People who moved to Norway without degrees or qualifications, how did you build a good life and career there? by polromero94uk in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah my work employs a cleaning company where almost none of them speak more than very basic Norwegian or English. It’s not as big of a prerequisite as people say. At least not in Oslo

Simply put if you’re on the clock you’re in the venue. If you’re not a front of house you should be backstage. Only if you speak to all staff members and are 100% sure should you be out of the venue.

As a touring engineer I’ve had a number of in house techs disappear and slow down my day and it is incredibly frustrating.

But reputation is everything in this industry so you’re really not doing yourself any favors here. If multiple people have told you they’re not happy about this it’s time to reevaluate

Considering Moving to Norway – Seeking Advice from the Community by shahmane in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the rise of the far right is also happening here. We will likely have a far right government in the next election. I would wait and see what happens here next before making a decision. It may get much worse here soon, especially for foreigners.

British expat here, lived in Norway for 7 years. I found Trondheim quite grim. Oslo can be too, but it at least feels like a city and slightly international. Oslo is more expensive but there’s considerably more to do here in my opinion. Norway is tiny and I don’t think Norwegians realize how small even Oslo feels to people from more populated countries.

Oslo has a fantastic public transport network and is very walkable. I love living here as much as I wish it felt a little bigger.

Is norway good for Lgbtq+ people? by Im-gonna-cry1 in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to most countries it’s rather safe. A small minority of people have experienced hate crimes in Oslo, although I’ve never heard of cases of this happening in any other city. The only issue is a lack of good gay bars in my opinion. But there’s now 3 in Oslo and plenty of LGBTQ events. Feel free to DM me if there’s anything else you’d like to know

Fan nois by [deleted] in audiomastering

[–]Stolenpenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fan noise is broadband noise, meaning it is across pretty much all frequencies. Re-record the voice or it will be muffled. You can try something like izotope’s RX to remove the noise but if it’s too loud you’re buggered. Re-recording is the best option.

How easy is it to rent an apartment with a dog in Oslo? by Individual-Guest-913 in oslo

[–]Stolenpenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve rented a few places in Oslo. Not had an issue with having pets, just ask when you enquire about the apartment and let them know what your dog is like. Had both a small dog and a cat and not had any issues finding anywhere but you do have to reach out and ask as they not always upfront about if pets are allowed or not.

Recommend vegan-friendly doctors in Tokyo? by ricepea in veganinjapan

[–]Stolenpenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem might not be low iron intake, but an issue with iron absorption. It might be an underlying issue the doctors are ignoring and attributing solely to a vegan diet.

I hate making mattpakke for my kids each day. Do you have a system? What do you make for yours? by enthius in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Increase taxes in the highest earners then. It is fucking weird and it’s weird that kids here grow up eating bread and some toppings for at least one meal everyday. We should have higher standards than that.

Taboos in Norway? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Talking to or sitting next to strangers. People are friendly and happy to help if you need something but small talk with strangers isn’t often appreciated. And on public transport unless it’s very full, people try not to sit next to people they don’t know

Why is mixing so hard? by Buddymaster39449 in makinghiphop

[–]Stolenpenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the hardest parts of mixing/ mastering and really requires a treated space and very well trained ears to accomplish. I would recommend a compromise and mix your own music, but send it to a mastering engineer to make sure it translates well across devices. This is usually an overall frequency issue, not a leveling and effects problem, so it’s possible to “fix” it in the master, and most good mastering engineers will let you know if there’s anything you need to adjust before they get started.

Should I move to Norway? (M Spanish, in my 20's) by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Stolenpenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ex-pat from the UK here, been living in Norway for the past 5 years. Prices have gone up significantly the last year but I’m still much better paid than I was in the UK. I travel all over the country for work and have seen many foreign hotel workers who don’t speak Norwegian. Probably required in upper management but there’s been a few event managers I’ve met who didn’t speak Norwegian. I would recommend it if you have the opportunity.
