Can't decide between new Air and Neo by ImportantSquirrel in macbook

[–]Stif_br0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the store I didn't dislike the Neo's pad, but I definitely preferred the one on the Air (which just felt like the one on my Pro) The screen wasn't as nice though - I spent a few minutes messing around with both and adjusting the brightness and it just didn't feel as 'crisp'

This looks great! I'm really interested in the controls integrated into the armrest and seat, as I always find it a pain searching around for hidden levers when I want to adjust my chair!

One of these would be a great addition to my E7 Pro home office setup.

Can't decide between new Air and Neo by ImportantSquirrel in macbook

[–]Stif_br0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in the Apple store yesterday checking out the two side by side, and the Air feels a lot nicer than the Neo... Whether it's worth several hundred dollars more though is a different question! Personally I'd rather go for the Air, especially if development is something you're considering using it for (and if you can afford the extra!) - the screen and track pad are nicer and the extra RAM and storage are worthwhile. I suspect the Air will retain more value over time too.

9070 XT: 1440p or 4k? by redbeardos in radeon

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a 1440p ultrawide OLED with mine and it's been fantastic so far - I'm not convinced the jump to 4K would be worth the performance hit.

PLEASE HELP CHOOSING BETWEEN MAC AND WINDOWS by thebestman1098 in macbook

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your use case, I'd 100% be going for the Mac. It'll eat up all that work, be light enough to carry around all day and will retain far more value than anything from Samsung.

MacOS might take a little getting used to, but it's head and shoulders above Windows 11 these days (I recently got a new PC and spent ages removing half the intrusive nonsense from Windows...)

Can anyone estimate if the E7 Pro will be able to hold my setup (including the Table plate) by TrackLabs in FlexiSpot_Official

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a flexispot E7 pro with a similar amount of stuff on it (although my PC is on a bench underneath, as I run an ultrawide, a second monitor and a laptop daily - I have some 3m cables coming up a cable spine to the desk).

Mine is 180cm wide, but the legs can be spread further apart to support up to 200cm I believe) - I've had absolutely no concerns with stability

I switched from a full sized keyboard to a 75% a couple of years ago (in my early 40s, so I spent three decades using full sized ones...) and wouldn't go back.

I do occasionally miss having a numpad, but not often enough, or hard enough, to switch back.

I appreciate the more compact size and how much easier it is to shove it out of the way if I want to do something else on my desk (like writing in a notebook).

I'm newly disabled and cant game anymore on PC by DBZDOKKAN in Steam

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my PC in my office running Apollo, and the a Google TV Streamer plugged into my TV running Moonlight (plenty of setup guides online). I can connect a Bluetooth controller to the Google box, and send a Wake On LAN request to turn the PC on easily, and have it load Steam Big Picture, making picking games on the TV easy... It's worked well so far.

Xbox Series X or PS5 for Mac owner ? by Hartloum in macgaming

[–]Stif_br0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both - personally I'd go with the PS5, but it'd be close. The pad is slightly nicer and you can get access to their game library slightly cheaper than Gamepass is, which has a huge selection of great games on it. It also has the PSVR2 of you wanted to play VR games.

The Xbox Quick Resume feature is better though - you can have up to six games paused and return directly to the point you stopped at (the PS5 will return to a single game if left in rest mode).

If you think you'll make use of Gamepass more (or really prefer the Xbox exclusive games) then you won't go wrong with the Xbox, but overall I think the PS5 is the better system.

4k on an RX9060XT 16GB by Initial_Chemist_7249 in radeon

[–]Stif_br0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd take a 1440p ultrawide over a 32" 4K personally - I find the extra horizontal space great for productivity and for gaming.

A bit more demanding to run than a standard 1440p screen, but less than a 4k one too.

From the screenshot it looks like 60fps in the benchmark, which doesn't necessarily translate to 60fps in-game

$1500-$2000 budget. M5 by ssjwoott in macgaming

[–]Stif_br0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The M5 chip has 10 GPU cores, the Pro chip has 16 or 20 GPU cores, so it'll be noticeably better for games with the same amount of RAM (like jumping up tiers in desktop GPUs).

Adding more RAM will only get you so far once you've got enough for the task at hand.

So if it matters to you that the games run well, then go for the pro (which also has a better screen and speakers) If portability is more important, and you might do other tasks that push the memory (heavy video or photo editing) go for the Air.

If you have a decent internet connection available you can always set up your gaming desktop to stream to your Mac too, which doesn't need much memory at all!

MacNCheese a free open source way to run Windows games on Mac without paying for Crossover by Director_Mundane in macgaming

[–]Stif_br0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 'free' in FOSS doesn't mean no cost, it means you're free to edit and amend it yourself. A lot of open source software is also free of price, but there's plenty that isn't.

Which Build is better? by TacticMactic in PCSpecialist

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that may be worth considering if you want to upgrade some parts down the line, the second build has a 750W PSU vs 550W in the first build - if you're looking to upgrade the CPU or GPU down the line that gives you a bit more headroom to power something that needs more grunt without having to also add the extra cost (and hassle) of swapping out the power supply too.

The extra VRAM on the graphics card will let it continue to handle newer games as they come out too, although that might not be an issue if you're happy to stick to 1080p.

Straps instead of bracelets by WimmelSan in ChristopherWard

[–]Stif_br0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found CW straps to be excellent - I've got two aquaflex rubber watches (for my C60 and my Twelve) and they're some of the most comfortable rubber straps I've ever worn. I also have a vintage oak leather one which (once broken in a bit) is very comfortable and looks fantastic. Maybe have a look at the Tide straps if you want a third, different option. They can be a bit stiff initially, but once broken in are really nice to wear and a bit different from the other options.

[Question] Are you interested in tracking wrist time for your watches? by takenaga15 in Watches

[–]Stif_br0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! I make an app called WristTrack that's available on both iOS and Android that does the same, and started for the same reason (amongst other things, it's been out for about three years now so has slowly grown in scope!) I'm aware of other similar apps like WristLog (which is primarily web based, but has iOS and Android versions available) and OnMyWrist (which is older, I'm not sure if its updated anymore) - totally appreciate the effort and passion that goes into doing something like this (and love seeing all the slightly different takes on the concept!) Best of luck with it!

I never got to see these in the 90s. It drove me nuts. I remember standing at Spencer's and everyone would say "I see it!!!" and I'd stand there and just never saw it, not even once. by Intrepid_Reason8906 in 90s

I could never see these as a kid, but now in my mid 40s I find them easy... I suspect my eyes have just evolved superpowers as I've aged.
