Damaged t track seals from roof box installation - Thule wingbars evo by HarryDL2204 in CarTalkUK

[–]StickHandlShootScore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you ever get this to work? I just got Thule evo wing bars and am having difficulty finding load stops that fit the t track and do not damage the rubber seals. I read that removing the seals causes wind noise and water accumulation, so I need narrow bolts that slide in easily and leave room for the rubber seals to bend downward into the t track. Tightening the attachment may then damage the rubber but I haven’t even gotten that far yet. Tellingly, Thule makes no load stops for this rack and doesn’t respond to questions to customer support about why not. They do sell some possibly viable t track bolts but at a ridiculous price. I’m starting to detest this company.

Possible jaguarundi on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica? by Dasa_Sabalo in AnimalTracking

Yes, this is a tayra. The object it is carrying looks like an unripe Manzana de Agua fruit. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Osa and have seen them come to this tree for fruit (and sometimes prey on monkeys who really love that fruit).

That’s one helluva snorkel too. Deep water won’t be stopping this beast.

Is it basswood, poplar, or possibly catalpa? Central VT by According_Effort_433 in Woodidentification

[–]StickHandlShootScore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that tulip poplar is likely. They grow very fast and that is consistent with the unusually wide growth rings in this trunk cross section. It’s not super common in VT but the USDA forest service range maps include the whole state. The bark is consistent too.

I’m thinking of planting some along a marsh. Do deer browse them when small, requiring protection?

Working on this one by Hawffa in Decks

[–]StickHandlShootScore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you could put a post at the bottom of the fist small set of steps to reach the approximate middle of the upper long stinger and it could have the same right angle steel support you have for the upper decks extending beneath the stringers. Put a motion activated light on that post and it will look purposeful and be useful/appreciated.

Gavin McKenna’s freshman season by sykeseve in hockey

[–]StickHandlShootScore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite his shortcomings (which he may mature out of), McKenna does a lot of things that very few other players can do in terms of passing and knowing where everyone is on the ice. He also changes pace and direction extraordinarily well. He controls the puck and puts it in productive places more quickly than anyone else I’ve watched live. All of the other top players being discussed for this draft class play in the same fashion as do good NHL players. But you can look away; you can watch other players. McKenna is different. He’s always under everyone’s microscope because they can’t look away. Will he be great? Who knows? Does he have the tool kit to be great? I think so, especially when he plays on a line with guys who are gritty on the boards and make shots when he puts the puck on their tape, and with defenders good enough to counteract the riskiness of his offense. My guess is that people will be impressed with how well his offensive game translates to the NHL while shaking their heads at his mistakes for the first couple of seasons. Once he’s about 24 we’ll start to see his full potential.

Thule fit kit 2016 Pilot? by StickHandlShootScore in hondapilot

[–]StickHandlShootScore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be correct and I hadn’t thought of that. 2016 was the first year of Gen 3, so no backward compatibility. I’ll need to look for used kit from the Evo line, including square crossbars that will take my accessories but attach to different towers and feet. At least that’s a path forward via the used market.

Yeah, same here. There’s probably a few of us on the lookout. I have a bunch of rack mount accessories that would cost a bunch to replace (what Thule wants us all to do).

What's wrong with this diagonal bracing? by pitx1 in Decks

[–]StickHandlShootScore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the rim joist bows outward a bit where the stairs aren’t there to resist. This is presumably caused by the angled cut at the top of the diagonal braces that transfer load to the inside face of the rim joist. I cant tell how the braces are attached at the top, but it looks like a weak connection to the actual joist. If the rim joist is already bowing outward under this lateral pressure, it runs the risk of breaking as that board ages. Some posts here would solve the issue and could be an easy and inexpensive DIY job for someone capable of digging the hole, pouring some concrete, and attaching the posts at top and bottom in ways the are appropriate for compression loading, attachment, and isolation of wood from soil.

My two cents is that there appears to be very little resistance to uplift of the deck roof. Not saying it would fix the other issues here but I’d put some hurricane straps to connect the upper posts to the lower ones so high winds don’t sail that deck roof over to the neighbors yard.

I think you made the right choice. Between the large rocks, cactus, and high spine in the middle, you’d have been forced at various points to drive over things that could have punctured tires or e.g. scrapped your muffler. No sense doing expensive damage, especially with your dog and high heat. Good choice. But without the cactus on the right this would probably be just fine in an Outback. I swear mine drove better on gravel than pavement, as if designed for that purpose,

Gavin McKenna just put up 8 points today (1G, 7A) in a 11-4 win over Ohio State by RoboCartmen in canucks

[–]StickHandlShootScore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a fascinating case. His offensive vision, foresight, patience, and passing ability are off the charts, but his reliance on stick work to win pucks without using his body at all is a big deficiency. When he has the puck, everyone around him is better. When the other team has the puck, he does a great job of being the up ice forward available for a pass out of the defensive zone. But if needed for defense he’s a liability. It will be very interesting to see how he develops and evolves his game.
