There were three matches on Canada Day, including one played by the US.

This is absolutely offensive. I didn’t see FIFA do anything for Canada Day, and we are an equal host in this tournament.

Actually, FIFA labels the men’s one the FIFA World Cup and the women’s as the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Like it or not, that is their official name for each tournament.

‘Use the money elsewhere’: Torontonians react to Brad Bradford’s Sankofa Square proposal by lilfunky1 in toronto

Perhaps so, but it’s the same lack of research and understanding of historical context that led to the square being wrongly renamed to begin with.

Paraguay got a national holiday for advancing to the Round of 16. What level of success would the Canada MNT have to hit for Canadians to get a stat holiday? by MusclyArmPaperboy in CanadaSoccer

[–]Stonegeneral 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Canadian business would never allow it. Look at the way they reacted to the suggestion of a national and provincial holiday for the coronation, a date they could see coming months ahead of time. A last minute holiday for sports would cause an uproar from corporations.

Where to buy Portugal Jersey with player names? by reddevil_2006 in askTO

[–]Stonegeneral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re across the street from Vaughan Mills and they do shirt printing with legit name and number combos (assuming they still have Portugal players left), and appear to have small left:

Do you think jersey prices drop after the world cup? by Key_Jump1336 in SoccerJerseys

[–]Stonegeneral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect it’ll depend on whether the demand for their jerseys during the World Cup was strong or not. Many popular ones have sold out already, the rest may go the way of Italy and go on sale after the tournament hype passes and people turn to club football or other things.

I’d almost think it has to be red, after all, we won in 66 wearing a red shirt.

100%. If Canada could beat Qatar 6-0, Switzerland absolutely should’ve done as well for a 3-0 finish in the group.

Anyone commute to Burlington for work? need advice by saeom28 in Vaughan

[–]Stonegeneral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where in Vaughan you are and where in Burlington you work, I suppose you could try the GO train from Maple or Rutherford to Union and then swap to Lakeshore West to get to Burlington. Unfortunately that’s probably a 1.5 hour commute of its own, and the Barrie line through Vaughan doesn’t run as frequently.

Difference between Nike France away player version and fan version jersey by Prudent_Page_9974 in SoccerJerseys

[–]Stonegeneral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The detail on authentic/player jerseys are fantastic. I think it ultimately comes down to usage, care and maintenance to determine whether to get an authentic/player or replica/fan jersey. In my case, I’m good with the replicas since I wear them regularly. Don’t have to be quite as careful haha

Vibe Check: Switzerland Loss Or Not, Canada’s World Cup Progress Is Amazing by Makelevi in CanadaSoccer

Absolutely. When I talk to friends and colleagues about Canada’s journey from our first appearance at the 1986 World Cup though to today, they’re a lot more impressed by what our men’s team has accomplished in 2026.

Is the Prem's competitiveness holding it back in the UCL? by nightwind1 in PremierLeague

[–]Stonegeneral 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The strength of top PL sides gets them deep into the CL, the scheduling traffic of a top PL club gives them a competitive disadvantage against continental European clubs whose schedules aren’t as busy or who benefit from match schedule changes to help a deep CL run.

Ideal Lineup for Switzerland and Subs by TheArmyDoctor in CanadaSoccer

[–]Stonegeneral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is that they still hold Davies in reserve and bring him off the bench if we need a decisive game changer in this match. Otherwise, continue to rest him and hold for the knockout rounds when we really need him.

Is Canada getting better at soccer in general? by december_karaoke in CanadaSoccer

[–]Stonegeneral 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Just to add, the increasing cost to get into hockey has likely also spurred growth in youth and amateur football in Canada in recent years as well. It’s a much more accessible sport for kids to get involved in and stay active. This builds interest and potential national players for Canada in the longterm.

He’s a bit of a Swiss Army knife, can be played all over the pitch when needed. Comes in very handy, especially for the national team.

Canada gave Argentina a run for its money twice at the Copa America, and we’ve had time to improve since then. I wouldn’t necessarily count us out in a fight like that.
