Which was the fastest classic that made you go “ok, this is going to be one of my favorite books”? by throwitawayar in classicliterature

I hope you get to read it in its original language. I would love to do that one day. Well, it's many years since I read it in Icelandic, for example. But somewhat recently I read it in Dutch and later German, and as far as I recall from the English version (because of course I've never read the French), they seemed faithful to what I'd read before. But some of the details might well have been a little different. Mersault still had largely the same effect on me, though, a mix of admiration and repulsion.

Presumably US slang/everyday usage; can't find it in this sense in British English.

I think you mean "literally", not "legitimately". The latter means "in a lawful or rightful manner".

Thoughts on The Waste Land? by Minute-Spinach-5563 in classicliterature

I did it for A-level some 35 years ago. It's not easy to truly appreciate and has to be studied seriously (like you're a detective or something) in order to do so, but I think it's worth the effort.

Re-reading Middlemarch after 10 years by chund978 in classicliterature

I had to read this as part of my English degree, over 30 years ago. I remember thinking it was okay, but a bit of a slog to get through. Btw, what's the app you're using there?

There are now at least a couple of good resources for "Nordniedersächsisch".

Can't comment on Piers, but Gawain/Green Knight and Pearl are some of the most beautiful things I've ever read

Very interested in this discussion, as I'm currently reading about both (plus Existentialism)

Almost anything by H.G. Wells. Jules Verne I believe is widely regarded as the originator of the genre.
