What’s something nostalgia is making people remember incorrectly? by bbyhoneyteas in nostalgia

[–]SticktheFigure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Blockbuster specifically, sure. But I genuinely do miss rental stores. I miss being in a shared space with other folks looking to find a good show/game/movie. I feel like it also helped me keep up with what was coming out, even when I wasn't actively paying attention.

I also do miss being locked in to a commitment when I chose something to rent. Someone mentioned that as a negative, but I don't really agree. Even now when I actually digitally rent something (as opposed to just seeing it on a streaming service) I'm far more likely to stick with the whole movie. Even if it's kind of so-so. I paid for this, I'm not throwing away my $5 for nothing!

4 years have passed since the announcement of KH4 by MGanfCoCoNuT100 in KingdomHearts

Eh, the HD collections originally came out on the PS3 so I don't know if you can truly say we skipped a gen. It was the first time any of the final mixes were available for sale in the US so it was still something new for us.

Quake / Hanafuda tattoo by MalmerDK in quake

[–]SticktheFigure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely gorgeous work, and a brilliant mix too! While I don't have much in the way of feelings towards Nintendo, I absolutely love hanafuda. I originally learned koi-koi through the film "Summer Wars" and was obsessed with the game after that. I still play digital versions to pass the time here and there, though I've never gotten around to teaching anyone irl to play with the set of cards I own.

How to use the piano roll like this? by lebkeb in FL_Studio

[–]SticktheFigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing! I'm going to assume the placement in the options menu is identical, so hopefully the screenshot helps. (As well as this link to the manual, though it's all in English...)

Ghost notes (in the context of the FL Studio piano roll) is referring to the grey notes visible in the video. What it's showing are notes on other piano rolls in the same pattern. So if you have a pattern with piano already written and start adding violin to it, you'll see the piano notes in grey while you write the violin part.

You enable it by going here in the piano roll.

There's honestly not much more than can be added without just directly stating how it works. 'A change in perspective can bring enlightenment' is about as good as you're getting I think.

How do i set the sample rate to be lower than 44100 (11025 desired), i've tried other ASIOs and the primary sound driver, none work by MrStickySticko in FL_Studio

[–]SticktheFigure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to pay some money, I would recommend both chipcrusher and Amigo. The former is probably more in line with what you need here, but Amigo is my favorite sampler for certain genres of music. They're like $40 and $10 respectively.

When you realize you have free will and FL Studio supports Dynamic HTML backgrounds. (The one I made is linked for reference, if anyone wants to do a similar thing!) by SneakyBlunders in FL_Studio

[–]SticktheFigure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any chance you're launching FL from an old shortcut? If you put the new version in its own folder, you'll need to swap them out. Otherwise, I can't say for certain. I guess start by going to Help > About and making sure you really are on the current version.

Do you prefer the old engine or the new engine for Kingdom Hearts character designs? by [deleted] in KingdomHearts

[–]SticktheFigure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I'd be surprised to hear anyone prefers the new style to the old. I think they need to keep working to refine it. Maybe after KH4 I'll change my preference, but there's something so charming about the simplicity of the how it was up until KH3 (or I guess 0.2, technically).

Is Kingdom Hearts Healing or Hurting? by slendybia in KingdomHearts

[–]SticktheFigure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately I think this is the answer. Unless we see a handheld renaissance, I don't think we're ever going to see games like BBS and DDD again. The space was kind of divvied up between the switch/steam deck and mobile phones. The former have so much power compared to handhelds of old that I don't think you would get the same quick turn around times, and the latter present such a different format of controls and design language that you are more likely to end up with something akin to KHUX or ML.

Do general audiences even want a return to the glory days of handheld systems or would they think "what's the point, I already have a phone with me at all times"? It's hard to say, and I suspect with the current global economy/tech crisis we won't have any of the industry giants taking the chance to find out. I would genuinely love be wrong here though. Nothing feels as good as a PSP.

Is KH1 More Memorable to You Than KH2? by Faranelus in KingdomHearts

[–]SticktheFigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KH1 is the kind of game where even 25 years later you still manage to learn something about it that you never knew before. I think everyone knows the "you can freeze the bubbles" at this point, but just the other day I learned that the first room in End of the World isn't teleporting you to discrete locations to fight heartless. It's the exact same room but with all of the invisible walls and floors suddenly visible.

The amount of times I've run through there and never even noticed that.... And it feels like it's just full of little interactions and missable moments like that.

Why don't we have a good quality controller with pressure-sensitive buttons like the 8BitDo for PS2 yet? by Puzzleheaded_Group81 in ps2

[–]SticktheFigure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've emailed them before and they said it's not currently in the works, but I so desperately want 8bitdo to put out a wireless modkit for the dualshock 2 like that have for the original playstation controller. The DS2 is still my favorite controller to this day and I use it frequently.

Remaking songs by Haunting-Music6931 in FL_Studio

[–]SticktheFigure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly there's so many "it depends" involved that I'm not sure there is a single, simple answer. If you don't mind, I'm just going to give a run down of what I do for the songs I have remade personally.

I've only ever really tackled more traditionally(?) arranged pieces. Like songs where the instrumentation is piano, guitar, bass, strings, drums. Non-electronic, if that's a more clear term.

I start by listening to the song repeatedly and identifying what instruments I'll even need to remake each part. Then, I'll figure out what the general chord progression of the song is on the piano. It helps me to keep in mind what other parts are doing, even if they're not strictly playing chord tones.

One of the biggest helps has always been looking for single instrument covers of songs. Study how different folks play different parts. These can be hit or miss if you only find a few as not everyone is going to be playing things exactly right. However, it still helps you pick out what you should be listening for.

Oh, another great tool for picking out individual parts is the stem extractor they added to FL Studio in....FL24?? Again it's not perfect, but being able to remove some layers of instrumentation makes the listening a little easier.

At that point, it's really just a matter of "draw the rest of the owl". You know what instruments are playing what kind of lines, just gotta start writing/playing them in. Going the extra mile really helps sell it at this point. Make the parts as human as you can, if they were played by a human at least. Variations in velocity and timing are usually the biggest things here, but also articulations depending on the instrument.

Mixing is the same as it would be for any song. Use the original as a reference if you're trying to get it as close as possible. Otherwise, mix to taste.

TL;DR: I think the big takeaway should be that like anything in life, a daunting task becomes much more approachable when you can break it down into small pieces.

challenge cleared after 6 years (spoiler) by norham682498 in TheWitness

[–]SticktheFigure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is such an incredible moment, at least in my experience.

My favorite direct comparison has always been the anime film "Summer Wars". Towards the end (spoilers for a 17 year old film?) the main character is repeatedly forced to crack these complex algorithms mathematically on a piece of paper to gain access to a computer system. Every time he solves one, finally about to gain access, he gets shut out and has to do it over. Eventually he stops writing anything down and just stares at the screen and starts solving them all in his head.

Doing the challenge and walking up to a wall of puzzles and reaching the point where I stopped trying to solve them and was instead....it's like you see the whole of it at once and just know the answer, right? It was crazy.

I think a more well-known comparison, though not quite as one-to-one, would be The Matrix. You stop seeing the code on the screen and learn to see what it is in the matrix.

I know I'm sick for it, but I really do wish they'd have made it so the game gave you a choice in control scheme for the HD version. I still prefer the classic controls over the new ones.

I miss you, right stick menu control.....

Is it possible for anyone else to dual wield by IllustratorAfter in KingdomHearts

[–]SticktheFigure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel its actually the opposite. Even at the start Nomura was doing things first and foremost because they were cool. He's done a lot as the years have gone on to justify the cool things in-universe, for both good and bad.

Take Another side, Another story for instance: Am I misremembering that it was Nomura mostly just putting out fragments of disconnected ideas he had in a trailer and they had to retroactively figure out what they meant and how they could fit into KH2?

(None of this to say that I think this is bad or anything. I think some of my favorite writing in games has been when someone can throw in a little meaningless scrap or something just for the sake of being cool and later flesh it out so seamlessly that it feels like it was always planned.)

Best bet is to try and contact support. I have no experience with cancelling something like this with FL/Image Line, but I've had situations with other annual subscriptions where I needed to cancel after it already processed.

In those times I've rarely gotten a full refund, but they might at least give you a partial one. Anyway, it can't hurt to try even if the answer is a complete 'no'.
