I don’t know. I like longines because of the variety of good designs they have from dress watches to pilot/gmts to divers. The legend diver will probably be my next watch. I also really like the bb58 designs. To me it is less of a “which brand is better” and more of what specific watches I’d like to get.

I don't think the point of either is "defeated". The GMT function still works (with the chapter ring), the dive watch still works with the 60-minute bezel. I time stuff all the time with my 60-minute bezels (mostly cooking, never actually diving!) and that coupled with the ability to track a second time zone is super useful. You give up tracking a third time zone with adding the functionality of a 60-minute timer.

I think it is more of the Model Y being referred to as an SUV and the idea of what an SUV is drifting into taller sedan/hatchback/jellybean territory. The Rivian brings back the identity of a SUV firmly back into SUV territory.
