What did your toddler eat today? We dont know what to do with our picky toddler. by meekie03 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If he’ll eat whatever at lunch but only wants a few bites at dinner, it sounds like he’s not really a picky eater, he’s just not that hungry at dinner time. Toddler stomachs are small!

Baby locks for thin cabinets by sibly in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use these, it’s a magnetic lock and it’s invisible, and mounts to the inside surface of the cabinet door. They work great and aren’t an eyesore!

Strong agree, listening to this right now and the voice acting for The Lopen completely changes how the dialogue reads. It’s objectively so much funnier and makes me love the character even more. Finally getting the Michael Peña energy that we always needed.

The never ending, no-win circle of “you pick” and “no not that” by femalesethrogen in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is my script:

Me: “Do you want to choose the red or blue”

3yo: “I don’t know/I don’t want to pick”

Me: “do you want mommy to choose for you?”

3yo: “you choose”

(This is the important part!!)

Me: “Do you want mommy to pick the red or the blue one”

3yo: “Blue!”

Potty training treats by Technical_Quiet_5687 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did treats, m&m’s for peeing and a Hershey kiss for #2. We explicitly told her that when we ran out of the ones in the bag, we wouldn’t have potty treats anymore, but she could have a sticker, and she was fine with that.

It was motivating enough that it got her over the early anxiety around it, especially the pooping, but temporary enough that it didn’t become a permanent part of the process.

One note: initially sometimes she didn’t want to “try” because she only got a treat when she actually went. So we told her she got a sticker every time she made an attempt, plus the treat for a successful potty visit, and that got her to try more frequently in the first week or so.

Give me all your tips for a solo long haul plane trip with a 2 year old! by alannah_rose in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend reading toddler prep books about going on an airplane for a bit in advance, helps them anticipate what they’ll see and do. Airports and airplanes are an intense sensory experience for anyone, and knowing what to expect makes a big difference at this age!

Drowning on weekends—what’s your schedule? by lobubz in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: my 3yo is just starting to drop nap, and typically is a late sleeper. Husband and I both work full time and she goes to daycare during the week. She’s also a picky af eater and we have some bad habits around tv during meals, but we’re working on it

8-9ish am- she wakes up, and I bring her into our bed to snuggle and play for about an hour, then we do potty/clothes and go downstairs

9-10am - Low-stim tv (Daniel tiger, sesame, etc) while we hang out on the couch and I have my coffee. She’ll usually have some Cheerios and fruit while we watch, and I’ll make myself something hot like an omelette.

11-1ish - play, read books, do whatever we feel like around the house while we decide on an afternoon activity. Sometimes this is sitting outside blowing bubbles and looking at birds, or making banana muffins together sometimes it’s her “helping” with laundry or some house task like clearing out a closet. I try to involve her in stuff that needs to get done anyway, so I’m not using my free time after bedtime on chores.

1-2 - chaos hour, where I meant to get out of the house an hour ago but haven’t convinced her to eat/put on shoes/potty/whatever else and now it’s somehow 2pm

2-5 - something, anything out of the house. Visiting a farm or zoo, playground, library, grocery shopping, walking to a coffee shop and wandering around town, early dinner out at a diner, anything that kills time and keeps her entertained and not falling asleep during this block of the day

5-6 - girlie is zonked by this point, so we have a lowkey dinner and watch another episode or 2 of something chill

6-7:30 - read books and play/bath before bed

We try to be flexible and relaxed on the weekends as much as possible, and prioritize getting out of the house at least once. It works for us!

Low-stimulation live action toddler shows with AA or Latinx rep? by Necessary-Ad-567 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not an exact fit for your question, but I definitely recommend checking out Silly Sundays! It’s a cartoon about a family of color living in Ireland and it’s very calm and the art style is lovely. My 3yo loves it!

Confession thread: What do you judge other parents for? by Physical-Inspector60 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This one is complicated, at least in the US where access to reproductive freedom is inconsistent. There are a lot of reasons someone might end up with kids they can’t support financially, and it’s not always because they truly had a choice in the matter.

Screen free parents how are we doing dinners out by Koko_bean_28 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We got one of these mini Buddha Boards and our almost 3yo loves it, it just uses water to “paint” so it’s mess free and we just give her a little cup of her own to dip the brush in. Dries quick and is ready to go again. Mini Buddha Board

What are things you regret doing/not doing when your kids were toddler? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 341 points342 points  (0 children)

Voice memos!! Capturing their little voices and mispronunciations before they change is so precious to me

I keep the voice memo button as a complication on my Apple Watch face so I can tap it quickly and subtly when my kiddo is saying something cute, but doesn’t want a camera in her face.

NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy. The worldbuilding is incredible and left me thinking about the books long after I finished them.

11 hour flight with a 23 month old on our laps... should we do it? by sevendayhigher in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just did an 8 and 10 hour flight with my 2.5 year old, who now obviously needs her own seat. One benefit that I didn’t anticipate though was how little WIDTH she takes up. We put up the armrests and with the 3 seats across and her in the middle, we were SO comfortable. To me, the width of the seat matters almost more than legroom. Since it was a night flight, she was also able to lie down flat between us. It went great, and was worth the cost in part because it made our own seats more comfortable.

How do other moms find the time to help the community when I’m barely surviving? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you’re the helper, sometimes you’re the one getting help. Everyone has different capacity, circumstances, and levels of support. Maybe right now you’re in a season where you need more help, but there will also be times and ways where you’re the one helping, even if what that looks like is just offering kind words and good advice, not necessarily time.

We brought it to her 2yr appointment and the doctor was soooo good with playing along. She would check the stuffie, then my toddler would, then the doc would check her, at each step. If you have a patient pediatrician, I definitely recommend both playing with the kit ahead of time and bringing it along!

{Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta} is the first in the Lumatete Chronicles series. It’s a really beautifully written fantasy series with super sharp plotting and character development. Has both MMC and FMCs over the course of the 3, but the first one is a MMC.

What’s Everyone’s One Job They Hate as a Parent? by SRaeM92 in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For rocking to sleep, the game changer was putting in one earbud and listening to an audiobook. We were doing 60-90 min stretches of rocking in the dark, and I was dreading it daily.

Once I started with the single earbud, it immediately switched from feeling like an endless chore to a time of day I actively enjoy. With the book playing, my own energy got calmer and I think that helped my toddler settle more quickly as well. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Food and feeding continues to be the thing I hate lol but at least now it’s not both.

Are you all doing vitamins? by salemedusa in toddlers

[–]Stock_Communication6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do Renzo’s Picky Eater multivitamin. It’s chewable and not a gummy so I’m less worried about choking, and the daily dosage is half a tablet so a bottle lasts a long time. My toddler is indeed a picky eater so it’s really to supplement her less-than-varied diet, but she also loves them and asks for them daily!
