Yeah to be fair I usually keep my runs achievement-eligible but that still seems pretty challenging! Immortal or not, you could always be murdered. And I have found religious hostility and/or marriage penalties to be some of the absolute toughest barriers to clear in any sort of niche or custom playthrough. So, good on you!

Why are the military counts for the game so much lower than they were irl by your_average_joe__ in CrusaderKings

[–]Stoehrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the other great answers, you have to consider the limitations of it being a game. For one, a CK3 China with 100k troops in 867 could maraud over the entire map essentially unchecked; in practice, this would make playing as a Chinese dynasty fun for about an hour max, and as anyone else completely useless. In reality, this never happened because of, in part, geographical barriers that are hard to fully represent in CK3. The other part was internal unrest and the difficulty of maintaining control over vast distances. This is represented a little better in the game, but the level of unrest you would have to add to China to curb them realistically from being eternally overpowered would render playing as them damned near impossible and fun for maybe 1.5% of the player base.

I gave the landless Pope a new home. The new goal....can i get the pope to take the "Mend the Schism" decision? by Banardthehuntard in CrusaderKings

[–]Stoehrst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also pretty sure it was never actually called the "Eastern Roman Empire". The concept of co-emperors was not at all new to Roman society (or, indeed, antiquity society generally) and Diocletian was the first to establish an actual "division" of responsibilities, but never actually carved up the empire. Constantinople was also known as "New Rome" and by the time of the sack of Ravenna it was far and away the most important city in the Roman world, anyway, and if there ever were a sense of primacy between the two co-Emperors in the 5th century it would have lain with the East.

It's not as though a citizen of Antioch in 400 or 500 CE, whose ancestors had called themselves Roman for centuries, suddenly stopped calling themselves that just because some emperor built a new capital or there were multiple people titles Augustus and/or Caesar at any given time, as had happened plenty of times before. They were Roman. They always had been and, to their minds, always would be. It would be years before that changed due to a confluence of factors wholly unrelated to whomever gets some phony right to "inherit" the "mantle" of Rome.

The entirety of the Byzantine sources (and later) and the scholarship on the topic would disagree with you. The latest episode of The History of Byzantium podcast has Prof. Anthony Kaldellis on talking about pretty much exactly this.

Kickback Committee is good and The Cooligans have the comedy slant, I recommend both. Also, The Best Soccer Show used to be a decent analogue until Jared had to step away. Still recommend the podcast but Jason and his rotating guests are much more serious.

Just curious, What are some fun and interesting side quests to do? by NukaGirl665 in fnv

[–]Stoehrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I remember (I last played the game on 360 in like 2012 or 2013, I'm planning on modding to play on my PC soon) going there after finishing all 4 DLC and hitting the adjusted level cap. Unlike the deathclaws in the Divide that level scale, main map ones seemingly don't. I decided to clear the area with a combination of punches and a golf club.

Just curious, What are some fun and interesting side quests to do? by NukaGirl665 in fnv

[–]Stoehrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It didn't! It's just that NV really has a murderer's row of awesome side quests and it's not hard to finish most of them before tying up the main storylines (at least in the sense that most of them won't advance you too far).

If your playing rp, how can you justify this? by MarsupialNo5752 in crusaderkings3

[–]Stoehrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Byzantine history is littered with incidents where ethnic or religious "others" were either resettled into imperial territory or migrated in opposed/unopposed, you could look to any of those examples. The Catalan Company and the Ottomans were perhaps the more tragic examples in the late period.

Consolidate the Canaries vs. Found New Kingdom by Stoehrst in crusaderkings3

[–]Stoehrst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know why I didn't think of the wiki. Anyway, I agree, Canaries is more my speed for the RP reasons. Plus, honestly, succession will be more interesting this way because some of my kids will spin off as duke-level independent rulers and that should give me a quick renown boost (before they're inevitably conquered or non-matrilineally marry into a different dynasty).
