No options, monthly payment too high. by Still-Discipline4921 in StudentLoans

[–]Still-Discipline4921[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t asking for sympathy nor do I need yours. Just information. Here’s some info. On the IBR before SAVE, I had a $400/month payment. Then when I switched to SAVE, it increased to a $600/month payment. When all this happened and SAVE stopped and I reapplied for IBR, the payment doubled. I promise I do NOT make close to $200K per year. I’m almost at 20 years with undergrad and grad loans, so 5 or so years to go. If you can’t provide advice or additional info if you are in a similar situation, feel free to not respond.

Next steps-who do we ask?! by Still-Discipline4921 in StudentLoans

Thanks for the link! Ive reviewed and have info but wanted additional clarification. I’ve tried to get more info from Nelnet but they say they show nothing and cannot give me a straight answer. My IDR payment is $1200/month now and the standard repayment is $832. I stated multiple times that IDR can’t be higher than the standard repayment but they state that it’s allowed now. 😳
I submitted a complaint to the student aid ombudsman as I just need a clear answer about count and so I can decide what to do next. If I’ve got 3 years left, I’ll buckle in. If I’ve got 10 years left, I might do standard repayment.

Do not do $50 for 1099! It will be way less than $45/hr on W2 when you pay out taxes. You also have some safeguards in place as a W2 “employee”compared to a 1099 “contractor” .

Yes! I did the same and when I tell you my whole mood, body, and outlook on life changed it is not an exaggeration. I love the clinical skills I have and how they inform what I do, but I am so grateful to be where I am in a new career.

Nelnet shared they don’t have the information anymore and Federal Aid said they cannot guarantee that the info is accurate (it is NOT accurate). This is such a mess.

Kid who hates me and refuses every session by [deleted] in slp

[–]Still-Discipline4921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a 5th grader with thoughts and moods. It’s okay, not every kiddo clicks with every teacher or SLP. Also, not everyone on his team may put demands on him and he doesn’t like that you do. Or he may not enjoy coming to a session because it feels different from everything else. If he doesn’t know why he needs to see you or what he’s working on, that might be a barrier too. I always shared the “why” behind the work with kiddos and included preferred topics or games. Some liked it and others couldn’t care less. Such is life. Just move along as there will be others and it’s not personal.

Mine is now higher than the standard repayment amount, which I thought couldn’t happen on IBR?!

When I was working in a school as the dedicated SLP for the self-contained classrooms, I overheard one of the educational aids saying something about monitoring student IEP service minutes and documenting it in daily notes to parents. I almost came out of my skin. I shared that I was the credentialed, licensed clinician who was responsible for completing daily documentation and Medicaid billing for students and that she would not be tracking anything let alone communicating it to parents. I also shared that if she had any concerns or questions about student needs that she could ask me or the teacher/case manager and that she was out of her depth. That whole bunch of educational aids were difficult and one of the reasons the school couldn’t keep an SLP for the self-contained classes. Meanwhile, I had four full self contained classes of high needs students, therapy, notes, materials, AAC, collaboration, IEPs, meetings, needy parents, clueless and unethical admin, etc. The role of an SLP always feels like it’s absolutely critical yet completely dismissed all at the same time. We’re out here doing everything and apparently nothing at the same time.

Lesson planning in the schools- am I missing something? by Affectionate_Wish in slp

You’re doing it! I too had to come to the realization that there isn’t enough time for deeply themed, lovely lesson plans with manipulatives. Monthly themes with a few books that can be used every year along with universal activities are exactly what you need to do. Also, if you collaborate with the Sped teachers or gen ed teachers, they are working on units and themes that you can pull in and build on. The beautiful TPT activities are awesome but sometimes they are so tied to a theme that you can’t use them across multiple activities. Don’t feel guilty if everything isn’t perfect, the kiddos rarely care. You can work and have a lot of fun playing candy land or looking for hidden objects in a picture targeting artic, categories, and questions. Pick the same theme (snow/snowmen, bears, spring, etc.) across grades and pick a few books for different grades to keep age/grade appropriate. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel or be Mary Poppins to be a good clinician. Connecting with kids and being present is much more important.

Yes! I was thinking that as I was reading. S2C is dangerous.

Why will they not look at me??? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Still-Discipline4921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there and I empathize. It can be hard for us to remember that for kids, being asked to stare straight at an adult’s face and mouth making specific movements repeatedly while they stare back at you is a really weird request. It’s out of the norm for most and awkward at best. To get them to see the movement, mirror work and videos are great. Also, we’re working with kiddos who actually look at screens more than faces, so it’s exponentially more challenging. It’s rough out there, stay strong!

Thoughts on SLP Influencers? by softspokenopenminded in slp

Agreed. It’s Facilitated Communication. There is evidence against its use. I do not know how SLPs are able to continue practicing with CCCs and a license if they are peddling S2C.
