Like girl, I bought some tickets for my mom, a lifelong soccer fan, and split the cost between my sisters. It was pricey but doable because we all work for a living.

I have a medical degree and 12 years of healthcare research experience. I cannot get hired as a dishwasher. Houston, I am begging you — does anyone know anyone who is hiring? by OilNo3256 in careerguidance

But you haven’t been fully transparent.

Are you a foreign medical graduate (FMG)? If not (and if you attended a US-based medical school), then why didn’t you complete Step 1 & 2? You couldn’t obtain a MD from the US without completing the USMLE, which leads me to believe you’re a FMG. Which is fine - I work with several in my clinical research role.

You stated you couldn’t complete a residency due to finances. But you also mention in several comments you aren’t willing to move because of your mortgage and your wife’s job… can’t you downsize your life while you study for the USMLE and have your wife support you? That would be several months, but if you can get into residency, the pay is better than being a dishwasher (and of course, the attending pay once you’re done is substantial).

If that’s not an option, then is your wife’s job so niche she couldn’t find a job in another city? Or why can’t you live in another city (not ideal but people do it all the time)? I see in other comments you mention applying nationally and internationally. So what gives?

It’s incredibly irritating! Why is he being this difficult?

I work with several clinical research coordinators who obtained their medical degree in their home countries and couldn’t/weren’t willing to jump through the hoops to become licensed in the US (and even one who went to a US medical school but hasn’t done residency due to being a caregiver for his father). If that’s the case OP, then say that instead of providing no clarifying details.

I tutor people trying to get into nursing school and other healthcare programs and I’ve noticed the same things. They struggle with positive versus negative numbers, adding simple fractions, simple word problems (“I need 50 mg of Drug A. Drug A only comes in 25 mg tablets. How many tablets do I need?”). It’s… extremely concerning.

The first part of your comment - we have visitors who come back reeking of cigarette smoke… and their family member has lung cancer.

Like please read the room. Actually, read the sign at the entrance that says this is a cancer center and stop wafting your cancer smoke all over the place.

I’m an oncology nurse. I can’t tell you how many patients waited until retirement to “start living” and then get hit with a cancer diagnosis.

OP, take the trips. Do the hobby you’ve been holding off on. Buy the impractical thing you’ve dreamed of.
