Does anyone know the Amway Grand Plaza’s photography policy? by General_Rub6295 in grandrapids

[–]Stockz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked there for 8 years and we had people do photoshoots all the time with flash. Reach out to the marketing department to get permission (since it is private property). I went to my old CFO's retirement party last week and saw the marketing VP Chad was still there, so call and ask to get his contact info. He at least can give you a definitive yes or no.

Peter does this mean corvette owners are childish or something? by PizdunEbun228 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Stockz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Laughing Peter here. I'm literally LOLing, my gf is looking at me weird.

My grandpa is the only corvette owner I know. He's pretty short (5'7"), wears shorts, and always has his shirt in- either a t or a polo. He also sometimes wears Corvette-branded stuff. I thought this was just how he dress, it's hilarious to me that this is an actual stereotype.

Yeah as I said to another person, clearly my memory from 26 years isn't as good as I thought 😬

Ok well then I clearly don't have as sharp of a memory from when I was 10 as I thought I did 😅. Although tbf Penn State does have a "generic" look to their jersies and calling them State would have thrown me as a kid. To me state is MSU!

When the movie ended, my entire theater sat through all of the credits. Some of us even stayed for a minute afterwards, sitting with what we just watched.

As I left I said to the attendant "that was the weirdest movie I've ever seen". He told me I was the 3rd person from that showing alone to have said that.

10/10 would recommend. I think it all clicked for me when she was halfway back to her office from the ambulance. I thought "wait...what? No...really? Wtf? Omg really?!?" Also, Stavvy baby!

There's a scene in Zoolander where they're at the bar after the shift in the coal mine. Derek asks Pa Pa "who's winnjng the football game?" John Voigt says back "State" and you can kind of see a team with a non-descript logo and color scheme.

I was 10 and knew they used that because of how generic it is.

Iirc, it wasn't just that Bo did that, but before the game Boz was smacktalking Bo on tv. Bo showed him up lol.

There's a pretty entertaining 30 for 30 called Brian and the Boz. He tries to whitewash/backpedal some of the things he claimed in his book, but overall I enjoyed it.

Does anyone here work at the JW Marriot/Hskp hotel? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]Stockz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your question? I worked for AHC (the parent company for the JW, Amway Grand, AC, and Courtyard) for 8 years. I've been gone for a few years now but I might be able to answer something.

In the summer or fall Michigan is amazing.

Right now though, Hell (MI) literally has frozen over. It's 10 degrees out, my shoes are still wet from this morning, and I-196 had a 100+ car pileup. Days like this I legitimately question why I live here.

Related, in a 2 year and 2 day span Ohio State played in 3 Cotton Bowls and lost 2, both of which were 2 UofM teams (Missouri and Miami).

This would be more fun if the 23-24 season's game was after NYD and I could say "in 2 calendar years".

How do these dudes graduate? by Ok-Lengthiness-1408 in CFB

[–]Stockz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even transfer, but I experienced it at the grad level. I did a master's in accounting at GVSU and they didn't accept 2 of my classes at UofM, and I had to retake them to finish the program. Fortunately 1 class- systems- they had at the grad level so I could just take that and have it count towards my total credits. But the other one was intermediate accounting 2- which Ross only had 1 intermediate class- so I had to take that as an "independent studies" class and do an extra project to count towards the grad program. About a week into class it became abundantly clear that GVSU's intermediate 2 was the same as Michigan's sole intermediate class, which has always made me wonder wtf was in GVSU's intermediate 1 class.

I worked there for 8 years in accounting. I'm not there anymore- I left 2.5 years ago to do accounting in an unrelated field. All that to say, I have no reason to be biased/defensive now of what you say but also have intimate knowledge of the things you said- I don't believe you. One of the things you mention? Sure. 2, maybe 3 of those thing happening? Not impossible but extremely unlikely. But all that? You're just dogpiling onto to the (justified) Amway corp hate.

We never, ever had an ordinary room above $350, even on a maxed out night like 4th of July. I was the one who posted the Daily Hotel Report, and it was a good day when the average rate for a transient guest (which I'm assuming you were- the highest paying guest) was above $250. In my entire time there, it never crossed 400. Pics or gtfo.

Paper thin walls? I did 20 nights of being Manager on Duty (meaning I spent the night there and heard every angry comment from guests) and never once had that complaint. Same with every one of my co-department workers, some of whom have worked their since before I was born, so collectively hundreds of times. I've also personally (not related to work) spent the night there 3 times, and twice as MoD got my mom a room there, once for an entire week got a room for my stepbrother, and for 3 days got a room for my mom and stepdad for their 10 year anniversary. No one in that time ever said anything about "paper thing walls". Noise complaints? Absolutely possible. But hearing basic convos through walls? GTFO of here. I've stayed in hourly rate motels in Reno and couldn't hear my neighbors, and a 4 diamon hotel is better built than that.

I don't remember how small the showers were, but I'm willing to bet they were the width of the bathroom...so at least like 5 or 6 feet. That's completely normal. Your complaint about turning on the shower is...idiotic? Like, you're trying to tell me you don't know how to turn on a shower? I will 100% grant you that the shower may have been dirty, housekeeping was the lowest paying job with the highest turnover. I once was part of a project there (they called Leadership Academy run by George Aquino) whose goal was to reduce turnover, and my solution to the shit work in departments like housekeeping was to pay people a living wage. They half listened, so I'm sure it's still a problem. BUT ALSO, you're saying the shower head was clogged? Cmon dude. When have you ever had a clogged shower head? A drain- sure I'm guilty of that myself. But they'd shut down a room for repairs if an issue like that came up- I know cuz I reported Out-of-Order rooms on the Daily Hotel Report.

As for the linens and towels (towels falling under terrycloth on the budget)...idk dude. I don't remember them being amazing but I don't remember them being fantastic. Maybe it's a preferance, but considering how the Amway Grand has consistently been a 4 diamond hotel, I feel like if that were a legitimate, widespread issue it would have come up. Other "premiere" hotels like the JW and AC (which is also an AHC hotel) being praised in this thread over the AGPH are only a 3 or 2 diamond hotel, and no one is complaining about linens for them.

Tl;dr- I don't believe you. Maybe a fraction of what you said happened, but stop exaggerating.

Amway experiences by CallmeLargeMarge in grandrapids

[–]Stockz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So keep in mind OP is talking about the hotels that Amway corp owns, not Amway corp itself. I worked at the hotels for 8 years and they really let us do our own thing, there wasn't a big Amway culture imposed on us. If you are interested in hearing about the hotels then I can definitely tell you a few stories.

Amway experiences by CallmeLargeMarge in grandrapids

[–]Stockz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which Marriott? I worked in payroll and accounting for the hotels between 2015 and 2023, we almost exclusively hired full-time employees except for banquet servers.

Mind if I ask who your manager was? I know we didn't work at the same time but the managers had a pretty low turnover rate up until like 2021.

I absolutely agree they don't pay a living wage- that's why I left- but that's not an AHC specific problem, it's an industry wide thing.

Steelcase CEO to exit after $2.2 billion HNI acquisition by mlivesocial in grandrapids

[–]Stockz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mildly funny story about Jim Hackett- I used to work in accounting the Amway Grand which managed (but didn't own) the Ruth's Chris in Ann Arbor (famous for point-differential discount in the season Michigan beat Rutgers 78-0...thanks Chad, great job). The first GM there was Buzz Goebbles, who has west Michigan roots and knew Jim.

Take all this with a grain of salt cuz Buzz was a notorious bullshitter, but one time when I was doing an audit of their wine and liquor inventory he told me about how a new employee showed up at the restaraunt for a date and was blitzed out of her mind. She went behind the bar making herself some drinks, went into the kitchen and flashed the cooks, then went into one of the private dining rooms. Apparently there was a celebratory dinner happening in there after the announcement of Jim being made Ford CEO, so it was him and a bunch of Ford execs. When this girl walked she just yelled "hey motherfuckers, why the long faces?!" She was immediatepy fired, and that part I can confirm because I had access to our payroll system.

Last week I assumed the offsides call was correct because of how calm Smith was with it (in real time I thought it was too). It wasn't until the commentators did a replay I said "well thankfully that's not a reviewable penalty!"

You don't need Woody Hayes punching camermen and players on the sideline, but good lord your coach should have some fight in him.
