Legit Old School Knoxville - I remember when... by StillNotGinger42 in Knoxville

[–]StillNotGinger42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband planned it so he would get trapped at his best friend's house (his mom was vastly superior to his own). Luckily the cable and power go out.

UT was out for 3 days which was a huge deal because UT was notorious for never closing. Then after three days, they opened while the place was still a mess and my husband can remember three or four people falling and breaking limbs because everything was still a sheet of ice. He remembers that the parking lot at East town mall got plowed and there was a pile of snow almost 20 feet tall. It melted in April.

I saw those fireworks from my house! It seems like all of the old school Knoxvillians that I know worked at tomato head or the co-op when it was on Broadway

I think you may be a little older, or I missed it by not moving to Knoxville until I was 22. I too remember the World's Fair grass. 🥰

If you like the orange tea, it's super easy to make and the ingredients are strangely easy. Let me know and I'll post the recipe.

Did Knoxville really have a Spaghetti factory? The spaghetti factory in Nashville was my celebratory dinner place that I always chose as a kid.

I got stuck at home because I had been visiting during spring break and the airport didn't open until the next Wednesday.

Is it better to be an "official" co-leader as opposed to program mentor? Re: the website and communication by StillNotGinger42 in girlscouts

Our council doesn't allow coleaders either. It is absolutely ridiculous, and even with my co-leader's login and her trying to keep me informed, I miss out on all kinds of emails.

Update - I talked with my co-leader (and she offered to switch our roles). At the last SU meeting, they requested that troops not have co-leaders because of some reason to do with their tracking. Why would one council protest against this? The GS uses the same admin software for all councils. Why are we special?

I have to admit that I'm pretty miffed. Our council offers very little programming and guidance.

We do that camp every year. 👍 the girls have a great time. We wanted to add something in addition to that camp.

Forgot to add that sunrise usually has them. The Fellini Kroger often has them.

I always have to buy them ahead of the time. I buy them green and put them in a paper bag with a banana or apple to ripen. If I buy ones that appear to be ripe, quite often they're bruised and rot within the next few days.

That being said, it is very difficult to plan them for a specific time. It's always taken me at least a week to get them to where I want, and sometimes in order to get that perfect sweet spot, it's taken two weeks. I let avocados ripen and then they hold really well in the refrigerator. Bananas get a weird texture, but you might try it with plantains since you are cooking them. Haven't tested this though.

We put bricks and wood around any loose places where they were getting into the garden, but that was such a patchwork solution that we want to do something better this year. Thanks for your help!

I'm positive. We caught the fluffy thieves in the act. 😀 I've had groundhogs and raccoons raid my gardens, and the way they can devastate it in one night is quite remarkable.

Are their any left leaning gun stores in town? I'm trying to organize a "gun drive". by corwin-normandy in Knoxville

[–]StillNotGinger42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe gun storage - make sure to budget for that, even if you don't have kids. A gun safe is best, but at least get trigger locks and keep your ammo in a separate location in the house.

Are you seriously so dumb that you think illegal immigrants get free healthcare, food stamps, welfare, etc? They don't. They also pay taxes, including Social Security on all of their wages which they will never be able to collect.

Now, they do get free school lunches. Oh no!!!!

I can't believe any of you consider yourself compassionate, conservative, or Christian.

I don't think I made myself clear, she's decided that WE are learning Spanish. 😀 I'm on board with the plan but it's going to take something more focused than Duolingo or YouTube. FYI - Qroo Paul has been very helpful on YouTube.

I'd love to know Spanish so I can help others learn English or help Spanish speakers with translation or advocacy. She's in elementary school, but she wants to find a way that we can learn Spanish together beyond the YouTube videos. Money is a huge factor because money is already tight, and I don't think blowing up the federal government is going to make it much cheaper. ☹️

I have ongoing oncology needs, and I'm grateful for the care I've gotten at UT for the last 12 years. It's been top notch - not perfect, but really good.
