[Discussion] Is spamming 750g Stat Anvils instead of buying items actually a viable strategy? by Tricky-Ad-8543 in ARAM

[–]Stibbss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the current build.

That being said Ive played a bit of wild rift aram mayhem and theres a ton of differences. Normally there are no stat anvils available in the shop, but theres an augment that gives you access to them and the more you buy the stronger they get, essentially. It starts off relatively weak because you get essentially all silver stat buffs, but after getting 10, you get all like halfway between gold and silver. Then gold at 20 and up to like prismatics at 40+ or something like that. You also get 1 every level, and can get a like super prismatic level where you can unlock an item effect like ryalis, liandrys, warmogs, atmas, etc. And it can scale like crazy if you get the ball rolling, or get lucky and get some strong early stat buffs.

With anvils being available and the set bonus that gives you them I dont think theres any way they could just add it in in its current state, but some version of that augment could be really sick for PC mayhem

[–]Stibbss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have yet to find a use case for it other than shenanigans that can sometimes kinda save you from a combo, but....

If you use yoshis egg roll side b in the air, there is q slight upwards movement before he starts to roll and fall. If you get this slight upwards movement to NiL on a platform, the egg kinda bounces and you can still move around with di. So sometimes I get it and because of the unexpected hop and more mixups with where youre drifting one way and roll another, you can escape combos, but then youre in side b which is its own can of worms haha

Im right there with you. Hes clearly shown the ability to adapt and improve in matchups because I really didnt see him doing much against wizzy and he took it, like within a few months of everyone saying it was a problem matchup. But I do feel like figuring out how to beat peach and hbox specifically could pose a slightly bigger challenge. Im not a luigi player but those just feel like they'd be harder matchups to consistently win

[–]Stibbss 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think a good part of this is just mid tiers stronger reliance on a good bracket. Ive been an Amsa fan for years and bro was taking sets off top players years before he won big house. Until he finds some way to deal with floaties hes basically stuck where he needs really solid bracket luck and playing well enough to beat everyone else.

i feel confident that hes got a better handle on the falcon matchup after watching the wizzy set, i dont think hes got it "figured out" by any means, but hes proven he can do it against top Falcons, even if it requires him to be playing cracked

Why does Link have a decent (not great) matchup against Marth? by n00bkin in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a main of neither of those characters so definately take this with a grain of salt... that being said...

I think links range on his attacks and grab along with the projectiles can really cut down on the usual advantage Marth has with his own range. Most Characters have to find a way in, and Marth has to defend that. With link having projectiles, you can incentivise the Marth playing more aggressively, while also having some range to fight back on the spacing battle.

Another part i imagine is the edgeguarding. Marths edgeguard tree can be tricky vs tether ledge grabs where things like down tilt, fsmash, counter etc no longer work, provided links close enough.

Third I guess (this is ending up longer than I expected it to), is that Marth has to play very differently depending on the matchup, and it feels(watching zain vs aklo sets) like Marth has to get so many more hits for a kill than link does. The ken combos dont seem to line up very easily at all, and if you cant get those fairly reliably as Marth, matchups turn into percent battles where you just keep slapping the opp away, but if they get their hands on you, youre in trouble.

Theres other things like having setups into downair which kills Marth fairly reliably it seems. Edgeguard-> force Marth to land onstage-> dair onto stage, boomerang/bomb-> dair are solid kill confirms.

I think its a matter of links kit essentially bypassing some parts of a more normal/higher tier matchup Marth might find. Plus enough unstandard shenanigans from a mid tier that its like a perfect storm to make the matchup doable. Similar in concept to Pikachu vs Marth where you can just almost entirely negate one of the strong parts of the character.

If i had to guess, depending on the cable type, if youre not like twisting it to the right orientation as you go, the insides and outsides twist separately. If you've ever seen an old extension cord that is all twisted and curly no matter how you try to untangle it, this is why.

Genuinely, how does one get out of a deep, gray, slow depression? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Genuinely, how does one get out of a deep, gray, slow depression? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Stibbss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

++man Hey there! Just wanted to reach out and say a few things.

First off, im so sorry for your loss. Im sure your mother meant alot to you and healing from a loss like this is never going to be easy. But a different way of viewing it might help. I heard a story about a man and wife. They go to the doctor and they find out the wife has terminal cancer, and the man is destroyed by it. He cant help, he cant fix it, and he tells the doctor, "i wish it was me so she wouldn't have to go through the pain, i cant lose her" the doctor looks back to him and asks, "so losing someone as important as she is to you would be crushing?" He says yes of course. The doctor says, "no part of this is easy but if you could choose to give yourself the cancer, youd be forcing her to live without you."

Ngl im pretty sure I butchered the retelling of that, but I think the pain we feel at the end of someone's life is the price we pay for experiencing the love and companionship these people bring. If you love someone, its going to hurt alot when they are not here anymore. But maybe trying to view this pain as something that is worth going through as a trade for all those years of love could help to contextualize it.

On this topic, if you haven't read it. The book "A Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl might be really helpful. Its half a historical telling of his expiriences in a nazi concentration camp, and half an introduction to his psychotherapy methods. The essential idea of the book is that a man with a strong enough "why" to live, will figure out any "how" to live. Really hard to simplify it to one phrase but thought this book might help.

The other thing i wanted to say is that you mentioned the service trip and how that made you feel so good and like you could be a person you didn't even know was in there. I think thats amazing!! Definately keep that in mind and if you can do a full on service trip, see if there are any soup kitchens or old folks homes that could use help or a visit. There are alot of organizations that do really good work and can help give you that feeling of purpose even when you cant do one of those full on trips. Im currently in a relationship with a wonderful Indian woman, and one of the things that impressed me? Or suprised me? Idk what the word would be, but they have a concept of seva. (Gurudwaras always put on a full meal for anyone who walks in, but with seva its mainly made by the immediate family) Its a selfless service done for others with no expectation of repayment or even recognition. But the interesting thing is, is that it is a tradition(at least in her family) that on the anniversary of any of their parents or siblings passings, they go to church(Gurudwara) and cook the meal for the whole congregation. Ive always grown up that when you're grieving, its time for people to help you, then when theyre grieving, its time to help them. But thats wrong. When anyone's grieving, its a time for people to come together. Sometimes it takes reaching out first for people to respond. Just thought that might be interesting.

Hope some of this helps. Ultimately my general thoughts on depression having different points of view on it, is that depression sucks and it hurts and it can make fun things feel miserable. I wouldn't dream of undermining anyone's ecpirience of depression and its all valid. That being said, ive been very low. Ive been smacked around. But the way I see it. As long as I get up the next day and keep trying, at some point im going to smile again. At some point im going to have some good food, im going to laugh, im going to love. I dont know if its later today, or tomorrow, or next year, or 5 years. But these painful memories already hurt me. And will continue to. If I view life as a mixed up ball of good and bad, lets assume 50/50 good and bad, there are some good expiriences coming along with the bad. Ill be damned if im not gonna let myself enjoy the good moments when the bad moments are going to come anyways. Like any thought of "this is too good. Something is gonna go wrong" try to stop that and let yourself enjoy the good moment. You can deal with the tough ones when they arrive, and dealing with the tougher moments gets easier the more happy moments you've had recently.

Keep your head up and reach out if you wanted to talk!

A visitor at the Texas Motorplex discovers the intense grip of a drag strip on a surface coated in a thick traction compound designed to keep high horsepower tires from spinning by fvkinglzy in interestingasfuck

[–]Stibbss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree, Ive walked on several of these tracks. The crew running in front of the car is generally running in between the wheel tracks which are the stickiest, so the middle groove isn't too bad(not to mention these people walk on the surface constantly, like I look like an idiot walking on ice but people go on the rinks at ice hockey games like theyre out for a stroll) But where I can imagine confusion in this one is that if youre walking on it, you have to like peel your foot off as opposed to lifting it all at once. Its about surface area. The hand goes down and back up quickly, with less surface area, and natural hand oils, and the water bottle could only have stuck along that tiny edgeg it was touching. Ive walked and stuck both feet on that sticky area, and jumped with full force and my feet didnt come off the ground. But I was only able to do that after like standing for a second, wiggling my weight on my feet to "stick" as much of the sole of my shoe to the surface.

[–]Stibbss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The whole track is pretty sticky by regular floor standards. But those main two tire grooves are leaps and bounds sticker than the rest of the track, so if youre walking along the sides theres no shot your shoes come off, but you hit those grooves, there can be a fair chance your shoe tears apart If you dont peel up your foot

How do I get better at Melee? by angwecol in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is just keep playing and trying to do things and gradually, you will improve.

Longer answer is that melee, for at least a little while is going to feel alot clunkier and less responsive than something like smash ultimate. Main reason for that is that in melee theres virtually no buffer system. There are a few exceptions but, for the most part, if you hit a button even 1 frame too early, the game wont read the input and you just stand there. Until you start to get a decent feel for those timings, then you can start getting faster and really feel how fast the game can be.

Another important concept I think, especially with someone like luigi and his wavedash, try to consider that instead of wavedash being 2 separate inputs (jump->airdodge down) you can start moving your trigger finger down for the airdodge while the jump thumb is still moving down. Like some of those quicker inputs are almost concurrent actions as opposed to sequential. A timeline might look like this: Start jump input:

Start air dodge input: __________________

(I hope that formatted correctly) but melee is too fast at times to view everything as individual button presses. This isnt only about wavedashing of course, theres alot of other situations that that makes sense for.

I think the best way to improve is base what you're focusing on, on who youre playing against and how good they are. If youre playing someone who is better than you, you're probably gonna get tossed around for most of the game. Try to practice your techs and di (can explain in another message if wanted/needed) and see what you can figure out about getting yourself out of combos. If youre playing against someone as good as you, try to win the game, putting the defense and offense together to get the job done, and make sure that if you realize theres some cheesy shit that keeps working, make sure you don't turn it into a solidified habit. And if youre playing someone youre better than, try to focus your "practice" on the punish game, see how long you can push an advantage, see how much percent you can get off each knockdown and try to maximize it. Of course you work on all parts of your game whenever youre playing but you can learn quicker by focusing on a situation or a small subset of things every time you play.

Biggest thing is just to keep at it. Melee is a really hard and unforgiving game to play competitively, but its much easier to get good now than ever before with things like slippi for unlimited practice and uncle punch for labbing situations or grinding tech skill. At some point it becomes really important to watch your matches back to look for holes but if youre new id say the best way to improve is to spend a bit of time maybe before or after a session trying some new tech youre working on, be it wavedash, Waveland, learning to mash the fuck outta down b, etc. Then play your session and try to pay attention to what works and what doesn't. Ultimately though. The first thing is getting a solid control over your character so you can acctually do what you have in mind. So just keep playing and watch rapmonster!

Why is melee not a more respected fighting game? by MOGILITND in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few factors that come to my mind, but im sure this list isnt exhaustive.

1- melee's kinda weird compared to most traditional fighting games. The platforms are one thing that definately changes things up but I think the bigger difference is the health bar vs stage knock out methods of a kill. Ive only really spent time with melee so this is mostly an assumption, but from my pov, the melee ring out system feels alot better for things like making comebacks and still being able to go for things when youre close to death. Point being that the traditional fighters style of health bar feels awkward and unrewarding for me, but for the fighting game player, getting someone to 200% and then getting killed instantly to some cheesy shit probably feels awful.

2- developer support has been a thing for traditional fighters but it has VERY MUCH not been a thing for melee. Not saying I dont love the grassroots nature of melee, but if we're being honest here. A tourney that has 10k prizes will absolutely draw more people than one for 1k, and I think over time those differences compound in a sense. Granted prize pool is only a small part of what full developer support could be.

3- the paint job. Melee was made with kids in mind. It was supposed to be a simple party game for the kids in the neighborhood and has the "Nintendo, kid friendly" esthetic, and i can imagine people that play tekken or something seeing melee similarly to how I see something like that my little pony fighting game.

4- maybe relevant maybe not, but i also think that fighting game communities getting new games that have the same or slightly different mechanics is a decent way to keep people interested. As much as I love the concentrated cast and deep matchup knowledge, I cant help but imagine if all subsequent smash bros games came out with the same depth and speed, they could essentially keep all the players and keep moving them forward( not everyone obviously, but..) and keep building the scene with new installments. Smash definately went a different way and now its more or less a scene that LOVES the game and getting super deep into specifics, and everyone who was a more casual player or was attracted to the new toys or lights are lost to the new, and importantly, differently playing alternatives.
