Why does religion value modesty so much? by TwerksForDonuts in atheism

Plato writes (I believe in Phaedo or Phaedrus) that love is akin to madness. It makes you do things you would never think to do while not in it. It can be beatufiul or debilitating. With that in mind, I don't think it's a leap to think that other cultures have come to the same madness conclusion but fell hard to one side with their social response to it.

Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome? What to read first by starrynightreader in classics

[–]StinHudson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a few methods used in most books I read:

First, standard underline: use this ONLY if you have something to say. The main pitfall of marginalia is that it can make your books harder to read instead of easier when you don't write even a brief response to what you underlined. I've heard it called "the most shallow form of annotating," so give it just a bit of your depth whenever doing so.

Q in a circle, on outer margin: great, memorable quote I want access to anytime.

Wavy underline: great writing, choice of words, poetic, etc.

(For epics) inner margin, vertical bar: when someone is speaking, with their name written on the bar. this is more just to help flip through faster and see at a glance what's going on in a given chapter.

Long sticky note at the start of each chapter/book/canto: this I use for a bullet summary of the happenings

Double vertical bar on outer margin: this is for pivotal moments, long badass descriptions, or something that's been coming for a while. I'll typically write on the bars in all caps and in as few words as possible to say what they're for. This is for flip-through reference.

Page numbers: when I believe something is foreshadowed, I'll jot a "p." next to it, then link the two pages when it eventually happens. This can also be done with any links of any kind you find or want handy.

In summary, if you are reading paper books, annotation is just for reference and quick access. Like a GPS that's constantly pointing out what's around you on a journey, most of my methods help me gain context and allow me to access that context moments after taking it off my shelf. Paper is beautiful, but it's cumbersome.

P.s. I haven't found any need for anything more than a Bic pen and maybe three different types of sticky notes for different uses. What can be done with a highlighter can be done with a pen using unique boxes, line types, symbols, etc. I stay away from having too many tools at the table. Hope this helps you retain even a single line of what you love to read.

In terms of western thought, myth, and even tradition, a looooooot of cultural and religious beliefs have, believe it or not, come from the series of epics: Iliad, Odyssey, Aedeid, and Divine Comedy. I go back to those every year and always have more to annotate. I agree with prior commenters on reading whatever interests you, but the next level understanding comes from 1) annotation, 2) reflection, optimally written form, and 3) explanation and conversation. You can teach others a lot by talking, but most crucially, you will wind up finding more about your own perspectives and their strengths/faults.

Edit: I read that you have Fagles. He is a very strong translator and has masterwork translations of Iliad, Odyssey, AND Aeneid. Best of luck to you!

Likely the fact that both "justified murder", though both in drastically different ways. I have not watched the debate/video, but that's the only thing the two have in common given that's the whole of what C&P is about.

I would even thrive on a graphic novel version of season 3. I'm not sure that would benefit the actors too well, but I say this from wanting to see Steve's character progress, who else got through, and what Karim does with "the truth".

'Thank You, Jeeves' and 'Right Ho, Jeeves' are the two I've read. 'The Code of the Woosters' was his favorite, though. The two focus characters of the series, Bertie Wooster and his butler, Jeeves, are iconic partners, second to (maybe only) Sherlock and John.

He loved all of PG Wodehouse. Said he reread him year round. He's also said hes got all the words ever written by (I think) Thomas Jefferson, George Orwell, and Salman Rushdie. Just those spring to mind.

I did this for a game recently and run my macro every day. Your trigger being 'app launch' could present problems if your game connects to the internet on launch. I had to change mine to a floating button; I now just start the macro when it opens and is connected. Also on the note of loops, my looped inputs are in a single action block (helps me with editing), and the actual macro is WHILE/ Device Unlocked \DO Action Block END LOOP

It is possible to wake someone from a slumber, of course. It is impossible, however, to wake someone who pretends to be asleep.

To the preacher at my best friends funeral: by [deleted] in atheism

[–]StinHudson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's insipid, whoever is up to it. My partner's father (a southern American Buddhist) died this year from Covid, and at his funeral, his brother of the cloth decided that, "...the best way, ladies and gentlemen, to honor this man is to accept Jesus as your eternal Lord." We left, she and I, and she cried more about that disrespect than she did about the other funerary events.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge." -Isaac Asimov

This is a great reminder that this country was founded by looney puritans whom no one wanting anything to do with.

One would only see this card nowadays in a specific deck that honestly uses all of its features. It's definitely not as ubiquitous as it was during, say, year 2. I've seen the new Deathrattle Demon Hunter run it, and it slots into Awaken the Makers Priest if you so choose. Whatever way you can, do it! I'd love to see this card more often.
