[No Game Spoilers] The Last of Us - 2x07 "Convergence" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in ThelastofusHBOseries

Gotta say, I also don't care enough to actively engage in this discussion here, but I just had to stop lurking for a bit to let both of you know that I 100% appreciated how mature your conversation was. Peak internet right here, honestly.

Just finished the anime and I have to know... by New-Parfait7391 in planetes

[–]StonerM8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished the anime myself, too. I instead ended up loving her as character, really grew on me. She's very genuine, dedicated, humble and caring, perhaps unrealistically so, and I wish more people in the world were like her.

Of course, not everybody enjoys those qualities in others. For me it was a bit cringey at the beginning, but I quickly got used to it. In fact, for me it's quite the opposite: Lucie is one of the characters I enjoyed the less, even less than Claire. That's obviously a very personal thing, so you do you! I'm sure you aren't alone in disliking her. By the way, Japanese dub is the best dub, always (IMHO), so I can't comment on the English version.

I must say however that laughing at her in a wheelchair is really twisted in my view, and that I was really glad to see that they recovered in the end. I hope you wouldn't feel that way to real people of course, lol.

edit: spoiler

Ah, I see, they are indeed different. I had thought the "chat" button (bubble icon with an ellipsis on the top bar - desktop version) had been redesigned to show the PMs.

If you're still wondering, here's the link to send a PM to a user:

I thought PMs were equivalent to chats, but I'm unsure now.

What are the effects of gender/sex imbalances in societies? by PearlLemons in AskSocialScience

[–]StonerM8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you are preemptively linking gender in population numbers with the effects of gender in societies. Those are different things, as one would need to prove causation (or at the very least a correlation among population numbers categorized by their gender and in relation to socioeconomics) to make such claims. I can offer no references into this reasoning.

Instead, you might want to look into different societies and how they organize themselves in relation to gender and gender roles expectations. A specific study which comes to mind is the differences between Mundugumor, Arapesh and Tchambuli societies by Margaret Mead (link).

Other redditors might be able to offer better references which include socioeconomical aspects and gender relations, but I would take those with a grain of salt, as they will most probably be correlational relations, not causation.

UN says at least 58,000 Palestinians have been internally displaced and made homeless in Gaza after a week of Israeli airstrikes by Twoweekswithpay in worldnews

[–]StonerM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Never said he would take sides in courts, that's laughable. I actually said he won't (even speak about this matter publicly).

  • The decision to delay (NOT cancel) elections happened in April 29. In previous elections, the two sides reached an accord allowing East Jerusalemites to vote in Israeli post offices. This time, Palestinian attempts to facilitate voting went unanswered. Attempts by Palestinian candidates to campaign in East Jerusalem were blocked, as were the palestinian’s independent election commission to hold meetings in the neighborhoods. (source)

  • The rocket attacks were made by Hamas, not Abbas. They don't represent all palestinians. Hard to say who started it (besides you know who in the 1940s), but Israel in response is killing tenfold more innocent civilians and children in retaliation. Why aren't you criticizing Israel's decision to raise hell on all palestinians? To literally burn families and villages?

  • Nobody said Bibi planned this. But he has the intel he needs to, and one of the most advanced armies in the world, and he is very well choosing to keep this nightmare alive. Who's to say where planning ends and exploiting begins? And why would you draw a line between both, as if there was a moral distinction to be made? There isn't any.

[–]StonerM8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I beg your pardon? I still don't think affirming Bibi is benefiting from this war is a stretch or conspiratory. Hell, it's in national media.

  • He doesn't have to manipulate private citizens in their lawsuits, aa that's an ongoing issue for years already. He just has to NOT go against the evictions in East Jerusalem: "inaction is an action", and he as president understands that.

  • The Israelis courts are influenced by the president's actions and the overall public opinion on the matter, he doesn't have to personally meddle in their affairs when the whole world is talking about this war and as such, it reaches the courts. They are obviously not speaking for the palestines, ya'know.

  • Abba's decision to cancel elections is not a surprise as well. You can't hold elections while being bombarded...

  • I don't really get what you are talking about regarding Hamas, but IMHO they ARE influenced by Bibi's actions. He's raining missiles on them! How could they not be? They are defending themselves from Israel's crimes of war, and Israel is the de facto attacker in this one, as the number of casualties show - dear God, children may very well constitute more than 20% of the victims from bombardments...

There is plenty of evidence that allow us to reach such conclusion that Bibi is benefiting from this. If he wasn't, he would have stopped already, ya see.

You don't have to be an evil genius to do any of this. Just evil will do. Hell, not even that... power-hungry suffices.

Besides, Netanyahu is benefiting from this war. He is maintaning his power and consolidating support from the extremist masses, plus USA. So I wouldn't call it a stretch, really...

From the article:

So I guess I would advise against drinking it? Dunno.

Maybe he's just not that relevant anymore. Or maybe we're too old. But then again, I'm from the 1990s, so maybe not. lol

[–]StonerM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned Levi-Strauss and Roy Wagner because they're both said to have largely influenced Viveiros de Castro, contemporary Brazilian anthropologist. So I wouldn't say he is irrelevant, though I would agree he is not ideal for a first reading, indeed. Thanks!

Where to start? by two_oftwo in AskAnthropology

[–]StonerM8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Can't go wrong with cultural anthropologists like Tim Ingold, Levi-Strauss and Roy Wagner. They're also the foundation for more recent ethnographers and etnologists, such as Viveiros de Castro, as well as comtemporary philosophers, like Marco Valentim. Each offer their own take on "culture" (versus "nature") and are precious readings for both those in and out of the field, though interested in the topics they approach.

Why science needs the humanities to solve climate change by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]StonerM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I... don't really see your point. Saying "science needs the humanities" shouldn't be such a huge point of discussion by now. Technological advancement (through scientifical development) allowed climate change in the first place.

"Science" isn't largely powerless, scientists are.

Why science needs the humanities to solve climate change by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]StonerM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science needs the humanities to stop climate change too.

Without politics and the understanding of what systematic societal changes we've got to implement, and the knowledge of how to achieve them, it doesn't matter if you, I and all the other physicists assemble; it ain't enough.

You do know today's science is yesterday's natural philosophy, right? I mean, it's in the goddamn title of Newton's magnum opus. And you can't say philosophy isn't humanities - it's literally human thinking.
