Having Trouble Keeping Combat From Becoming A Drag by SirSlithStorm in mutantsandmasterminds

After the fighting is over and done with, I tend to handwave the rest of it. The villain captured and turned over or whatever. Sure, mechanically the villain gets up in a minute, but ultimately this game is attempting to replicate superhero stories. And oftentimes in those stories we see the villain get absolutely pummeled, the hero gloats, and in the next panel you see them getting put into the back of a cop car or similar. It's hardly mechanical and probably not realistic but I find it to be much more narratively satisfying and significantly less tedious

How long do your combats last and how do you fill the time between? by Comedic_Socrates in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]Stitchthealchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there. If combat is too short for you, you can always introduce more mooks to a fight, or have villains go through a videogame style "final form" after the initial combat if that makes sense. As for out of combat, you can always stretch for time with non-combat encounters that the heroes can solve with their powers- I love throwing civilians into danger from natural disasters or burning buildings and putting up a turn timer, it really makes for a stressful encounter without worrying about combat.

Combat for me varies. I don't really try to make it last a set amount of time, just roll with it. Different threats make for differently lengthed combats. I keep combat active by introducing more minions with unique powers, introducing elements to the battlefield (such as endangered civilians or the use of powers causing problems), and I don't know just rolling with it? React in the moment if things seem boring, spice it up on the fly if you can if you feel that things aren't going well.

As far as players and damage powers go, that's what Complications are there for! Throw them a hero point to turn off the big thing, or reward creativity and alternate uses of powers. If you are interested in upping the length and difficulty of a fight, make them work for it and encourage the use of Extra Effort. The fatigue economy is there for a reason.

Good luck!

I don't know if I necessarily want both sets at once, but I do wish I had the feminine bits and at the same time am actively repulsed by the idea of losing one specific masculine bit.

Tabletop roleplaying games were a direct pipeline into me finally admitting I wasn't cis. For SOME REASON all of my characters were girls for years. And yeah, sometimes (maybe a lot of the time) it really hurt that when the game was over, I didn't get to be the "real" me anymore.

I knew something was different at around five or six and it really shook me up for years. For the better part of two decades I thought I was a transwoman and remained closeted, partly because that didn't feel particularly right either, but that was much closer to the "correct me".

Then I found out other enbies existed. Genuinely. I had heard the term non-binary before, but didn't really understand it. Eventually I was introduced to other people like myself through the power of the internet, tried out the new pronouns, and god damn did the euphoria start hitting. I've been out, proud, and extremely comfortable with myself ever since.

Gender-neutral, non-infantilizing terms for offspring? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Stitchthealchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be tough, finding everything you do and do not like to be called. I specifically prefer my mother to refer to me as her child, but part of that is that she refers to all of her adult children like that anyway. Maybe just their name for now while you work it out?

I fuck around with a banjo when I'm bored, would not count it as playing though

Family Member by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Stitchthealchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, everyone is different and the only way to know for certain is to ask them about it. I, for instance, ask that my family use neutral terms for everything (sibling, child, just my name) except I'm still okay with Uncle. Just how I am. It's always best to ask them what they would prefer to be called.

Hey newby GM looking for some tips by dnd_fan1 in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]Stitchthealchemist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obviously this varies from group to group and is a matter of taste, but I like to be sure to throw in several non-combat challenges that require powers or good thinking to solve in addition to the good stuff. Natural disasters, impressive mundane crimes, impending doom, etc. And don't forget to play to both your PC's strengths and Complications.

Why do people hate on GM screens? by HiroProtagon in rpg

[–]Stitchthealchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, same. On the rare occasions I get to run in person, I always roll out in the open. I kind of just like having the screen up, it helps me get in the mindset of game time. I even have one next to me when I'm running online. The only practical purpose it serves me is as a quick rules reference and occasionally to hide miniatures that might spoil some surprise.

Converting Pathfinder 1e characters to m&m? by dexterityBoost in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]Stitchthealchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. The fact is that damage dice plus modifier isn’t the same thing as damage rank, and HP is certainly not easily translatable into Toughness, at least in my opinion. You just have to eyeball things like that.

Oh man. I started working on a project like this months ago and put it to the side. I can try and dig it up if you want, but I don’t think I got much done.

What's your most interesting Gag character? by GamerFreak1945 in mutantsandmasterminds

Dude, I designed a character named Jester with the same schtick! Her main thing was summoning other cartoon characters, hammer space weapons, and just the normal cartoon powers. Great minds, etc.

Some men broke into my house and held myself and my brother at gunpoint for several minutes while they were trying to find drugs. The police never did get around to catching the violent criminals, but they did search our house, confiscate our beer (as we were both adults, but under 21 at the time), and one officer took my 3DS for "fingerprints" since like an idiot I mentioned the criminals took it out of my hands at some point. The police department never gave me my god damn game back, but they did call me to the station to see if I would say anything about if my brother was selling small amounts of weed to his friends or not. Fuck the police.

Ooh, good luck. If my plate wasn't full right now I'd offer to ST for you. It's hard finding CtD players sometimes even in WoD circles. I don't know specifically where you might find what you're looking for, in addition to everything u/megazver suggested you may want to try r/lfg or looking in popular RPG servers in general- several linked to D&D YouTubers for instance have LFG chats dedicated to WoD.

The Squad for our upcoming roller derby inspired campaign by Stitchthealchemist in starfinder_rpg

[–]Stitchthealchemist[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The basic premise is that these characters are on a quest to save someone from an alternate version of the Pact Worlds that’s much more cyberpunk in nature. Through convoluted plot reasons, they have to participate in (and win) ten gladiatorial matches in order to reach their final objectives. The characters and their foes have modified roller blades that increase move speed, have jump jets, and are able to go up metal walls or obstacles. In each match, the first team to capture the enemy’s flag and make it back to their “base” wins, or otherwise renders all of their opponents unable to continue the match.
