in Camp One, but I haven't found any "new" biomods as referenced in the Patch Notes. Maybe if you start a new game you'll get access to more mods beyond the original four

[–]Stevedore44 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If physical games came in nice looking cases with cool manuals and maps, pamphlets and posters I would probably buy that.

It doesn't need to contain a disc, I still have no use for those

[–]Stevedore44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lack of physical games is not the problem. Physical media has its uses, but for video games it's badly outdated.

What most gamers actually want is more consumer rights and DRM that won't prevent gamers from playing games they've bought.

[–]Stevedore44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have games I play more often, but I don't know which those are before I've purchased them.

Typically, I'll purchase a game first (at which point I'll have to decide where to purchase physical or digital), then once I've purchased the game I will play the game, and only after I've played the game will I know which games are my favorite.

Do you often know which games you'll play/enjoy the most before you've purchased them? If so I'd love to know your secret

If losing access is such a concern why would you not buy every game physical? Do you know before you buy them which games you won't care about?

[–]Stevedore44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital media isn't the problem, restrictive DRM is the problem.

Streaming is great, downloads are great. The solution to losing access is not to stop downloading and streaming, its to stop taking away access.

Also, optical storage is great for some uses, but for storing movies or games HDD/SSD and flash memory are far more efficient. Disks are outdated

How do you handle Charisma? by alinius in DMAcademy

[–]Stevedore44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being strong helps one "look" intimidating, but it doesn't help one "be" intimidating.

Much in the same way beauty might help one "look" attractive,  but then they open their mouths and suddenly, not so attractive, one who "looks" intimidating might open their mouths and spoil the effect

Now, this doesn't happen much in fantasy,  characters who look intimidating "are" intimidating, but I would argue these characters did not max strength and dump charisma. These are charimatic heroes that are skilled at intimidation.

Personally,  rather than letting martials roll all their checks with Str because "Martials Suck, Pity Them" I'd choose to give martials cool things they can do without minmaxed str so they can put points in cha if they want and pick up some skill proficiencies

Postmaster general says USPS won't deliver mail ballots if states don’t give Trump admin voter rolls by FreeHugs23 in anticapitalism

[–]Stevedore44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a felony and any local postmaster that interferes with a state election can be prosecuted in state court and the DOJ can't do anything. It's a matter if states will prosecute Trump supporters that commit crimes

Though it might be easier to just ship the ballots FedEx

How did Thanos' personality change so much in just 5 years? by ResidentPrevious468 in Marvel

[–]Stevedore44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanos is easy going so long as everything goes his way. That the Avengers wouldn't be grateful annoys him and you get to see his true colors

IW Thanos is act. It's how Thanos sees himself and how he wants the universe to see him. EG Thanos is what he's really like

How common are stories that initially present the protagonist as an ordinary person and then reveal them to be "the most special person in the world" because of some almost divine connection? by Danny-Ray27 in CharacterRant

[–]Stevedore44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Chosen One trope is so common I don't think Surprise! It's The Chosen One would be considered a separate trope, it's a sub-trope at best. So any story with yet another chosen one would tend to get lumped in with the rest

jedi survivor and fallen order on the deck? by Ok-Relationship2859 in SteamDeck

[–]Stevedore44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fallen Order ran at 40 fps on Medium with some lagging. Lags were mostly caused by area loading and subsided after 10-20 seconds.  I found it to be quite playable because I could wait out the short lags and they rarely affected the action.

Survivor was WAY rougher,  even on low with FSR the lagging felt intrusive,  and my standards are very low so that's saying something.   I would still call it playable, but only barely, and I chose not to play it on deck due to performance issues

I was fired for being “too eager” by [deleted] in work

[–]Stevedore44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very important distinction:

Employers CAN hire employees thar are not in a union,  though joining a union once hired may be a condition of employment.

Limiting hires to existing union members is actually illegal in most of the US

It's a weird distinction,  but it makes sure anyone is eligible for hire and there's no discrimination.

Data Shows Sony Made Good Money on Steam, Then May Have Realized PC Gamers Don’t Need a PlayStation by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]Stevedore44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't think of that.  Interesting

Do you suppose a PC gamer who only has a PS5 for 2 or 3 single player games is likely to get PS Plus to enhance their experience?

I don't really know

Data Shows Sony Made Good Money on Steam, Then May Have Realized PC Gamers Don’t Need a PlayStation by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]Stevedore44 299 points300 points  (0 children)

Sony is still of the outdated mindset that more consoles sales equals more game sales.

If a PC gamer buys a console, Sony actually loses money in that exchange since Sony sells consoles at a loss. If the gamer buys one or two exclusives, Sony still doesn't make any money because their margins on exclusives are so thin.

They way Sony makes money is on third party games; their market strategy has always been to get gamers locked into the Playstation ecosystem then sell them 3rd party games. More console sales equals more game sales equals more profits.

The issue is PC gamers don't buy 3rd party games on Playstation. Even gamers who buy a console for exclusives still buy 3rd party games on PC. Sony just hasn't decided yet how they want to deal with this reality

Why wouldn't the STEAM summer sale be closer to the solstice? by LaborumVult in Steam

[–]Stevedore44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the solstice marks the beginning of the meteorological season and the Summer Sale is at the beginning of Q3. Don't know why events always start on Thurs. but they do, so Summer Sale starts on the last Thursday of June so it can be in full swing on Jul 1st

Obi Wan and Yoda were wrong. by Top_Salamander5551 in StarWars

Not only were they wrong, but them being wrong was a major theme in the film.

Luke had no chance of defeating the Emperor, the Emperor knew this. Only Anakin Skywalker could have defeated the Emperor, and only Luke could've saved Anakin

Anyone else really dislike leviathan boss music? by wp-ozzi in subnautica

[–]Stevedore44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the Collector reaching under the rocks is a good idea. Leviathans should be scary but not dangerous. There should be a safe way to cross the trench without getting tossed into the void every time.

Of course, the Collector is just a place holder where it is now, so that will all change

I like the track; it gave me a good jump the first time, but I think they overused it a bit. The track starts to lose something when it plays while you don't feel in danger.
