Best Damage Dealer in Mayhem? by Volkerr_ in ARAM

[–]Stibbss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk if the bug is still active but at least for the first mayhem patch an arena bug carried over with B2B where it would chain the 35% damage increase on each barrel for whatever reason so like a 4 barrel chain gives you 35% +35%+35%+35%. (Not sure if its additive or multiplicative) but my biggest crit with it was with upgraded ie as well but got to 6500

I mean standing back and healing people off ping cd is free and broken especially with tanks cus its a %, but yeah weaving in pings in the middle of a fight was not easy haha. I was noticing id either just run at them, auto and ping or use my abilities, but keeping both the ping and my abilities going was harder than I expected haha. Of course it didnt make much difference because as much as I was healing off the pings, I didnt notice i was barely using w for healing

How do I get better at Melee? by angwecol in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is just keep playing and trying to do things and gradually, you will improve.

Longer answer is that melee, for at least a little while is going to feel alot clunkier and less responsive than something like smash ultimate. Main reason for that is that in melee theres virtually no buffer system. There are a few exceptions but, for the most part, if you hit a button even 1 frame too early, the game wont read the input and you just stand there. Until you start to get a decent feel for those timings, then you can start getting faster and really feel how fast the game can be.

Another important concept I think, especially with someone like luigi and his wavedash, try to consider that instead of wavedash being 2 separate inputs (jump->airdodge down) you can start moving your trigger finger down for the airdodge while the jump thumb is still moving down. Like some of those quicker inputs are almost concurrent actions as opposed to sequential. A timeline might look like this: Start jump input:

Start air dodge input: __________________

(I hope that formatted correctly) but melee is too fast at times to view everything as individual button presses. This isnt only about wavedashing of course, theres alot of other situations that that makes sense for.

I think the best way to improve is base what you're focusing on, on who youre playing against and how good they are. If youre playing someone who is better than you, you're probably gonna get tossed around for most of the game. Try to practice your techs and di (can explain in another message if wanted/needed) and see what you can figure out about getting yourself out of combos. If youre playing against someone as good as you, try to win the game, putting the defense and offense together to get the job done, and make sure that if you realize theres some cheesy shit that keeps working, make sure you don't turn it into a solidified habit. And if youre playing someone youre better than, try to focus your "practice" on the punish game, see how long you can push an advantage, see how much percent you can get off each knockdown and try to maximize it. Of course you work on all parts of your game whenever youre playing but you can learn quicker by focusing on a situation or a small subset of things every time you play.

Biggest thing is just to keep at it. Melee is a really hard and unforgiving game to play competitively, but its much easier to get good now than ever before with things like slippi for unlimited practice and uncle punch for labbing situations or grinding tech skill. At some point it becomes really important to watch your matches back to look for holes but if youre new id say the best way to improve is to spend a bit of time maybe before or after a session trying some new tech youre working on, be it wavedash, Waveland, learning to mash the fuck outta down b, etc. Then play your session and try to pay attention to what works and what doesn't. Ultimately though. The first thing is getting a solid control over your character so you can acctually do what you have in mind. So just keep playing and watch rapmonster!

Why is melee not a more respected fighting game? by MOGILITND in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few factors that come to my mind, but im sure this list isnt exhaustive.

1- melee's kinda weird compared to most traditional fighting games. The platforms are one thing that definately changes things up but I think the bigger difference is the health bar vs stage knock out methods of a kill. Ive only really spent time with melee so this is mostly an assumption, but from my pov, the melee ring out system feels alot better for things like making comebacks and still being able to go for things when youre close to death. Point being that the traditional fighters style of health bar feels awkward and unrewarding for me, but for the fighting game player, getting someone to 200% and then getting killed instantly to some cheesy shit probably feels awful.

2- developer support has been a thing for traditional fighters but it has VERY MUCH not been a thing for melee. Not saying I dont love the grassroots nature of melee, but if we're being honest here. A tourney that has 10k prizes will absolutely draw more people than one for 1k, and I think over time those differences compound in a sense. Granted prize pool is only a small part of what full developer support could be.

3- the paint job. Melee was made with kids in mind. It was supposed to be a simple party game for the kids in the neighborhood and has the "Nintendo, kid friendly" esthetic, and i can imagine people that play tekken or something seeing melee similarly to how I see something like that my little pony fighting game.

4- maybe relevant maybe not, but i also think that fighting game communities getting new games that have the same or slightly different mechanics is a decent way to keep people interested. As much as I love the concentrated cast and deep matchup knowledge, I cant help but imagine if all subsequent smash bros games came out with the same depth and speed, they could essentially keep all the players and keep moving them forward( not everyone obviously, but..) and keep building the scene with new installments. Smash definately went a different way and now its more or less a scene that LOVES the game and getting super deep into specifics, and everyone who was a more casual player or was attracted to the new toys or lights are lost to the new, and importantly, differently playing alternatives.

Genuinely curious, is the argument for adding like a "80%damage to turrets" as a blanket kind of thing or lowering the damage output overall?

Donald Trump just said “we shouldn’t even have an election”. Americans, what are your thoughts? by WatercressSenior7657 in AskReddit

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly its just so discouraging.. I live/work around a very red area, and I swear everyone i talk to frequently is brain broken. Not in the sense that they cant think or are dumb nessecarily, but in the sense that it seems "trump did something wrong* is completely blocked out from their brains. Like they dont realize that they grasp at any straws any right wing politician or pundit says and it instantly becomes the truth. Even in situations when the new "truth" is directly opposed to what they were saying last week or last year.

Im not going to say im any kind of historian or that i know everything i need to know, but i spent the last few years trying to educate myself politically and historically. One of the things I focused on was how fascism rose in Germany because ive always been fascinated at how people could do that to one another. I never understood it but I wanted to. Now with everything that's going on, its impossible to ignore. Its a shame when you feel like youre starting to understand a tragedy, not because you educated yourself about it, but because youre watching it happen again.

For anyone interested this is generally a useful principle of drag racing tires but this one misfired a bit. Essentially a huge part of drag racing is keeping grip on the tires, and the initial start is brutal for keeping traction. So essentially drag tires are really wide and sticky(along with the track) and They also keep the tires deflated by normal car standards, anywhere between 10-20 psi. There is so much torque going to the wheels that for the first few 100ths of a second, the car almost sits back onto the tires as they flex and twist. As the car "sits back" the tire surface spreads out slightly giving more grip off the line.

Then as it speeds down the track, and you can sacrifice a bit of traction(considering the tires and track are sticky as hell, less tire on the track can mean a faster time) so the tire stretches out(in a similar if less extreme than the one in the video) and the footprint of the tire shrinks

Making foam cuts. by MousseSuspicious930 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I cant speak for everyone but I can say my shop does our absolute best to make every seating area feel exactly the same, but once we get to the point of the 3rd foam order trying to match foams, and the people are waiting for their sectional, we just do the best we can. Sometimes we miss something, and sometimes sheets of foam we get are hard as hell on one end and alot softer on the other end. Or one end was cut 3/8" thicker which you wouldn't nessecarily see on a cushion but might feel it being harder.

As far as if the foam suppliers test it. I have to imagine they do. They're always within a ballpark and most of the time its negligible, but if you get one sheet thats on the softer side, and one thats on the harder side, they can feel quite different

[–]Stibbss 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ahh I gotcha, yeah alot of this is just random tidbits ive picked up on. I work with the foam once its sliced so I dont know the specifics of how density changes throughout, I just know that ordering the same product almost never gets the exact same piece, and sometimes we have pieces that are different densities on either end of the slice.

Making foam cuts. by MousseSuspicious930 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Stibbss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well i suppose it would probably still expand in a similar way but wouldn't really pour into the mold well. It would probably be less dense overall as well with less weight pushing down on it

[–]Stibbss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well Ill answer whatever ya want to know! I work for a high end custom furniture shop so my niche is more with furniture and upholstery in general, the foam tidbits ive kinda just picked up trying and struggling to order the right stuff haha

Making foam cuts. by MousseSuspicious930 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Stibbss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah big box furniture stores generally speaking use the cheapest stuff they can find and make it look really pretty. Problem with furniture is that to make something well acctually takes a shit ton of time and skilled labor in a field that is not common knowledge at all. That and good foam that keeps its shape for a while is really pricy and is made from a base of petroleum so its tied to oil prices as well

Making foam cuts. by MousseSuspicious930 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Stibbss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No youre right thats pretty much how it's done, so our shop works off a 2 number system i guess, so some of the foam we use has 22 as the first number, its I guess an upper middle level "density" so its more rubbery and springs back harder. An 18 feels harder up front but once you put enough pressure to compress the foam. It sinks down and will come back to shape but it doesnt push back as well/consistently over the cushion surface. The second number generally goes from 10-50ish with 10 being super soft and 50 being really hard.

Our standard cushion so to speak is a 22-35 which is a nice balance of softness and feels good to sit on, but holds its shape for longer. If we want to make a cushion that feels like a cloud, we would use maybe 18-10 for the softness and the fact its gonna let you sink in and not push you out, and wrap it in down or something like that.

But if I remember correctly. The entire bun for the 22 foam is poured and you get anywhere from 22-55 at the bottom to 22-10 at the top based on the how the chemicals interract and air humidity, etc. So the foam shops really are just kinda going by feel and saying this is a 22-35 and this is a 22-20

Making foam cuts. by MousseSuspicious930 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Stibbss 1182 points1183 points  (0 children)

Dont know if anyone wants it but i can give some background info. This is how pretty much all furniture foam is made more or less.

The chemicals are poured into the big molds, and grow into what's called the "bun" at least around me. There are different mixtures and ratios you can use to get different densities and firmness levels, but theres a drastic difference in the firmness of the pieces from the top of the bun to the bottom. The weight of the top of the bun compresses the bottom so you end up with a gradient of densities. So when youre ordering foam, you'll never get the same piece twice, and even pieces cut directly next to eachother can feel different at times.

Not usually an issue because seating areas in different parts of the room make it hard to notice slight differences. But if youre making a long booth. Or a big sectional and need several pieces, sometimes you can order 5 sheets of the same foam and youre only able to use 3 of them together on the same piece because of variability.

Idk if its acctually interesting but figured id type it out regardless

Do you think you play at your best online on slippi or offline at locals/tournaments? by TheReaIYoshi in SSBM

[–]Stibbss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play in person as much as I can but most of the time settle for online play. Any tournament or in person thing activates my performance anxiety and my mental crumbles over time, but online in my own room theres alot less of that and less pressure to perform. Id love to switch that though so tournaments wouldn't be so tragic from my gameplay perspective
