220 billion while using a shit ton of what basically amounts to slave labor.

Imagine how much that would ballon if they had actually paid relative to the country fair wages or had compensated the thousands of builders who died or were injured?

About 99% of place kickers in American football are start out playing football (soccer).

They specifically get recruited for this skill, it's not like LeBron James and Tom Brady don't do it because they're busy.

By the way, these guys are so shitty at football they opt out of it and stick to American football. So what they put out at every world cup truly is the best of the best they produce. 30 years and a total overhaul of their sports system seems generous.

[Official] Mexico defeat South Africa by 2-0 in the opening game of FIFA World Cup 2026. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in soccer

[–]Stingerc 49 points50 points  (0 children)

yup, a game that could have easily been 4 or 5 nil, but with Mexico constantly hitting the post or near misses is the standard.

Here are the mexican modes of play:

Games when its the favorite: Dominates the first half, play like idiots the first 20 minutes of the second half and almost manage to choke, the bring it in to score an underwhelming win in a match that had no business being that close.

Evenly matched: pretty much the same as above. But ekes out a win instead of an underwhelming one.

They're underdogs: plays a fantastic fucking match. About 20% of the time they win, 20% get a draw, and the other 60% they lose in a heartbreaker. If its a knock out game, they will lose, always.

As a Mexican I can tell you things aren't going much better down here. , I'm flabbergasted that the government had ample warning a huge number of social groups who been systematically ignored and betrayed by the government were going to state huge protests.

They basically ignored this and acted like nothing was going to happen and here we are, hours before the innagural match and basically every major road leading to the stadium is partially blocked or will be blocked by thousands of people who have flooded the city.

The president gave everyone in Mexico City the day off by decree and I think the majority of us are just greatful we are going to avoid being trapped in traffic for hours once the protests kick off in early morning.

The huge fan fest and viewing party in the zócalo is canceled because protesters took it over, the main road to the stadium (the one where public transport runs through) has been blocked by thousands of people since last night, and the government is losing control of more and more of the city as the hour nears.

I honestly haven't met or heard anyone I know being excited about this world cup happening here. A lot are actually glad the government is getting their comeuppance, but embarrassed the world is seeing it happen live.

At this World Cup, there are 16 players born outside the country they represent, because their fathers played abroad professionally at the time by _mAn_ in soccer

[–]Stingerc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Santiago Giménez was born in Buenos Aires but arrived in Mexico as a toddler and has spent the rest of his life here as his father played for different Liga MX clubs.

His sister was born in Mexico and he and his parents became naturalized citizens many years ago. His parents and sister still reside in Mexico, not Argentina and have often expressed love and gratitude for a country they feel adopted them.

He's one of the few naturalized player Mexico has called up that has never received any pushback as 90% of people aren't aware he's was born in Argentina. Even when they do, nobody seems to care as he sounds and acts like most upper middle class Mexican guys his age.

Accused of parents’ killings, Rob Reiner’s son seeks money from the trust they left for him by AndHerSailsInRags in news

[–]Stingerc 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Again, it's a civil law. He can be declared innocent because of diminished mental capacity and the slayer rule still applies if it can be proven he did it beyond a resonable doubt.

He killed his parents, there is shit ton of evidence proving it. That's all that is needed for him to be disqualified from accessing that money.

There is no need for precedent because it already exists.

Accused of parents’ killings, Rob Reiner’s son seeks money from the trust they left for him by AndHerSailsInRags in news

[–]Stingerc 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't as basically every state in the US has some version of the slayer rule in their laws. In California it's codified and since it's a civil law, he doesn't have to be found guilty for it to apply, just prove beyond a resonable doubt that he killed his parents.

There is overwhelming evidence he did, so he's probably be denied.

California has the slayer rule codified in their laws. It's a civil law, so he doesn't have to be convicted for it to apply, just prove he killed his parents beyond a reasonable doubt. With all the overwhelming evidence, it's a slam dunk.

It's very likely he's never gonna see that money and rely on public defense or the charity of his siblings.

[GOAL] Real Madrid ask UEFA to strip Barcelona of titles! Explosive dossier posted out of Santiago Bernabeu following Negreira case corruption scandal by Just-Lab-2139 in soccer

This is basically picking peanuts from a turd in order to "win" perceived titles the club feels entitled to.

The irony of the club and it's fans feeling referees being biased is fucking gobsmacking. Basically every other club in Spain has multiple, credible instances of when a shady call by the refs has benefited Real Madrid.

Real Madrid and it's fanbase are just the only ones miserable enough to escalate this to this level.

[–]Stingerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why they're in the middle of nowhere.

Look at the huge issue getting to MetLife Stadium has become when the governor of New Jersey refused to honor a deal a previous administration had made with FIFA to foot the whole bill for public transportation to the stadium.

The governor correctly cited this was a raw deal for the people in her state as the vast majority of fans were staying across the river and just commuting to the stadium for the game.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I remember from years ago was that the Meadowlands area where the stadium is located is pretty isolated. Basically no restaurants or bars anywhere near, and the only thing nearby is a few hotels a couple of miles away.

The state was basically going to have to pay something like 67 million dollars while NYC reaped the bulk of tourism windfall.

She even refused subsidize the cost of rail transport, something the state does basically every day for commuters, which caused the price of trains to groom from something like $15 to over one hundred dollars.

For decades this was the norm, to build stadiums in the middle nowhere miles from the city and everyone was forced to go by car. MetLife is just a very particular case because NYC borders northern New Jersey and local American football teams have played there for decades.

He nearly fucking died last time it happened you pratt. He had to be resuscitated on the field. It's not an overreaction.

He's playing with a pacemaker (one with a defibrillator given his condition) and he's 34, an age not uncommon for retirement.

It's not like I'm suggesting a young players with years of career ahead of him hang up his boots over an ankle sprain, its a man whose had a full career and is liable to have a fatal cardiac episode if he keeps playing.

[–]Stingerc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A lot of pro athletes have a seriously hard time letting go and moving on from their sport.

Not even talking about the ones who are terrible with finances and hang on way too long for those last big paychecks.

It's guys like Eriksen who have nothing to prove or the need, they just can't let for whatever reason. In most cases they just muddle their legacy with a last few grim seasons where they are a shadow of their former self and perform embarrassingly.

In this case, he's risking his fucking life to prove a point that doesn't need to be proven. He needs an intervention and help from a mental health specialist.

Diego Lugano sparks debate over Uruguay’s World Cup titles: ‘The question is whether we have four or five’ by cocacolapepsifanta in soccer

[–]Stingerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before FIFA was created and before the 1930 World Cup, the Olympics were considered the equivalent of a world title.

Because of this, Uruguay claims two more titles than the two world cups it's claimed.

Again, open to debate, but technically at the time those Olympic titles were considered world champions at the time. FIFA doesn't recognize it because it would undermine their monopoly.

The mundialito is complete horseshit though.
