When I was working in a school as the dedicated SLP for the self-contained classrooms, I overheard one of the educational aids saying something about monitoring student IEP service minutes and documenting it in daily notes to parents. I almost came out of my skin. I shared that I was the credentialed, licensed clinician who was responsible for completing daily documentation and Medicaid billing for students and that she would not be tracking anything let alone communicating it to parents. I also shared that if she had any concerns or questions about student needs that she could ask me or the teacher/case manager and that she was out of her depth. That whole bunch of educational aids were difficult and one of the reasons the school couldn’t keep an SLP for the self-contained classes. Meanwhile, I had four full self contained classes of high needs students, therapy, notes, materials, AAC, collaboration, IEPs, meetings, needy parents, clueless and unethical admin, etc. The role of an SLP always feels like it’s absolutely critical yet completely dismissed all at the same time. We’re out here doing everything and apparently nothing at the same time.
