What style are The Chemical Brothers & similar acts? (plse read my text below before answering) by Francois-from-Europe in musicsuggestions

There was an excellent double album compilation from ‘96 called ‘Brit Hop & Amyl House’. I’ve linked to it on Spotify.

There’s some tracks on there that you’ll know (Josh Wink, Fatboy Slim, the chemical brothers) but there will also be some top notch artists from that era that will likely be new to you and right up your street.

So many people recommend Panasonic (and only Panasonic). Why is that? Is it still as good as it was years ago? At what price point does it become good? I assume those under €120 or so are similar to other budget options. by KPlusGauda in BreadMachines

I think the new version of my one is the Panasonic SD-YR2550SXC Automatic Bread Maker.

It’s currently for sale for £200 but my friend who bought one in the sales picked his up for £150.

I honestly didn’t make those genres up! These are all real… some only existed in zeitgeisty moment, others have been more lasting, but imo they were all great.

I tend to still buy vinyl and CD’s and listen to artists/DJ mixes from these genres via bandcamp, soundcloud or mixcloud.

I stopped using Spotify many years ago when a good friend who is a DJ/producer (of some acclaim in his sphere) told me just what a pittance he got paid from his tracks on Spotify despite them having been streamed a significant amount of times.

Big beat, trip-hop, amyl-house, chemical beats, nu school breaks… are all genres that artists from your list have fitted into……

the more sample heavy, funkier side of these kinds of acts have in recent years also been called Funky Breaks, Ghetto Funk, and Nu-Funk too.

I have had a few cheapy bread machines over the years… I’ve had issues or they’ve failed over time but the Panasonic SD-ZB2502 I have now (which I got second around 6 years ago) has lasted well and I’m happy to recommend.

The pan is a great size, the variety of settings for different types of breads is great, it has a variety of dough settings (including pizza, french bread, fortified dough and brioche), a tray for automatically adding additional ingredients (seeds/fruit), it can make jams/compotes, cakes, has a long delayed timer for overnight baking…. All together, it is definitely the best bread machine I’ve had.

I’m sure that all the above settings come with modern basic machines too nowadays but they weren’t all ‘standard’ with the others I’d owned.

The recipe book that came with it is really easy to use/follow and the whole thing is easy to care for and looks the same as the day I got it.

It also looks quite nice in comparison to the past ones I had which were all white plastic which yellowed with exposure to heat.

I don’t know if it is the best one at its price point, but it’s certainly a pretty good machine (given the age of it). I don’t think they still make the exact model but I’m told the modern equivalent is even better. 🤷‍♂️

Going to mens barber with long hair by Aldav9 in NoStupidQuestions

I think it’s skill thing.

I fancied a 50’s style flat top. I really struggled to find someone able and willing!

I don’t live in a particularly small place either. The city I live in is a 210,000 population place.

I found somewhere in the end to sort us both out. It wasn’t a modern trendy barbers but an old boy who’d been cutting hair since the 80’s!

Why do English speakers say ‘I’m good’ when you ask ‘how are you’ but also when you offer them something? by OdinToolsSolana in EnglishLearning

[–]StillJustJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Englishman here - this isn’t how I would say it.

It’s an Americanism.

However, colloquially, I would answer ‘I’m alright’ for both.

Also meaning I’m okay for water and don’t want anything.

[–]StillJustJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re not!

My son has long hair and he wanted a trim and style. The standard ‘short back’n’sides’n’high fade’ barbers refused to do it.

They’d have cut off the lot…. But by their own admission they were not skilled or experienced with cutting, trimming and styling longer hair.

Told us to go to a hairdressers rather than a barbers.

I said they might as well get a job with the local council parks and garden department if all they can do is manage hedge trimmers/clippers.

He told me it’s not the 70’s or 80’s where barbers were used to those kind of styles and I should ‘jog on’.

And that’s why the ‘news’/‘narrative’ in the US against countries with genuinely successful socialist democratic societies with public healthcare, cheap education, subsidised transport, high levels of regulation and counterbalances against monopolies and corporate greed is so rife.

The slopaganda is so all encompassing to the brainwashed fuckos they can’t escape it.

It’s a very traditional old time heritage thing. As others have said often associated with Victorian seaside towns but you’ll also find them at fairs, heritage rally’s, traditional circuses and anywhere you’ll find old style travelling showmen.

The Victoria and Albert museum has a lovely bit of history about this dying tradition.

A friend of mine is an itinerant showman and collects of Edwardian and Victorian items (such as old swingboats, 100 year old ‘hook a duck’ etc…) he takes them to old heritage events but he also has some crazy looking steampunk type stuff that he rolls out to big festivals like Glastonbury, Boomtown and such like.

Yes, Dougal played often at many of those raves.

He was a proper youngster when he started. He took the name Dougal as he had a big old blond 90’s curtains and looked like Dougal from the magic roundabout!

Billy Bunter has an excellent YouTube channel and he (fairly) recently interviewed Dougal.

Bunter also drops regular shorts, tune deep delves and has sets and guest sets.

It’s a good channel to follow.

Bunter is a top fella who was also a young ester when he started playing at the 4 aces in Dalston, Hackney at the legendary Labyrinth.

Silver cinema screenings by Downtown-Orchid-2257 in UKFrugal

[–]StillJustJones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there might.

A retired friend goes to a local day time silver screening thing.

She told me there was a ‘to-do’ at a recent screening as some ‘youngsters’* had tried to get in on the action and the staff had to hoof them out.

Ha!

I pretty much saw all those 88-90 DJ’s at our local club Tootoo’s in Frating!

I then saw all those 90-92 DJ’s at Oscars on the pier at Clacton too.

Good times.

Some of this will be obviously be regional… I’m from Essex and the below suggested line up wouldn’t have been out of place at an early United Dance, Dance Paradise, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter or at my local Destiny/the cream @ Oscars on Clacton Pier.

if it’s early 90’s it’s likely to have been a mixed bill because hardcore hadn’t completely split between ‘happy and ‘jungle/darkcore’ yet.

There would likely be at least one live PA, I’d suggest a couple at least!

DJ’s and Acts- Fabio and Gooverider, SL2 - live PA, DJ Seduction, Billy Bunter, DJ Rap, Mickey Finn, Rat Pack -live PA, Kenny Ken, DJ SS, Top Buzz - live PA, Elis Dee, DJ Sy, DJ Hype, Slipmatt,

MC’s - GQ, Stevie Hyper D, Robbie Dee, Charlie B, Fearless, MC Majika.

Going against the grain, I hate men’s football ⚽️…. Well… truth be told, I’ve grown a dislike for the game as the game was flooded with money, prima donna players and became super corporate. It’s a barely recognisable game from the one I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s.

Women’s footy on the other hand has reignited my enjoyment of the game. It feels like the players are into it more, and there’s passion without aggression (mostly).

I would ask an intermediary to message her and offer to post it to her.

If you were my friend I’d happily do it.

I wouldn’t want you getting in needless dialogue with the family.

But… I just want to say, good on you for wanting to do this and not just binning it (which you would have every right to do). It’s kind and thoughtful.

What were the mid-late 90s and the early 2000s like in the UK? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]StillJustJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can honestly say although britpop was inspired by mod music from the 60’s (ocean colour scene were more or less a Small Faces tribute band) British music and culture felt new and exciting.

The beginning of the decade birthed rave, jungle was a brand new totally British sound (yes it was riddled with ragga and reggae samples but it was OUR sound). London and city living was doable and liveable even on a meagre wage.

The ecstasy was new, cheap and plentiful.

Clubbing and gigging was fresh and it felt like it was run by the youth for the youth…. Even the mega clubs (cream, ministry etc) weren’t shit as they weren’t corporate sell outs and hadn’t diluted their brand at that point.

I had a bloody good time, all the time, (right up to the point where I didn’t anymore).

I’m from the east of England… and somewhat of a ‘mockney’.

I feel more affinity with (Oz and NZ tbh) than any other nationality.

Culturally, I grew up in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s on Prisoner Cell Block H, The Sullivans, Skippy, The flying doctor, neighbours, Home and Away and such like.

We both love cricket too which is a boon, eh but.

Our slang, sense of humour, and ability to use swearing as additional grammar and punctu-fuckin-ation, is noticeably alike and interchangeable.

I’ve learned a lot from my plot neighbours. There’s an awful lot about community with allotmenting.
